bizarre pregnancy test result

Hi everyone i'm new to this site. I have a 2 and a half year old boy and I thought it was about time he had a brother or sister so weve started trying for a baby. I took a test 2 days before my period was due (a bit too impatient)and no result appeared in the window at all but the second window showed a completed sign. I took another test 5 days later and it showed a faded horizontal line and an extremely (I stress the word extremely, my partner couldn't see it) light vertical line. Two tests later with the same clear blue sticks and its the same result each time, this isn't described on the instructions. Anyone got a clue?

Never used clearblue, so can't really comment, but why don't you go to your gp and ask for a test? It's horrible the waiting and not knowing bit isn't it?

I think I will have to because I'm wasting alot of money on these defective tests. Its just that it takes a week for the results to come back from my gp and I'm incredibly impatient. I suppose I'm waiting for a clear sign of pregnancy to occur like with my first pregnancy, I just knew even though it was an accident I just felt different and realised straight away, but I suppose every pregnancy is different.

I used Clearblue and got easily readable results both times. Well, every time since I never believed the first one, or the second. The faded horizontal line does mean a positive result but I got a faint one of those and then had my period about 5 days later which I assume was an early v miscarriage.

Well actually they've changed the tests. With my first pregnancy a blue horizontal line denotes a positive result and nothing appeared if it was negative, simple. Now its a light blue horizontal line and a dark blue vertical line for pregnant and a dark blue horizontal line for not pregnant. Now this still seems fool proof but unless its gone through my scrutiny nothing can be called fool proof. But my period is still late so it looks like I'm heading to my GP! Fingers crossed!

Fingers crossed, Bekki, but I have to say that as a seasoned mass consumer of pregnancy tests on the UK market I have always found Boots own brand the most reliable...never got on with Predictor or Clearblue. Good luck!

Well, two weeks on and still no period so still without seeing my doctor I decide to take another pregnancy test, I bought the cheapest one I could find in the chemist and what do you know a clear result! I'm pregnant! I'm so excited. My husbands reaction was 'what did you buy another test for your period is two weeks overdue I could of told you that for free'. I've just got to tell my mother now, she will no doubt be disappointed in me having a second child she thinks one is enough for anyone. So before my happiness is squashed by my mother I thought I'd just congratulate myself on here. Yaee!

Hopefully reading all this good news will send abit of good luck my way as I'm presently trying the convince my dh what a good idea having another one would be. There are so many people I know who are expecting or have just had a baby that I'm so cluckie I'm almost growing feathers!! Okay his argument that we'll have 3 under 5 is a fair point but I'm the one who has to do the really hard work. aren't I?!?

Congratulations Bekki. My mother said exactly the same to me second time round and it did upset me a lot, so choose a moment when you are feeling resilient to tell her!

Thanks everyone. I'm not sure how on earth I'm going to tell my mother, I spent all day with her at work today trying to find a moment, but I was too scared that she would react horribly and ruin it for me. She thinks shes too young to be a grandmother and at 39 I agree, but she had me young and I'm having my children young. I'm really looking forward to this second baby and if I show how happy I am then I'm sure my mother will eventually come round to the idea. I still don't quite understand her point of view though, its not as if shes ever babysat my son, she rarely sees him, I don't see how my children can take away her freedom. Nevermind maybe I'll be in her shoes one day. Thanks for the support.

Congratulations Bekki, I'm really pleased for you. You seem to have a very good attitude towards your mother's doubts. I have certain issues with my mother, and I know it's difficult to be objective about it. As someone else said, don't tell your mum for now if you think she'll disapprove.

My period was due to start yesterday and I did a Clearblue test. The result was negative but still no signs of my period starting today. Did I do the test too early do you think? How long should I wait before doing another? Have two boots tests ready and waiting!!!!

Speaking personally I have twice over the years got a negative from a Clearblue and a positive from a Boots test, done on the same day on each occasion (obsessed, moi?). Boots' tests clearly suit my hormones better than other brands...but numerous posts on Mumsnet show that everyone has their favourite brand...usually the one that shows that precious positive first. Good luck!

I always get a negative until around a week after my due date (still doesn't stop me spending a fortune on tests in the interim).

I had a negative result with a predictor test yet a positive result with a superdrug one. I'm expecting again now and chose the cheapest one I could find.....which was a Boots one and I got a positive result on the day my period was due.....maybe I'm just cheap!!

Thanks - will wait a few days and try the Boots one. Am really hoping for a positive although have no real classic symptoms. Have a stuffy nose and had period like cramps but thats about it - oh and a fair few headaches. My first was unplanned and only found out at 7 weeks so am pretty ignorant when it comes to detecting early signs etc....My first is now 5 months and would like to have 2 close together - fingers crossed. Will be on the edge of my seat over the next few days waiting for my period - agony!

Tessie - I recommend the First Response tests (they're in pink and white packaging). The packet says that they can be used 3 days before your period is due. I had a negative superdrug test yesterday, but a very positive first reponse test today.
Am now off to be sick - oh joy!
