Playingthewaitinggame · 19/02/2008 11:50

ok maybe not the broom stick

Diege · 19/02/2008 11:52

Playing , you speak my language . Think spring bulbs is a really good idea. M&S do some nice ones in glass pots, quite reasonable too?

popcornprincess · 19/02/2008 11:54

nope, I think she is early 50's. Arsenic is a strong contender!!!! . We got her books for xmas and she is so not glam!!! oh this is so hard and as usual DH says 'I don't mind, you choose something' to which I shout 'SHE'S YOUR BLOODY MOTHER'. I will have a poke about on the M&S website. Thanks

popcornprincess · 19/02/2008 11:55

wiht regards to the broomstick - she has a whole host of those, one of every day of the week.

BeMyLilBaby · 19/02/2008 11:57

thanks all will go with that cot when time comes, already ahve a bed so will only have to last tilll they are big enough for a bed..
least thats one thing on the cheap!!

im such a buggy novice....my thinking is tho that this will last for DC1 and 2 and maybe 3 if we have have a third... arg the choices!!

re Mil pop, i wld use it as an excuse for soemthing off cos i dont particularly like mine but dp always buys for his family, me for mine.. how about a scarf and brolly set if you dislike her, perfume if you like her? x

NatalieJane · 19/02/2008 12:29

LOL at the arsenic, any going spare for my MIL? I don't think even that would rid me of her TBH!

I like BB's idea of scarf and brolly, but might be wrong time of the year for it, it is freezing today but hopefully this time next month it should be starting to warm up a bit, or I am I wasting my time even hoping?!

How about a nice photo frame? Always goes down well with my MIL.

BB, if you look around you can pick up most of the things quite cheaply. But expecting things to cost more than they do is never a bad thing when it comes to baby stuff. I think shops see us mugs coming....!

You have to work out how things add up in packages as well. You can get a nice cot for £60, but then if you needed a wardrobe (£150 cheapest) and dresser/chest of drawers (again £150 cheapest), you can get sets from £300, some even cheaper if you look hard enough. Same with the buggy, sometimes it works out better to buy it all together, sometimes it is cheaper to buy separates. Thank god for the wonders fo the internet, I can't imagine heavily pregnant women wondering around all the stores to find the cheapest price for everything!

NatalieJane · 19/02/2008 12:31

Ohhh, meant to say as well BB, if you are hoping for the buggy to last DC2 and maybe 3, you will be much better off spending a bit more, DS1's Graco was hardly used and he was out of it by 18 months, but the state it was in, it would never have lasted another DC.

BeMyLilBaby · 19/02/2008 12:38

he he! Waddling round, that'd be me!

Luckily we already have the furniture for the babies room, as were just replacing ours, we'l moove our old stuff into bubs room, so will have wardrobe, draws, shelves, that will do, until they get quite a bit older, alread have a bed too, so will literally just need cot for the bedroom. Might invest in a cot top changer? what do you all reckon? its either that or changing them on a matt on the bed?

i spose i come accross as a bit tight, im not, just dont want to spend money we dnt have to!!
i figure less we spend the more we have saved so i dont have to go straight back to work??

so furniture wise im sorted... ish!

i am a list type person so here's my list let me know if ive missed anything important!!

Cot
changing mat
buggy - with carseat etc raincover footmuff bag
travel cot
steriliser - recommendations pls??
clothes nappies wipes etc...
dummy
bouncy chair
baby gym thingy
Waht else? that cant be it?

apologies for loooong post!! x

NatalieJane · 19/02/2008 12:54

These cot top changers seem to be popping up everywhere lately. I personally wouldn't use one because when you take the nappy off and they wee.... which they always do..... the wee would go all over the cot and you will be changing cot sheets all the time.

You can just use the top of the drawers you have already, just put a changing mat down and hey presto Or if you were going to get a cot top changer (about £40-£50?) you could buy something like this or this extra storage space, and the second saves you buying a baby bath, and breaking your back. I am sure you can get those sort of changers cheaper as well, I was just using them as examples

You will also find a breast pump and/or bottles handy for BF/FF which ever you want to do.

You don't have to use a dummy, we never have.

If you might not have a car by then, why do you need a car seat?

OMG, cat's just brought another bloody bird in.....

BeMyLilBaby · 19/02/2008 12:59

bloomin cat, quick rescue it!!
We have a car ( was given to us) just cant drive it lol! But will go in family cars so car seat handy to have,
might get tht first pic you posted NJ as that would be ideal, think drawer top would be a bit narrow... and storage space would be mega handy!

wanna hear something sad? i already hve a pump... got it free from a promo on here... so will just have to get bottles...

What sterilisers do you guys use, electric or microwave? x

Diege · 19/02/2008 12:59

BB, I found the best sterilisers the microwaveable ones. Just put water in the bottom, 4 mins or thereabout, and voila sterilised bottles! You can also fill for cold water sterilising too. Mine cost about &12 from Morrisons, and did all 3 dds .
Agree with Nat about changing units. I'd just stick to mat on drawers or even bed/floor, but this will be my 4th time and if it was my first, or even second, would feel I had to at least 'try' everything out!

NatalieJane · 19/02/2008 13:03

Oh yes, I forgot the prize pump LOL

We had a microwave steriliser for DS1 was easy as pie as Diege says. For DS2 I bought an Avent baby box thing from TRU, it had an electric steriliser, breast pumps, milk storage pot things, and some other bits and bobs, never used the steriliser so don't know how good/bad it would have been!

kayzisbroody · 19/02/2008 13:15

Hi all. Its lunch time and I could really do with a nap, but I'd never go back to work.

I use an electric steriliser and its great but takes up a bit of room. Its an Avent one.

Playingthewaitinggame · 19/02/2008 13:21

wow, we really getting into detail now ladies. Would it be really bad not to bother with a changing unit and just use a changing mat on the floor? Seems far easier in my little mind. And.. bottles, steriliser and all that jazz is just one step too far yet before I am pg!!

NatalieJane · 19/02/2008 13:25

Playing, it is fine to use a chaning mat on the floor, I find it easier to change him on his dresser simply because I'm not then bending over him breaking my back, and getting pins and needles in my legs at the same time.

My mum changes my sisters boys on her lap, I couldn't do that if someone paid me! Wayyy too fiddly, but it works for her.

I have a changing unit which I think is great but I didnt want it its only because mil's friend had twins and was giving it away.
Once they get to the point where they can roll over a changing unit is a big pain in the ass.

Playingthewaitinggame · 19/02/2008 13:31

I do see what you mean Natalie but I am very aware that unless said nappy has leaked everywhere and there happen to be no spare clothes downstairs or I run out of downstairs nappies, I am far to lazy to climb the stairs to change baby so will end up doing it on the lounge floor much of the time anyway. That sounds dreadful doesn't it

kayzisbroody · 19/02/2008 13:34

I change ds on the floor. Its so much easier for me to do, but thats only because as soon as he is on his changing unit he tries to roll off.

kayzisbroody · 19/02/2008 13:44

Right, I'm off back to work. I'm really looking forward to getting 9 months of maternity leave.
Speak to you later
Bye x

Teuch · 19/02/2008 14:14

We got a changing unit - because it was part of a package - but DS was changed mostly on the low coffee table, then the floor when we moved. No way I'd be going upstairs for every change!! And yes, piddles everywhere especially form boys...best ones being up my sleeve and over his own head

I do it on my knee as well...DH always very impressed by that, especially now he is 2.2 and a wriggly monkey!!
