my doc said it can take up to a year for periods to return after coming off it.

jbadgirl · 30/03/2005 15:03

I was on depo and it did take a few months to have a period again but as titania says it can take up to a yr. Hope it wont be too much longer for you tho x

Ebbie - thanks for that, I wasn't absolutely sure and didn't want to expose my ignorance! It is many years since I used it. I came off it in about October 1996 and it caused horrendous problems for me, totally messed up my periods. For 18 months I was bleeding for more days than not. I was told it takes up to 2 years for it to get completely out of your system and I just had to put up with it til it righted itself.

I wasn't trying to conceive at that point so can't help with your question. I think it's right though that even if you're not having periods you are still ovulating.

Does anyone know if depo makes you put on weight?

I seem to be heavier since having it. If anyone came off it, did your weight go down again subsequently (asks hopefully!) I have just come off it after about 2-2.5 yrs.

When I was debating whether to have depo, my doc told me I'd put weight on but as I was quite active and sporty this didn't bother me too much at the time. I do remember saying though that if I was on it for too long I'd get so fat my dh wouldn't fancy me anyway so I wouldn't need to use it anymore!!!

Yes it can take about a year for periods to return to normal. I always advise women that if they were thinking about TTC in the next 6 - 12 months then not to use depo for contraception, or to discontinue with the injections if they are already on it. Saying this though, some women will get pregnant if they are just a few days late for their injection, so it is very random as to when fertility does return!

Its not usual to be ovulating regularly and not seeing periods. A period shows that you have ovulated but the egg hasn't been needed / fertilised that month, so you normally ovulate before you see a period (if everything is working as it should). Thats why some people get pregnant immediately after discontinuing hormonal contraception and never see a period inbetween, just because the egg got used as soon as it was released IYSWIM. I would also tell your friend that she should already be taking folic acid and having lots of sex (sounds obvious but you would be surprised) in order to fertilise that random egg! Good luck!

Neither contraceptive pills nor the depo injection will make you put on weight. What they do in some women is to increase their appetite (the progestogen hormone can act like an appeitie stimulant). Thus, if you feel hungrier, and start eating more (usually snack foods) then you will put on weight. If you are aware that hunger could be a side-effect, and continue eating as you always did (or eat healthy snacks like fruit) then you won't put on the weight. But this doesn't happen to every woman anyway. Some women actually lose weight! HTH
