we had iui done a few years ago, conceived but sadly ended in a miscarriage,
went for our 2nd go straight away and conceived and now we have a beautiful little boy who is going to be 3 in june.

My periods are very irregular, anything from 35 to 45 days. I have cysts on my ovaries so am not ovulating, i thought after having a baby this would correct itself, but unfortunately it hasnt

I am 31, i am a smoker, non vegetarian, weigh nearly 8stone
dh is 32, non smoker, non vegetarian, his sperms are not extremly high in numbers but sufficient enough

iui explained

right so will post this and begin my diary....

dizzy, im glad my diary has helped a little, and i think sometimes it is the luck of the draw, im a strong believer in fate, and somtimes it doesnt matter what we do to help things along, if its meant to be, then its meant to be, but that dont help us on the quest to getting our much wanted bfp

not long, only another week and a few days before you will know the results..had you and your dh discussed whether you would do more cycles after this one, IF it doesnt work or have you decided enough is enough?

hopefully it wont come to that, and this cycle has worked...are you taking your temperature by the way?

Hello
Just come back from scan. all looking well, and we are due for the insem. fri afternoon. fingers crossed ....

dizzy36 · 15/02/2006 13:53

hi bubbly. I beleive also that if its meant to be then it will happen. We did say this would be last time we'd try it but I think we will give it another go, at least if consultant thinks its worth it. Have to have a follow up after this one if not worked so would have to wait a month. I hope they don't mention ivf because my gut feeling is that its not necessary - my prev 2 pg confirms that I can conceive naturally - took 15 months last time to conceive and expected it to take as long this time. I'm going down the iui route because am not getting any younger so time is not on my side.

I hope that it has worked this month but am prepared for a negative outcome.

bubbly1973 · 15/02/2006 15:28

dizzy36 sometimes the pressure comes off a bit when you know you can have another go if you feel up to it..hopefully this one has worked though, fingers crossed..cos i know what you are going through i feel like im going through it with you, obviously for you its real, another day closer to finding out
madigan,so glad your scan went good, im all excited for you, i imagine for you its a mixture of emotions, excitement, nervous, scared and anxious...the hardest part for me personally was the two week wait..the not knowing stage, so dont forget to vent out on here, it does help

bubbly1973 · 15/02/2006 15:30

ps, madigan, did they give you the injection to trigger off ovulation, or do you do it tonight?

and how many eggs did they say you had that were larger than the others?

OP posts:
Madigan · 16/02/2006 09:41

Bubbly
I injected last night, which was fine (I am getting used to the needles now). They said that there was a large follicle in each ovary - so I think the answer to your question is 2? But not sure - anyway, they said it looked good. So I am quite excited .... but prepared for it not to work as well. Every time I get my hopes up I remember that the statistics for the sucess rate are really really low .....
anyway, at least the odds are higher this month than at any stage in the past 2 years when we have been ttc,
I will definitely be on here during the 2ww (which I know if going to drive me nuts.) Thank you vv much for all your advice and support

ShouldKnowByFriday · 16/02/2006 10:05

Good luck Madigan!!!

dizzy36 · 16/02/2006 12:43

just had my 2000 iu of hcg...never thought to ask hospital but do you know what this is for bubbly?

bubbly1973 · 16/02/2006 15:33

madigan, wow, not long till insemination, good luck and fingers crossed, i will be praying for you

dizzy, same goes for you hun, am keeping my fingers crossed that right now you are pregnant

you had your insemination done last saturday, so not sure why you have been given the hcg drug...if im correct (feel free to correct me ladies if im wrong) the hcg drug is to trigger off ovulation...

i think perhaps you should ring up the clinic to double check why you have been given that drug dizzy, its the only thing i can think of, but if you have already had insemination then you wouldnt need the hcg...the only drug i was given AFTER insemination was the cyclogest pessaries, which is to help thicken the womb ready for implantion to occur...let me know what they say, they could possibly have given it to you by mistake

OP posts:
bubbly1973 · 16/02/2006 15:40

ps dizzy, i dont mean to worry you, the doctors know what they are doing, i am only going by my experience of the drugs i had in my treatment, and all i know is that i wasnt given hcg after insemination only cyclogest.

OP posts:
Madigan · 17/02/2006 09:28

Bubbly
have become paranoid overnight ... how can the clinic tell that they are timing the insem correctly? Does ovulation always occur 36 hours after the trigger injection?

Bella23 · 17/02/2006 09:32

Madigan - just popping in the send positive vibes
Will be keeping a close eye to see how you get on ....all the luck in the world! xx

bubbly1973 · 17/02/2006 09:45

madigan, dont be paranoid, ive double checked on google, and they all say ovulation 36hours after taking the hcg injection.

what time did you take the injection and what time is insemination?

i took mine wednesday midnight, and did the insemination thursday 12noon (36hours later), and dont forget, your clinic are doing inseminations everyday, and they know when the best time is.

its natural to feel anxious, especially as this is your first time, and its hard to believe how clinical it all feels and how timing seems to be controlled like the ovulation and insemination, try to relax and keep thinking and remembering that your chances are higher this month than when you started to ttc.

sending lots of positive vibes xxx

OP posts:
Madigan · 17/02/2006 10:07

I did the injection at 10pm on wed night, and the insem is at 3pm today. So that is 41 hours later .... but they told me that the egg survives for 36 hours (I always thought it was 12 ...)

bubbly1973 · 17/02/2006 11:27

the egg must obviously survive longer than that otherwise clinic wouldnt have any success rates, and dont forget the sperm once injected will go up there straightaway as it dont have a long journey.

oh hun i know what your going through right now, i remember when i had my first treatment, i had to have follicle reduction and they kept me hanging around longer than 36hours, and i was so blinkin paranoid and upset that i missed ovulation, but i didnt, i dont think.

if you feel better, when you go for the insemination, ask the nurse how long the egg will survive and when ovulation takes place, if the answer is the same as they told you already (36hours) then ask them why they have left insemination till 41hours..you will find you are much happier if you know the answers, and the two week wait wont be so daunting,

i never asked all the questions i wanted to, and i was left feeling angry, dissapointed, negative and so wished i asked the questions at the time..

i wish you all the very best this afternoon and good luck.
by the way, expect there to be some wetness after the insemination, but dont worry its not the sperm coming down, its just the cervix getting wet after the insemination.

ive got my fingers crossed for you xxx

Madigan · 17/02/2006 12:31

thank you Bubbly! you're a star X

dizzy36 · 17/02/2006 12:41

hi bubbyly, i've had the 2nd hcg each time I've had iui and never occurred to ask what its for. instructions all 3 times was to have it 5 days after the insem. This time I noticed within an hour that my boobs although still sore were not as bad as the previous days. Also noticed a discharge later on in the day which worried me but nothin today. Think I will ring up the hospital to ask about the 2nd jab and also this discharge.

Madigan, totally know how your feeling and sending you lots of luck for this afternoon.

Its is so hard when everything is controlled by the hospital. My 2nd iui was at 12.30 (just over 36 hours) and was really hard to try and keep calm.

bubbly1973 · 17/02/2006 14:41

sending positive vibes your way madigan, another 20mins to go, your in hospital right now all nervous i bet!!

dizzy, ive never heard of having hcg afterwards, i would be interested to know what the hospital say its for so if you dont mind, when you ring them, let me know, they obviously know what they are doing and do things differently with your clinic....have they given you pessaries to take such as cyclogest?

exactly a week tomorrow and you will find out, got my fingers crossed for you

dizzy36 · 17/02/2006 16:46

hi bubbly. I asked them and apparently the 2nd injection is just to make sure there is enough hcg in there?! To be honest she didn't explain herself very well...just said the 5000iu is to trigger ovulation and 'maintain it' and the 2000iu 5 days later is just to ensure the levels are sufficient because of the hormones our own bodies are producing. wasnt really a sufficient enough explanation really. To be honest the nurses at the hospital I use (manchester fertility services) are generally quite formal in the way they deal with patients and not very sympathetic) When I had sore boobs few days after on 1st cycle the nurse told me probably sign of AF (not what I wanted to hear). Its clear to me know after 3 cycles that what she said wasnt necessarily true. The drugs can affect us differently each month.

I know I'm being negative again, but I've even booked my follow up appointment! didn't want to wait til af comes in case had to wait more than a month for it.

I think different hospitals will have different procedures. I know a lot of hospitals won't do iui if day 2 hormones are a certain level whereas another hospital would. I do ovulate each month anyway and my treatment was based on timing it rather than trying to get me to ovulate. I was on 75iu of fostiman (similar to menopur)for 11 days and then the hcg at midnight. They've never changed my treatment over the 3 cycles.

What is the pessary for that you mentioned?

bubbly1973 · 17/02/2006 17:06

the pessary is to help thicken the womb so that if implantation occurs it will be cushioned nicely. i think it gives us more progesterone which is produced by a normal cycle when you get pregnant (i think!)

maybe the hcg does similiar thing? i tried to google for you to find more info out but didnt find anything

i assumed i would have the same treatment/drugs on all three goes, but on the 3rd go the nurse came in and said that since menopur was making me have more follicles, how about changing over to puregon, which i did, and conceived.

perhaps worth you asking if they would change over on the drugs they give you? might be worth giving it a go if you dont have nothing to lose by it.

OP posts:
bubbly1973 · 17/02/2006 17:11

ps dizzy, its awful what the nurse said about sore boobs and af appearing that certainly isnt the case, and im glad you found out, that each cycle is different!

i know its hard to stay positive on the two week wait, im sure we convince ourselves that it hasnt work so we dont get too upset when af comes, i wish this week to whiz past so that you know one way or another.

just remember there is no way of knowing until af comes or you take pg test, so when you are feeling low and down try to tell yourself that chances are higher this month than a normal cycle.

that could be our mantra on here,

OP posts:
dizzy36 · 17/02/2006 17:28

thanks bubbly, I am quite a postitve person normally but impatient. Think because been trying for 2 whole years without success am thinking why on earth would it happen now.

Can I ask if you felt any different this last cycle...symptoms or even just a feeling.

nurse didn't mention anything about thickening of the womb. Don't they check this at the scans..think mine was 9mm on day of hcg which they said was 'ok'.

Was your insemination straightforward. The last two times my cervix was apparently in a funny position (pointing backwards) which made it a bit awkward. 2nd insemination was very uncomfortable and 3rd insem had to be put in stirrups, and not the ones where you put your feet, the ones where your legs are put in straps and basically hand out each side of the bed (soo not a good look). Asked them if this was normal and said it was...got me thinking if they are having trouble and my cervix has done this twice around ovulation then surely when trying naturally the sperm may have the same trouble getting there. I'm being paranoid aren't I?

Madigan · 17/02/2006 22:13

Hello Bubbly and Dizzy

Dizzy - I know how you are feeling. we have been trying ttc for 2 years too, and I do have that feeling that it will never happen. But we have to stay positive and hope for the best.
Had the insem this afternoon, and it was fine. Was really pleased because DH's sperm count has gone right up over the last 3 months from 14.5 million to 20 million. Nurse said that everything was in our favour, so fingers crossed it will work.
Am hoping the same for you Dizzy.
Got the dreaded 2ww now. what a nightmare. am going to stay busy, but won't be able to stop thinking about it.

bubbly1973 · 18/02/2006 09:14

dizzy, i know what you mean about being impatient, and from your view see why your saying 'why on earth should it happen now'...i felt like that this time around when my first two iui's failed, why should the third work now! before the iui we tried for 4years without success so hard to believe it will ever happen

i only felt different on insemination, this time around i had the insemination done, and literally a minute after i went to turn around and was dizzy for about 10seconds...very strange! i wondered then if this is what women are on about when they come over all funny when conception has taken place...(but that soon? hmm)

anyway, that didnt happen when i conceived my ds, that time i did have really really sore boobs to the point you couldnt touch them on the 2nd 2ww.

soooo when i didnt get sore boobs that bad, (only slightly sore 2nd week) i thought it hadnt worked

i was comparing myself to when i got pg with ds, little did i know my body would be completly different! i soooo didnt feel pg this time around, was convinced it hadnt worked and convinced dh it hadnt.
dont worry about your cervix being in different position, the sperms got there and thats the main thing! (but i do now have a picture of you in stirrips!)

madigan im really pleased that all went well, welcome to the 2ww...i find this is far worse than any injections we have to take, i hope the weeks fly past hun, are you on the cyclogest?..good luck

OP posts:
Madigan · 18/02/2006 09:54

No - what is cyclogest? Have not been told that I need to take anything else
am soooo tired - have slept v badly for past few nights, feeling anxious about it all. Hope that this doesn't continue for 2 weeks .... but bet it will,
