Another journalist sadly confirmed dead at al-Shifa

Israeli forces kill Palestinian journalist in al-Shifa Hospital
Local media is reporting that Israeli forces have shot and killed Palestinian journalist Muhammad Abu Sakhil at al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.

Abu Sakhil, a reporter with Palestinian outlet Sawt al-Quds Radio, joins the almost 100 Palestinian journalists killed by Israeli attacks since October 7.

The IDF will no doubt assert that they are Hamas fighters who were threatening the IDF soldiers in question.

Not a journalist as such, but the global spokesperson for unicef is back in Gaza and is worth a follow if you’re on Instagram - he’s been posting some heartbreaking stuff.

Agreed he is interviewed most days on Irish radio he is so honest about what is happening and a credible passionate eye witness. I heard him today and he got a bit wobbly describing things I hope he gets support when he leaves. He is extremely concerned about the children and their trauma which he thinks is going to be a huge issue for those children that manage to survive

Feel a bit weirdly protective towards him - he often seems quite distressed by what he is seeing - saw him visiting Nasser hospital which was all empty and he was wondering what had happened to the injured children he had met on a previous visit and he looked like he was on the verge of crying - it's so traumatising for the professionals too

This journalist you are concerned about, she seems to have been very supportive of the October 7 terrorist attack.

Sorry if the link below isn't working or isn't taking you to the right article. Not sure what's happened there.

The article I am posting is about Knesset passing law paving the way to ban Al Jazeera in Israel. Netanyahu wants to shut down the television station amidst the war in Gaza.

stomachamelon · 01/04/2024 18:12

I don't know you would be surprised that. Al Jazeera is a state sponsored Qatari propaganda machine which has collaborated with Hamas and other jihadi groups on the strip. . They post falsehoods and then backtrack. They even live-streamed the atrocities on Oct 7.

The right to freedom of speech has to be exercised responsibly. Newspapers that engage wantonly in misinformation, who fail to exercise their freedoms responsibly are not entitled to those freedoms.

Free speech is different in each country and no country is absolute. As with Individuals whose actions affect others. We put them in prison and remove their freedoms. The same applies to this 'paper'.

White House calls Israel’s move to ban Al Jazeera ‘concerning’

White House spokeswoman Karine Jean-Pierre has expressed concern about Netanyahu’s push to stop Al Jazeera’s operations in Israel.

“We believe in the freedom of the press. It is critical. It is critically important, and the United States supports the critically important work journalists around the world, and that includes those who are reporting in in the conflict in Gaza,” Jean-Pierre told reporters.

“So, we believe that work is important. The freedom of the press is important. And if those reports are true, it is concerning to us.”

Wouldn’t it be wonderful if Israel allowed independent international journalists into Gaza as they have repeatedly requested? Perhaps not, given that Israeli war crimes would then be broadcast on all major news channels globally.

As for Al Jazeera, interesting to see Israel is taking the legal route this time to get rid of them. I guess kidnapping and killing off AJ journalists (and their families) one by one got old.

Efacsen · 02/04/2024 10:18

This new legislation affects all overseas/international news agencies in Israel not just Al Jazeera who are in the spotlight atm - down the line it could be applied to other organisations like the BBC, Sky, the Guardian etc if Israeli government so chooses

@Desertrose2023 rather like making up false accusations of rape to hammer a point home. Old eh?

I’m not aware of any false rape allegations.

Unless you mean the ones by the Israeli pseudo journalist in a discredited New York Times article. You know, the story they had to investigate due to a total lack of any journalistic credibility? That along with the fake 40 beheaded babies.

if you’re referring to the claims of rape by Palestinian women against the IDF, then those are not fake. We don’t need much evidence to back them up do we given the IDF’s clear fascination for Palestinian women’s underwear.

Hi everyone, I thought this might be of interest to some of you. I'm a journalist myself and recently found out about and got involved in Media Workers 4 Palestine. They have a new YouTube channel and a website. All professional media workers, a few NUJ reps. They are having a proper launch event soon, but I'm not sure about exact details yet: https://mw4p.org/
Useful updates and news of efforts from fellow UK journalists
