Withdrawal method

Just how successful is the withdrawal method of 'contraception'? Has anyone used it successfully?

I recall Billy Connelly's comments on this matter... "at the point of ejaculation there is no f**king way my arse is going in that direction"

plus, of course, sperm will leak out prior to the main ejaculation.

bamboobutton · 30/05/2010 20:44

it can be quite reliable if you use one of those persona machines.

i used one for many years but you need to strictly obey the green light system

PussinJimmyChoos · 30/05/2010 20:45

MN Hubbie - I remember that skit - sooo funny

piratecat · 30/05/2010 20:47

lol @mnhubbie.

this method has always puzzled me, i don't get how it's satisfying for either party?

BabyValentine · 30/05/2010 20:53

I'd thought that too, piratecat!

Read Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler, and you will have no need of the withdrawal method as you will only be having unprotected sex on 'safe' days - that's the theory anyway! Seriously though, it is a very good book.

MNHubbie · 30/05/2010 21:14

Or there is always bumsex (done in a way to be mutually satisfying), oral, digital (not online but using fingers, lol) or toy based options too but unless you are REALLY careful about your days I can't see how it can really be that great plus it kills two parts of it. Spontaneity for starting and mutuality of ending.

HelenRosie · 30/05/2010 21:18

Well it me that is less satisfied by it, my partner is happy with it. We do plenty of bumsex, oral etc too and generally have a great sex life. I suppose secretly I'm hoping it will fail and I'll get pregnant!

You can most definitely still get pregnant. I speak from experience on that one.

MNHubbie · 30/05/2010 21:23

Bizarre partner! I do know what you mean though. DW probably won't thank me for mentioning she loves the feeling inside (I'll leave it at that and you can fill in (oh... unintentional) the rest).

It always seems to be the way. A drunken fling and a split condom leads to pregnancy but years of trying leads to nothing. If you aren't timing things there will always be the chance of pregnancy due to pre-ejaculate leakage.

MollieO · 30/05/2010 21:26

I had unprotected sex on a so-called 'safe' day. The result is asleep in his bed .

heymango · 30/05/2010 21:31

Worked for me for around 2 years - then DD was conceived!

HerHonesty · 30/05/2010 21:31

oh for gods sake, is this a piss take?

HelenRosie · 30/05/2010 21:31

yeah he must be bizarre. However we both hate condoms and I won't use any other methods.

OP posts:
BabyValentine · 30/05/2010 21:34

Which is worse, condoms or an unexpected pregnancy?

Well if we are choosing this method then a pregnancy would hardly be unexpected.

OP posts:
HelenRosie · 30/05/2010 21:38

Rasputin: that's what I thought too, and I'm now starting to worry as I'm still not pregnant.

CrankyTwanky · 30/05/2010 21:39

arf.

no!

OhExpletive · 30/05/2010 21:40

Er, DS is nearly 3 and there's another one due in 4 months. Need I say more?

Two bricks, I tell you, it's the way forward

BabyValentine · 30/05/2010 21:41

So why not just bite the bullet and TTC?

BabyValentine · 30/05/2010 21:44

I don't understand. Not being contrary, just genuinely confused: if you are TTC why are you using the withdrawal method?

febes · 30/05/2010 21:47

We have stupidly been using this method this month as we rebooted the sex life with a vengence a few weeks ago and I have mini pill in the draw waiting for my period so I can start. DD is 2.5 and DS is first birthday was last week . We were going to TTC after christmas so it wouldn't be the end of the world but it won't be ideal as we are immigrating to NZ at the end of the year.

Gahh

We used withdrawal when we first got married too and it worked for months so hopefully....

HelenRosie · 30/05/2010 21:49

He wants to be married before we start officially TTC.

OP posts:
BabyValentine · 30/05/2010 21:52

...but you're worrying that you haven't conceived yet whilst using the withdrawal 'contraception'? Maybe you need to enlighten DF on the success rate

MNHubbie · 30/05/2010 22:09

I get where you are coming from. I do understand. I don't know if I'm being sensitive or not here but I have to ask... are you completely mutual in your decisions as it just seems a little like "HE" is making the decisions for you.

I do, honestly, apologise if I am just being a pratt here.
