Having a Hysteroscopy under GA on tuesday, what can I expect?

had a HSG but they want to take yet another look. at this rate every doc in the UK will be able to draw a map of my fecking reproductive organs from memory!

I had two hysteroscopies under GA in the latter part of last year. I also had removal of uterine adhesions at the same time.

You will have a period like bleed afterwards and some shoulder tip pain because they blow you up. Very much like the previous op I'm afraid. Normally you check in in the morning and are ignored till the hour before and then drugged, and poked when asleep then you spend an hour in recovery and then once you've had a cuppa and spoken to the docs you can go home.

what was it like afterward? did you have to stay in? everything really, im a bit worried aout it.

I stayed three hours afterwards but that was only cos I had a bad reaction to the GA.

will i be in pain afterward?

my mum has had two, hasn't had to stay in afterwards, just hang around for an hour or two after to recover from the general. the first one she recovered from v. quickly able to go shopping a few days later, the second one was worse, took her over a week to feel comfortable walking (she let a student take an extra look so puts the longer recovery down to that).

not checking in til 12.30, im really worried i'll have to stay in.

will they give me the result straight away?

Mine were done as a day cae. I had t go in at 7:30am for morning surgery and was allowed to go home round 6pm. I did have some cramping pains and bleeding for a few days after (not sure if the hysteroscopy of removal treatment). The GA knocked me out of things for qute a few days too, esp the second time (3 months after first).

Expect a very dry and sore mouth/throat following the GA - I didn't know this and it suprised me. Second time round my throat was very sore indeed.

If I had been in for an afternoon op I would have had to stay the night apparently.

It's better to be the afternoon shift actually - you will see the anaesthesiologist almost immediately, be knocked out by 2pm at the latest, in recovery by 3 and the consultant will be off shift at 4 so you'll deffo get sent home by then.

The pain factor, well if you get period pains that's about the size of it - and they give you a voltral up yer bum as part of the surgery so you don't really notice the pain.

hula, was that because they removed the adhesions? when i had my laproscopy and laparotomy they found LOTS of adhesions, so should i plan for an over-night stay?

I don't know TBH. I knew that I had Asherman's Syndrome before I went in for th hysteroscopy and I was aware I woul be having some of them removed at the same time (too many to have done in one go, hence two ops).

Never had hysteroscopy before so not sure how much of it all was due to the removal nd ho much from the hysteroscopy.

im fine, its to see why im spotting mid-late cycle and my periods have been vvv painful since 6th mc. bit nervous about it though. next week is last one at college too, so im cramming at the mo

Lissielou - a biopsy is standard practice a 'while we're in here' thing they do. They also remove any adhesions and sample any polyps - completely normal.

i, I work in theatres and a hysteroscopy is a minor procedure. You should be under the anaesthetic for approx 20 mins and home the same day.
The camera is inserted though the cervix to view the lining of the uterus and perhaps remove polyps or take biopsies. There is far less to it than having a laparoscopy

Oh and they take photos too - and then insist on showing you them afterwards. Now personally I can live without seeing 'the gories glories of my inner womanhood'
