40+ TTC this year

👋
I'm just trying to get an idea and a bit of hope in TTC over 40, and for me...mid 40's!
I'm 44 and will soon be 45 🙃
TTC number 2.
Have been trying for over a year.
IVF not an option.
Delayed our TTC number 2 because of Covid.
Anyone in the same boat?

@Isitthathardtobekind welcome 😊
My cycles are also 24 days. TTC number 2 , but unsuccessful.
To be honest im not quite sure when I ovulate - could be as early as day 9 or later day 14...
At 45 though I think my chances are over 😊

Aria999 · 10/02/2024 04:05

Just popped on to say if you are not using ovulation kits, use them! Took a year to conceive DS1 at 38 because nhs said day 14 was the day, I actually ovulate around day 7.... took 6 months to conceive DD2 at 41 using ovulation kits.

theleavesfall24 · 10/02/2024 10:50

@Aria999 which ovulation kits were you using? And how long were your cycles?
Thanks for your post 😊

Morning ladies, hope you don’t mind me joining you. I need a bit of support I guess. Just turned 43, had a mmc at 11 weeks in August, was very shocking didn’t expect it. Have been trying ever since. Think I had a chemical start of Jan, was 3 days late and vvfl on a pt. I had I thought quite a few symptoms, but even the months I didn’t have a sniff of a line I magiced some up. However, I loved my wine, drank several bottles a week while ttc after the mc. 1st Jan I decided enough was enough so stopped drinking all together. Been taking coq10 supplements and folic acid. My period was due Thursday, and not even a hint of it appearing . But I have no symptoms at all. Sometimes I think I’m peeing more then I don’t, then I’m tired early at night like 8/9 pm but I’m up early at 6 so this isn’t unnormal. I think maybe the over consumption of wine I blamed for a lot of things like tiredness / sluggishness feeling a bit sick/possible pregnancy but now I have no symptoms and no symptoms excuses. With my miscarriage it was 6 weeks before I found out I was pregnant and it was a real shock as we weren’t trying, so I think if I had known I could probably have avoided the mc by not drinking maybe this is my karma . 😬😬😬I don’t know what to do. I’m tempted to test but if it’s negative it’s worse than a period coming so I’ll hang off till Monday maybe , but is it normal to have conceived and feel nothing? I have had 2 bouts of feeling a tiny bit sickly but that could just be been hunger or something. Sorry for the long post and thanks for reading.

Aria999 · 10/02/2024 12:44

It was the clearblue ovulation tests @theleavesfall24 and fairly regular 28 days

Isitthathardtobekind · 10/02/2024 14:09

@Hollycharlie sorry to hear all of that.
I would say it would be normal to not have symptoms if you didn’t realise last time until 6 weeks. I was last pregnant at 42 nearly 2 years ago now and didn’t have any symptoms until around day 33 (painful breasts) then that was it for another week or so. I wasn’t expecting it either then - it was a total shock. I thought the breast pain was AF on the way.

Isitthathardtobekind · 10/02/2024 14:12

@Brit80 how are you? Have you tried another test?

Hollycharlie · 10/02/2024 15:11

@Isitthathardtobekind thank you so much. I’m very nervous to test I think I’ll give it a few more days. You see so many on here saying they had symptoms from day 6 that I think I must be totally out again but no af or it coming is a good plus I guess. ❤️

Lin380 · 10/02/2024 15:33

I’m 44 and expecting our naturally conceived baby, had first scan and all hopefully well so far (although a much higher chance of downs than previous pregnancies , although classed still low risk).
I know of lots of people who had struggled to conceive in their 40s or had miscarriages or abnormalities so felt very unlikely to happen or get to this stage. Plus cycle had also stated to get a few days shorter last year or 2.
Had always conceived very quickly before but not used any contraception since birth of last child several years ago but weren’t trying as such as already have children we’d planned. I don’t want to give you false hope as it is much more difficult to become pregnant naturally in your mid 40s but just wanted to let you know it can happen

theleavesfall24 · 13/02/2024 05:24

@Hollycharlie how are you going? Did you end up doing a test?

I think I'm out again for this cycle 😟
Thinking may need to go back to using OPK's.

Hollycharlie · 13/02/2024 07:28

@theleavesfall24 morning thanks for asking. AF turned up this morning so god knows what’s going on . It’s ok though if it’s not meant to be I’m ok with that. Sorry to hear you think your out but isn’t out until af shows 🙈🙈

Just to add another positive story. I had my last daughter at just 43. Had always got pregnant relatively easily but tried after Covid at 40 and it wasn’t working. Reluctantly thought I must have missed my chance as periods were getting closer together and lighter. Continued having unprotected sex as thought that my times was over and fell pregnant at 42. Higher chances of downs, but not huge and daughter is perfect and healthy and just turned one. I’d written myself off but it obviously only takes one egg! Good luck everyone

theleavesfall24 · 13/02/2024 09:23

@Walkthelakes could I ask how long your cycles were?
We're you using OPK's at all?

Sounds the same as us, it had happened really quickly before 40 but then after although we weren’t ‘trying’ as happy and felt lucky to already have our family nothing really happened anyway and cycles down from 28 to 24-25 days then just before 44 found out expecting!! Is a worry with Downs etc and screening results have come back as higher risk than ever previously but so far they say everything looks to be progressing well

When we were trying we used OPKs and I did some temping but it didn’t work. As we already had kids I think it was easier to think this isn’t going to work and just draw a line under it then if it had been my first or second. I think we maybe tried them for about a year? I had my previous daughter at 39 years and 9 months and had fallen pregnant pretty much 1st cycle. My cycles had changed after 40 to about 23-24 days. Also my period were very light. I think we tried consciously for about a year probably when my previous daughter turned one and then gave up. I just assumed it wasn’t happening so didn’t use contraception but wasn’t in any way tracking or even thinking of conception. I must have fallen pregnant at about 42 years and 4 months as I ended up giving birth not even a month after my 43rd birthday. I didn’t find the pregnancy itself tougher and actually had a lot more monitoring which put my mind at rest but other than the age factor was a really healthy pregnancy. I wish you all lots of baby dust. Don’t lose hope as is totally possible—nothing for me for about 2 years and then a positive test!

theleavesfall24 · 14/02/2024 05:55

@Walkthelakes thanks so much for your reply. It does give me hope but I do feel like at 45 my chances have passed 😓
It took 7 months to conceive my DD but I was 39 then and gave birth a week before my 40th.
My DH was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes when we fell pregnant! We were having tests and everything came back fine but he had this diagnosis just when we fell pregnant.
I'm thinking his medication may be impacting his fertility to have another....
But he wasn't taking medication before we conceived and would have had high blood sugar readings so ? Not sure...

Lin380 · 15/02/2024 09:20

Good luck

theleavesfall24 · 15/02/2024 23:31

@Lin380 thanks. Did you have anything else to add? Are you TTC over 40 too?

Rosyposy26 · 16/02/2024 09:11

Hey I’m 42 nearly 43 and fell pregnant December first month after coming off mini pill, but mc on the 2nd this month. We started trying again straight away. Tracked ovulation and now in tww. Not really expecting anything to happen this month. Just wanted to say hi and it’s a comfort to read the positive stories.

???? Yes I’m 44 and currently expecting as explained in higher posts on this thread

Hi everyone, I'm 39, almost 40, and will be coming off contraception (mirena) soon to start TTC. I am very overweight, but haven't managed to lose it so I think it's time to just get going.

I'm taking folic acid and had bloods done to check my blood checks and hormonal levels last year and all was good.

Other than that I haven't really an idea of what I should be doing to maximise chances, and any advice or encouragement would be welcome.

I have a 10 year old stepson who lives with my and my husband full time, so we have our little family already, and I don't want to get too obsessed with TTC, but obviously want to maximise my chances as well.

Best of luck to you all!

Hi @Lin380 - would you mind me asking whether you were 44 when you conceived and how far in you are? I turned 44 in Jan. I was really hopeful this month but it didn’t work out and now after a year, I’m not sure it will.

Conceived just before my 44th birthday and 19 weeks now. Was still getting regular periods and signs of ovulation although not every month and cycles had got shorter. We weren’t trying as such but had perhaps allowed a few chances over the previous year and this was the first month it happened. Previous to 40 it tended to happen on the first month. Was very aware of high chance of early m/c at this age so very nervous till first scan and now nervous about anomaly scan as very aware of much higher risk of genetic issues. First trimester screening results technically low risk but far higher ‘risk’ results than previous pregnancies. Otherwise feeling no different to previous pregnancies.

Good luck!! Xx

Isitthathardtobekind · 18/02/2024 18:37

@Lin380 thank you! sounds like all is going well for you!

I got pregnant straight away at 31, 32 and 42. Just before 43 I thought I’d like to try again and it’s been over a year now although mostly as a see what happens thing.

Think I’ll give it another couple of months as I feel currently like if it’s going to happen, I would like to be 44 still - any longer and I’ll be 45. At 43 I thought will have to give up by 44. I’ve had shorter cycles for nearly 6 months and this one was suddenly longer so thought it might be it, but not!

This thread has given me hope, but really I think it’s not meant to be anymore for me.

Sounds like you’ve got a good chance of it happening if got pregnant straight away at 42! Did you have a baby at 42? Only asking as if you were breastfeeding then fertility is very much reduced initially.
Prior to this pregnancy, I’d had shorter cycles for more than 6 months. Plus one cycle that had been longer then followed by very sudden heavy painful bleeding, almost felt like continuous labour contraction for about an hour after, felt very faint and had to lie down and thought might need to call an ambulance. Had never had a positive test but did wonder after it had been a m/c that has never progressed to stage of giving a positive test. Although had previous early m/c at 4 weeks at 38 and had no pain or particularly heavy bleeding.
With this pregnancy got lots of cramping (like having to walk around to ease it) for a couple of days around time due on (which don’t remember with previous pregnancies) so thought m/c inevitable especially given the stats but baby stayed 🥰 Think it will happen for you x
