I am going to have to talk to my MW about my labour with DS. I was told that I had a fast labour with DS and should have a home birth.

My first contraction was at 4pm on the monday and he was born at 12:15pm so about 20 hours. I'm really confused.

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 10/06/2008 08:02

I think they normally follow a crap rule about it taking half as long each time, it is crap because DS1 was 12 hours, DS2 was 2 hours!

But even by that 'rule' 10 hours is plenty long enough to get to a hospital, if that's what you want.

BTW, one of my concerns last time about a HB was the noise my poor neighbours would have to put up with, but then I thought sod it, at the time, I had no choice but to go for a HB, (or an elec cs which I would rather cut my own arms off than go through!) we already had enough problems on the books without worrying what the neighbours thought!

In one way, there is no point worrying about it, what will happen will happen, we can't do anything about it. But actually that doesn't stop the worrying, just makes it worse! LOL

largeginandtonic · 10/06/2008 08:13

Do it at home, do it at home, do it at home...

It is so much nicer (if you ignore the pain) Stick to your guns and be calm. My BP shot up with ds#3 at home. The midwife knew me though and said dont worry, keep calm. We waited for an hour or so and it settled again.

Kay my neighbours never heard a thing and i am not quiet Stuff them anyway! It usually happens in the night, they wont notice!

kayzisexpecting · 10/06/2008 08:18

But our walls are paper thin. We can hear the bloke next door snoring!!!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 10/06/2008 08:30

LOL Kay, I still wouldn't worry, when I was having DS2, I was 10 minutes, if that, from DS2 being born, DH was walking just into the delivery suite (which is fhuge) as he was walking towards the nurses station thing to ask where I was, he said he could hear what sounded like me screaming all the way from I was, but thought it couldn't be me, it was far too soon for all of that noise, he said as he was getting closer and closer to my room, the shouting was getting louder and louder, and he was still trying to convince himself it couldn't be me! LOL Those poor women around me trying to have peaceful lovely labours, then I shot through the door! At least I was only up there for a few minutes!

I do make a lot of noise, nothing like anything I have seen on the telly! LOL

LG&T of your all knowingness! Do you remember how shit scared I was last time? I can't go through that again!

kayzisexpecting · 10/06/2008 08:36

I don't think DH would let me have a home birth!

Cosmogirl · 10/06/2008 08:40

Morning all, god I am tired this week - have really bad hayfever - could be why. Or could just be that I am a lazy arse....

GJ - I'm not jumping off the wagon just yet. We are just toying with the idea, but no decisions as yet, so I'm leaving myself on the list as Oct/Nov for now.... It is odd because through the day and in the evening I feel happy and cool with the idea of pregnancy, trying etc. In the morning I feel slightly scared by it. It might be that I'm not a morning person and usually feel a bit queasy [it's the thought of work that does it probably [smile ]. Maybe when I feel comfortable with the idea in the morning, it will be time to throw in those icky, passion-killing condoms....

Rachrox · 10/06/2008 08:53

Morning all,
Thank you for all your welcomes.

Some of you get up way to early!! ..lol..
It took me a while to catch up with you all as don't really go on here in eves as dh thinks we should spend time 'together', instead of me ignoring him, whilst i surf!!

About home births, i think they're a good idea although i've never had one. (1st dd arrived 12 wks prem, 2nd dd was 6 wks early too!) A relative had one tho and said it was the best experience ever . So if it's medically ok, go for it.

kayzisexpecting · 10/06/2008 08:55

Morning Cosmo, sorry you aren't feeling too good.

DS is driving me nuts this morning. He is in a right strop mainly because I won't let him eat the Sudocrem. I thought strops and screaming tantrems start at 2 not 14 months.

EsmeWeatherwax · 10/06/2008 09:07

Morning all,

Kays, know how how you feel, dd is a right wee stroppy madam, lol, also with a liking for sudocrem. Although she dabs it all over her face...very fetching!

Home births scare me, but then, I am the biggest wuss ever. But if you are brave enough, its probably a great idea. I was in hospital for 4 days with dd, after em cs, and found it incredibly not restful, noisy, and I had a really weird lady beside me, who kept either calling her new ds either a sexy wee monkey, or alternately, an evil looking wee f*cker

Ses, I was very tempted to test this morning...v.v.stupid, as only 7dpo...lol, I know what you mean about the anticipation thing.

This cycle just seems to be so looonnnggg...

kayzisexpecting · 10/06/2008 09:11

He is now looking like he is going to sleep on the floor.

The best thing I think about a home birth is I know I can go in a birth pool where as the hospital only has one so I never got to use it.

sorkycake · 10/06/2008 09:12

I've caught up...... I think.

Birth pool in a box is carp! I hired a thermostatically-controlled one that keeps the pool at a consistent 37C so it doesn't need to be re-filled throughout the labour.

I'll hunt out the link for the woman I hired it from, she was down South somewhere. It cost £300 for 5 weeks. Best money spent.

Though come to think of it with hindsight I should've just bought the thing outright as I'll have spent £900 by the time this one comes

LL your story is what scares me about hospitals. My neighbours have only known I was in, labour because the m/w turned up. They never heard a thing!

There's a good pregnancy book I bought with Dh in mind for ds1's birth by Sheila Kitzinger.
She's an advocate of natural home births and this laid his mind to rest somewhat. He was a bit frightened of 'something going wrong', but tbh he soon realised that there was no way things could've gone much more wrong than with Dd's hospital birth and came round sharpish.

Active birth by Janet Balaskas (?sp) is also brilliant.

Welcome to all newbie's!

Cosmo? are you needing a little push?

So where's the list of testers then? You can test from 11dpo with a first response test and get a pretty accurate result.

calsworld · 10/06/2008 09:23

Morning all. Tonsillitis lady back again it hurts. Doc has said no more antibiotics as what I've got is viral, hence not getting better, so he's finally referred me to ENT with a view to having them taking out! YAY!

Anyone had a tonsillectomy? Day? Overnight?

Today is CD28! Time is ticking by sooooo slowly!

Will try and catch up, bear with me, I've been gone at least half a day ...

Welcome Rach, sorry for AF Moosma and LBOT (did I say that already?),

LL and Moosma, your poor little DD's and you, hope next time round is better.

I was like NJ - had a home birth planned, complete with birth pool, home all set up, lots of blankets on floor, old duvet etc, waters broke at 1.30am on his due date then contractions steady till 5.30 but getting very painful and within 1 minute so called MW, she arrived and examined me only to find his head hadn't engaged and we were at risk of a cord prolapse. She made us transfer to hospital and we failed to progress, mainly because being strapped to a bed on your back isn't particularly conducive to helping a head engage - we ended up as an emergency cs as DS started getting distressed .

Not sure what to do next time around, I'm thinking VBAC but am thinking maybe pool birth at hospital / then again, if they'll let me, why not try it at home?? At least I know what I'm in for....although to be fair, I wasn't really coping with the pain but then again, I was very distressed at being in hospital when I wanted to be at home and very distressed at being confined to the bed! GRRRRR

Anyhooo, rant over! what's everyone doing today? I'm once again supposed to be working from home, but haven't done anything yet . Doctor has signed me off for the week, think I'll ring them tomorrow and try to get on with my report writing today. I need to get it done desperately!

EsmeWeatherwax · 10/06/2008 09:32

Cals, I've had a tonsillectomy, when I was about 20. Its ok, but I was in hospital for a couple of days I think, and they absolutely didn't give me ice cream! Lol, it was opal fruits and cornflakes. Ow!

I'm supposed to be working from work, but not really getting into it much.

Diege · 10/06/2008 09:38

Just saying hello and to let you know I'm still here!! Anyway, booking my away pass from the wagon for a few days, as working in London till Thursday eve.
Hope to catch up asap on my return!
Diege xxx

Moosma · 10/06/2008 09:38

I had a birth pool in a box too but it never got as far as coming out of the box! DD2 came so quickly I didn't need it, I just paced around the house then knelt on the floor biting the sofa cushions! Kayz don't worry about the noise, it's only for a few hours and is your naighbour really going to come knocking on your door to confront a woman in labour??

largeginandtonic · 10/06/2008 09:38

They wont let you Cal you have to say i am having a home birth, support me.

NJ it will not be the same my lovely, if i am basing this birth on the last one i will be induced, have my waters broken, scream like a banshee and oush for 3 hours before transfering to theatre foran epidural and possible c-section. Luckily a lovely Reg turned him and hauled him out with the ventouse.

They are all different, they do get quicker if you let your body do what it needs to do. The midwife (i see her tom) is going to roll her eyes to heaven when she hears i want a home birth. Hey ho...

Sorky

calsworld · 10/06/2008 09:40

Hey Diege! Long time no speaky! Hope you're well and you're trip goes OK.

On the subject of absentees - where is Teuch? Has she got a pass? Is everything OK?

OP posts:
sorkycake · 10/06/2008 09:51

LG&T

How bizarre...I've just rang the GP's surgery to ask if I'll have to hand a sample in for testing as I've done a hpt and tested +ve. The receptionist asked me if I was more than 10 days late, so I said yes and she said ok then bring a sample in and we'll test it for you.

I asked why 10 days, just out of curiosity and she said they don't test unless you're at least 10 days late as most people aren't pregnant!

Does anyone else's surgery do this? Mine didn't used to.

Makes no odds to me, I just thought it was a bit weird.

kookykid · 10/06/2008 09:56

Morning everyone!

I used birth pool in a box and found it brilliant! I actually bought mine as thought it'd be cheaper in the long run, especially if having more than one DC. I made DH blow it up about 2 weeks before I was due as a practice run - he found it such hard work he refused to do it again so it sat in our living room for the next 5 weeks until DD made her appearance!

We'll be testing together then tomorrow, ses, am not v hopeful!

Cal, hope you feel better soon. my mum had her tonsils out at quite a young age and swears blind she's never had a day's illness since!

Kayz, was it you asking about bio-oil?? I slather DD in olive oil every night and it's fab for everything! V cheap and v natural!

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 10/06/2008 09:59

Oh no Cal, not again? You must be feeling so fed up of it now. On a brighter note, how are the pregnancy symptoms going?! [wunk]

And ooops and sorry to Rach, a big hello and welcome to the thread As long as you're not queasy, you'll fit right in

Diege, where have you been? Tut tut tut, fancy having to go and shop work in London...

LG&T, I'm not so bothered about actually giving birth, I know I can do that bit, it is the question marks hanging over the what if's? What if DH doesn't get here in time? What if I am alone with the boys? What if something goes more wrong than just labouring alone with the boys? What if, what if, what if. Answer is obviously get an ambulance, but what if I am in no fit state to ring? Last time my waters went with a bang, and that was it, full steam ahead.

Still, plenty of time to work it all out, and it all worked itself out last time!

Yes, where is Teuch?

glaskham · 10/06/2008 10:03

I think i've worked out my cycle wrong.... i expect i OV'd on the 1st/2nd.... that makes me due to test either the 14th or 15th right?.... i have some cheapie 10miu tests.... will these work early?

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 10/06/2008 10:03

Squack with DS2 they did a pregnancy test at the surgery before I even got a whiff of a midwife, this time nothing! I think it depends on who see's you that day, last time I went to the GP first, this time I went straight to the MW.

I bought my birth pool in a box as well Kooky, sold it on eBay after, and got more for it than what I paid from their website! I remember the MW having to come out and check it was suitable for birthing in, she said she'd had one HB with a woman sat in one of those cheap paddling pools from Woolies, she said not only was it no where near deep enough to be of effective relief for the woman, but she (the MW) leant on the side of it to monitor the heart beat, and the side collasped, water everywhere!

glaskham · 10/06/2008 10:04

oh sorry.... forgot to say good morning to you all....

NatalieJaneIsPregnantAgain · 10/06/2008 10:04

Glaskham, do you know how long your LP was last month?
