Home insemination

Wondering if anyone has experience with this?
DH and I are TTC our second but he has been struggling with work and family stress - high pressure role and family illness. We both want this badly but DH is feeling some performance pressure and not ejaculating / losing erection during sex. It’s frustrating for us both when I’m ovulating and really get us both down.
I just wondered if anyone had successfully tried home insemination? I think it’s a good idea so we can be a bit more spontaneous with sex and take any pressure off but reassured that we have more chance of conceiving by adding this into the routine.
I have bought some bits off amazon (flat head syringes, “specimen” cups 😂and a cheapy conception cup type thing)
any hand holding / reassurance / experiences greatly appreciated.
It feels strange and clinical to be considering it but I am a bit hormone baby crazy and willing to give anything a go, but feel a bit embarrassed talking to anyone IRL about it because of taboo around ED.

Hi any one got pregnant with first round of home insemination.

JS5 · 20/01/2024 09:19

Hope you dont mind me jumping on. We've been ttc 3 cycles now via home insemination (cheap lubricant syringes from Amazon and specimen pot) due to pressure. We both 35

Things we've done so far: inseminated everyday during fertile window and Ov day and the day after; lied down for atleast 1hr with pillows under; washed equipment with luke warm water thoroughly and leave to try for next use; used pressed as dont get much EWCM and struggle to orgasm. Having said that managed to orgasm on some days this cycle but the excessive movement caused most of the semen to come out

Just looking for tips please, other things that worked for you?

Thanks in advance.

Sunshineclouds11 · 20/01/2024 10:20

@JS5 I wouldn't worry about having an orgasm. I never had one and it worked for me.
We also done every other day to allow sperm to 'add back up' can't think of the proper terminology for it!
You will always get some fall out so don't think that none has went inside, it would have!

Took us 4 cycles

JS5 · 20/01/2024 15:15

Thanks @Sunshineclouds11. Funny you mention doing it every other day, as I was reading this earlier online about sperm count increasing every other day. We've been doing it 4days straight (2days before O, on the day O and then the day after).

Did you do anything different in your 4th cycle, compared to previous 3?

narwhalsarereal · 20/01/2024 17:38

I'm going to jump on this with DP & try AI this cycle.
The stress of TTC is getting too much for us both, he has problems finishing inside me anyway so this might be the way

Sunny1706 · 20/01/2024 19:28

Hi all

Sunny1706 · 20/01/2024 19:28

Keep going it does work!

LilPearl · 22/01/2024 11:11

Hey ladies,
Just about to move into cycle number 4. We've got a Tilly blooms old style syringe and I've seen they've changed them to be more like the mosie baby one now. I'd like to buy one but seems they've all disappeared from Amazon! Any tips on what you successful ladies used and where to buy? Thank you x

Sunshineclouds11 · 22/01/2024 11:55

@LilPearl A Calpol syringe for us 😅

CurlyWurly1991 · 25/01/2024 17:45

@LilPearl i searched for something on Amazon that has a gross name, basically it’s a rounded head syringe though. I bought like 100 for £5. It’s been fairly good. Calpol syringe would work but these are much bigger so you can direct it more easily.
The successful cycle for us (that sadly ended in a MMC recently) was one where I made sure I directed it properly, as the cervix isn’t usually straight upwards, if you use your hand to find where it is and direct the syringe you might help things along iyswim.

CurlyWurly1991 · 25/01/2024 17:54

@FSGirl how are you getting on?

FSGirl · 25/01/2024 18:09

So glad so many have found this thread; I wish everyone best of luck 🤞🏻
@CurlyWurly1991 no joy as of yet, but the last two months we did things the “traditional way” - I honestly thing just because we had another option it took the pressure off around ovulation.
I have some clear blue ovulation tests literally arriving tonight as I think I’m in my fertile period, so might be time to get the cup & syringe out this evening!
How about you?

I'm not sure the equipment has that much effect... as long as the sperm goes in the right direction! I used a combination of Calpol syringes and colostrum collection syringes (left over from previous baby). I had a feel to make sure I was aiming in the right direction/as close to the cervix as possible, inserted the syringe as deep as possible, then withdrew the syringe slowly after pressing the plunger. I lay down with hips raised for a minimum of 20 minutes (often ended up going to bed straight afterwards, although not with a pillow under my hips 🤣).

Sunny1706 · 26/01/2024 16:38

I used calpol syringe and got pregnant with first month of try .I'm sure you don't need to buy expensive equipment.

CurlyWurly1991 · 26/01/2024 18:00

I agree that no pricey equipment needed. My only worry was getting a reuseable syringe clean enough in between uses. So ended up doing single use ones which is actually terrible for the environment tbh.

narwhalsarereal · 27/01/2024 22:58

Well, we've given it a go for the first time so fingers crossed, although I'm not getting my hopes up

Interesting.. I can never find my cervix. Did you direct the tip of syringe more towards the spine or forward towards the bladder?

JS5 · 29/01/2024 14:51

Does the size (width) of the syringe matter, I'm finding alot of the semen starts to come out as I press the syringe, I wonder if a thinner syringe would work better for keeping the semen inside for longer?

CurlyWurly1991 · 29/01/2024 17:09

@JS5 i think it varies a lot between women. Mine tilts to the right.

Gkb90 · 29/01/2024 18:10

Hi ladies, could you please share the Amazon links to the syringes etc you used please? I’m seeing so many options/mixed reviews on Amazon so not sure what to go for!

thank you xxx

stripeymonster · 29/01/2024 18:33

I just used the standard plastic syringes for dispensing kids medicine. They came wrapped in plastic. They don't need to be anything special or very big.

I had the same problem. And then if I depress the syringe slowly to stop leakage, I worry the "shot" isn't enough.
Plus I can't feel my cervix, so no clue if I have the syringe in the right place.

Any tips?
