I had DS when I was 39 (no problems conceiving--got pregnant second month we tried). Until recently, I've felt ambivalent about a second child. But right now am feeling mega-broody!

Hiya, Marinda, to answer your question, DH and I had discussed having a second baby in a kind of hypothetical way, but it was only after the event, that we realised I could be pregnant. At first he was hoping I wasn't because of his very busy college course and of course our lack of cash and space in our little flat, but he's really excited now. I didn't have time to do anything to help conceive--I was still on my regular 4 or 5 mugs full-strength coffee, had had 3 boozy nights out (am not a heavy drinker normally) and, er, was smoking 5 ciggies a day (I threw them away after having done my test).

DecafArabica · 06/01/2005 11:14

Yes Hoxtonchic, I expect I will be hanging out at the Homerton! Last time I think my area had their appointments on Friday mornings. But this time I am going to get most of my check-ups at the GP surgery as it's nearer.
Good luck with your test madness.

Noreena · 06/01/2005 16:23

wow! this thread is like a book you can't put down, I just read it from start to finish, very exciting! Congrats DecafArabica what wonderful news! And all the best to all other slightly older ones like us! Re TTC first time it took forever, maybe 2 years at least to conceive my ds (nearly 4) when I was 36. And I've just found out I am pregnant with number 2 when we had barely tried. It seems crazy doesn't it? My masseur was convinced that we were totally stressed out by trying too hard the first time and I only conceived when we did what she said i.e. went on holiday, got drunk, got interested in sex for its own sake again and really stopped trying. Not at all easy to do psychologically but at least I think I was much more relaxed (smashed) that week-end than usual. I don't know why we conceived just now except we weren't officially trying. My sister is a midwife and she says fertility is the strangest thing in the world and that people are often getting pregnant when they've been told it's very unlikely, it is so mysterious isn't it? I wish everyone trying to conceive could have 3 to 6 months massage therapy from a really experienced masseur like I did. I always tell her she got us pregnant first time round!

beansprout · 06/01/2005 16:28

Fantastic!!! Congratulations!!!!!

hoxtonchick · 06/01/2005 16:35

you'll find me there most wednesday afternooons, arabica, at the charmingly named high risk clinic. damn diabetes. do you want to meet up sometime?

Marina · 06/01/2005 17:08

You WHAT? How did I miss this? Congratulations Arabica, fabulous news!

Marina · 06/01/2005 17:09

Who says she was in bed at the time Hester

DecafArabica · 06/01/2005 18:08

Er, I just went to the GP and did a test there...which was negative...that's 24 hours after doing a Boots test at home that was definitely positive! Nurse said (a) it would have been better to have had an early morning wee sample; and (b) could simply be that it's too early for her test to tell. Perhaps I am just menopausal and deluded!! Luckily I showed DH the stick I'd used with the cross in the test window...so I was definitely pregnant according to THAT test. Gonna do another test tomorrow morning at home.

Canadianmom · 06/01/2005 18:13

Oh Decaf, What a nightmare! The GPs tests are often less sensitive (bought in bulk etc..) so your original result ought to be more accurate. There is no such thing as a false positive only a false negative. How are you feeling?

hester · 06/01/2005 18:15

Oh Arabica, that's a bit disturbing, isn't it? I'm sure the nurse was right and it was just the time of day. And the urine tests they do at the GPs are no more accurate than shop-bought ones (only the blood tests are more sensitive) so there's no reason not to have faith in your own test. Still, it must be playing on your mind. I look forward to your next test confirming your happy news.

DecafArabica · 06/01/2005 18:16

A bit shell-shocked and a bit silly/embarrassed, I should have waited longer before making the nurse appt/telling RL people. Part of me is quite sure I am pregnant but the other part isn't sure now.

Canadianmom · 06/01/2005 18:22

Another test in the morning should put your mind at ease. Have you spoken to your DH yet? You may be menopausal or delusional (I can't judge either) but neither of those conditions would cause the + to show on the test. I would run with the 'too early' theory. I look forward to seeing your positive result tomorrow morning. Will be thinking of you.

hester · 06/01/2005 18:24

You poor love. FWIW, my opinion is that you should have faith in your test: home tests are very good and false positives are disappearingly rare. Try to keep positive tonight. We'll deal with tomorrow tomorrow. So sorry that you are having this blight on your happy news.

posyhairdresser · 06/01/2005 18:43

Don't worry, the Gp's test just isn't sensitive enough for an early pregnancy without early morning urine to test on. A false positive from your test is REALLY unlikely.

Hope you have a lovely pregnancy!

DecafArabica · 06/01/2005 18:50

Thanks everyone, I will be back some time in the morning with news of my home test...meantime, I'm going to try not to worry about anything more pressing than Celebrity Big Brother.

jeddah · 06/01/2005 22:29

ARABICA!
from an old doll......congrats on your pregnany! false positives in my book are very very rare!

DecafArabica · 07/01/2005 12:28

Boots test was a lovely big blue cross in the window. So either Boots tests are wrong (cos that's what I used before), or, I am still up the duff!

hester · 07/01/2005 12:54

Oh, thank goodness! On the ttc thread we reckon that Boots tests are brilliant, so I'd definitely have faith in it. How wonderful to have your mind at ease. Now enjoy your pregnancy - for us broody over-40s you are a role model!

aloha · 07/01/2005 13:14

Yippee! Sorry you had a bit of a blah day yesterday after your appt. Put your feet up and have some chocolate.

Marina · 07/01/2005 13:17

Always got a +ve result with Boots way before any other make, good news today then Arabica.

Sallie · 07/01/2005 13:18

Decaf - you and I have both had the same experience over this. Great news about the BFP today. Take care
