Conflict in the Middle East

The historic role of the UK in the conflict and our responsibility

I have Palestinian and Israeli friends so have always been interested in the issues in the region but was still very ignorant about a lot of the history so have been reading up.

As the previous coloniser if Palestine the UK government seems to have basically signed over land to create a Jewish state without any regard to those already living on the land. I know a lot then happened to get us to where we are today but shouldn't we have some responsibility to at least attempt to sort out the absolute fucking shit show that is now going on?

Most Jewish people are not indigenous to that part of the world!

the Ashkenazi Jews and Arabs are genetically identical but the Jewish diaspora which “returned” to Palestine are genetically different and most certainly not indigenous

thr land where over 90% of people were Muslim has been colonised by a British/Jewish coalition post WW1 (and I’m saying Jewish as Israel did not exist until 1947)

the idea that these colonisers had any right to land that they had not occupied for 2000 years is ridiculous.

but I also strongly believe that Jewish people DO need a state due to the horrific levels of antisemitism they have faced during these 2000 years culminating in the Holocaust. I just wish it had been done with consideration of the Palestinians. Not only have Israel not done it without consideration, they are commiting genocide, ethnic cleansing and demonstrating hugely islamophobic views whilst yelling “you are an anti-Semite!!!” At anyone who dares to criticise the state of Israel.

it is sickening. And I hope the current Israeli government are tried for war crimes at The Hague. They are fucking animals.

I couldn't possibly have put this any better.

Over half the population of Israel are indigenous or of indigenous descent though.

Do you think Israel is 95% American or something?

I agree it could have been handled better though.

Once Israel was a nation, they had the right to set their own immigration policy.

So if they choose to give Jewish people of any ethic background citizenship, that’s entirely up to them.

(I’m talking about in general here, not talking about the settlements or anything else).

I struggle understanding how anyone can not think Jewish people need their own country/safe state, considering the past.

Saying this does not mean I support the current actions of the Jewish government (for the avoidance of doubt).

100% of the Palestinians are indigenous

I’m not sure what argument you want to make, tbh, other than Israel = bad.

The point I was making, as you full well know, was why the country of Israel was created, and why it’s where it is.

The indigenous Jewish population doesn’t have more of a right to be there, but they certainly don’t have less of a right either.

Again, with the caveat, I don’t agree with current actions.

Let us all hope for peace in the region, and hopefully a two state solution, which is the only way imho.

Let’s hope for a change of government in Israel, let’s hope the Palestinian people can rid themselves of the terrorist dictatorship they’re under.

And most importantly, let’s pray for the innocent civilians on both side of the iron fence.

At the time of Jesus, how many of the local population were Muslim?

None. Islam happened 600 years later.

@Fordian
At the time of Moses, how many of the local population were Christians? None, Christianity happened 3000 years later.

So what's your point again ??

Can't wait? Let me put you out of your misery. It's half term, I'm at home.
I'm interested in the history and politics of the whole area.
You can relax, because next week I'll be at work again. I don't seem to understand events leading up to Oct 7th?
Perhaps you can enlighten me.

@Hullobaby "As the previous coloniser of Palestine the U. K. government seems to have basically signed over land to create a Jewish state without any regard to those already living on the land."
Have you researched any more since you wrote this, OP, and have you any more details to add?
A few days ago I googled something like 'The beginning of the modern state of Israel'. Somewhere I found a map of the UN proposed partition of what was then called Palestine, dated 1947 or 1946. It was interesting to see the areas of Arabic and Jewish parts. If I can find it I'll tell you where it was.
Now, anyone out there, on that May morning in 1948, would those lines on that UN map have been the areas of the new Israel and the new Palestine? Am I correct to think that a group of countries called the Arab League declared war on Israel from the start? Was that declaration made on that first day? Did modern Israel start in a fight for its life? Did it gain more land by winning that war? Why was Israel involved in a war in 1967?
I wouldn't refer to Palestine as a colony. The British had the mandate for Palestine from 1922, whatever that means exactly. It wasn't like countries which had been part of the Empire.
I have posted before that it is complicated. And how.

upinaballoon · 29/10/2023 12:16

Another thing which I am going to look up is 'British resistance to an influx of Jewish people to Palestine 1946' and 'Why was Golda Meir on a big boat somewhere in the Mediterranean?' It's all part of the history.

Yes, I think someone on another thread posted the image.

I was replying to the person questioning that you're a teacher, not to you. I know it's half term, that's why I made the comment I did.

Sorry I posted then disappeared as I got Covid and was really ill.

Thank you for the links and reading suggestions. I am going to take a look at them all and educate myself further.

I am shocked at how things have progressed while I was in my COVID slump and am absolutely disgusted at our government not backing the ceasefire.

I understand totally why they abstained. Other countries did too.

However, we are deeply disappointed with the draft’s omission of an unequivocal condemnation of Hamas’ terrorist attacks that killed over 1,400 people and took over 200 hostages last week. This should not be controversial.
That is why we voted in favour of the Canadian amendment which would have corrected this.

Had that been included, UK would have signed.
