Period after miscarriage

Hello,

I had a MC at 8 weeks on 5th March, bled around 10ish days then on and off spotting until 3 weeks after, when I got my negative HCGs.

I spotting a few days ago and then heavy period started on 8th April, however today, it’s light brown spotting as if you’d get at the end of your period, but it seems very short with only two full days of heavy bleeding. I usually have 4-5 day periods so not long anyway but does this sound normal?

We are TTC again this month so I will start OPKs just in case.

Hey!

I heard periods post miscarriage are usually heavy and awful however I miscarried at 14 weeks in January. 5 weeks later had my first period and was similar to you. Think I totalled only 3 days of bleeding. My cycles have gone back to 28-30 days. Ovulating around cd15-17. Not managed to concieve again yet but periods are slightly calmer, maximum 5 days and not that heavy. Had all my hormones checked and doctors aren't concerned so I think what you're experiencing can be normal. Maybe we are just the lucky ones that don't get the ridiculously heavy flow!

DHB · 10/04/2023 11:00

@Ttcmumma Ah thank you for sharing your experience! They don’t really tell you what to expect in the coming weeks do they!

Perhaps it’s normal then! I will start LH testing tomorrow I think!

Hope you get your rainbow soon x

@DHB no it's such an emotional journey as it is but I lived on Google searches and Mumsnet for atleast a month post miscarriage so found as much info as I could lol. I think you sound fine tho!
Yes start testing, I just used internet cheapies and tested everyday until I found my ovulation again and went from there really.

Thank you! Baby dust to you ♥️

suz2285 · 10/04/2023 11:34

Sorry to hear about your MC. It was Exactly the same for me, MC at 8 weeks, bled for 10 days with the MC, ovu 2 weeks after, and then my luteal phase was only 9 days.

First period was only 2 days length wise where I normally have light for 3-4 days but this was nothing to full on heavy in the space of an hour, really heavy for 2 days then only spotting on the 3rd and done....

I've gone right back to a normal cycle now on the first cycle after MC, Ovu on day 14 and now in the TWW again....

DHB · 10/04/2023 11:59

@suz2285 We are literally the same then! I’m so pleased to hear from others, you just drive yourself insane otherwise don’t you.

Hope all goes well for you!!

xx

@DHB it's so useful having a place like this where you can see other peoples real life experiences, because old Dr Google sometimes doesn't help e.g. "first period after MC can be slightly heavier or lighter or longer or shorter than usual" "you may ovu early, or not at all" "you may get pregnant again right away or it could take 6 months" very confusing the whole thing....

Hope you're doing ok.. my emotions have been very up and down since my MC!

DHB · 10/04/2023 12:39

@suz2285 Ha! Yes exactly that!! I’ve tried googling but it’s made me even more confused!!

Same here, very up and down. I was doing ok until AF came, then I felt crap again. Now I just can’t wait for it to be over so we can try again.

Hope you’re ok, this place is a godsend for support!

So sorry to hear about your mc, OP. I had a D&C in March, got my first period 4weeks later (last week) - it was so light though, more than spotting but barely anything there. So I’m a bit concerned too! I was planning to wait another cycle before TTC anyway but I’m worried my periods won’t go back to normal in time. Are you not meant to try if your period’s really light in case the womb lining isn’t thick enough to support a baby? I don’t know! They don’t tell you these types of things when you’ve had a miscarriage do they?!

Sorry I’ve got nothing useful to add, but very best of luck for you anyway xx

DHB · 10/04/2023 13:03

@JumbleJo Sorry to hear that :(

God knows, this is the issue with all the ‘what happens next’ they don’t tell you enough do they, same as when you leave hospital with a newborn, you’re sort of just left to your own devices!

All I was advised, was no sex whilst still bleeding in the initial bleed from the miscarriage due to risk of infection, but other than that it was just whenever we felt ready to TTC again.

Hope it happens for you soon 🌈

suz2285 · 10/04/2023 13:21

@JumbleJo wow a few of us in the same boat on the same timeline... would be good to all keep in touch! my MC was very end of Feb so exactly the same timelines for us all!

I've heard with the D&C it's more likely to be light period after as they effectively remove the lining so much less there when it's period time, i had a natural miscarriage so it's more "normal" in terms of what is left behind i guess. But it will go back to normal, you can definitely keep trying - my "normal" period is usually quite light anyway so i'm not sure if that means anything, i've never thought about any of these things before TTC!

@DHB I wasn't given much info at all, I got a leaflet and just told I could try again when ready - the leaflet was "pregnancy after loss" so basically assuming I was just immediately going to try again which we have but i thought it was a weirdly named brochure! I asked about waiting one cycle to try again but was told there was no need, however we did try again but didn't get pregnant on that first ovu and after the short luteal phase i def don't think my body was ready again yet!

Same as me I felt worse this time around and after my first period, I thought I was doing ok but then felt really sad, probably worse than during the actual MC, blooming hormones! It feels like so long between trying/TWW etc and I also feel like we "wasted" 2 months being pregnant as well which is horrible because of course it wasn't a waste, but to come out of it with no baby then have to go back and start this whole thing again is already exhausting....

DHB · 10/04/2023 13:26

@suz2285 Yes, give you a leaflet and that’s about it!

I feel sad that we didn’t conceive before the first period, as I’d read of so many others but like you, I had such a short luteal phase, there is no way my body was ready. I’m hoping this month is the one 🤞🏼

I agree, it feels like time is going so slowly, even just this period is doing my head in, plus now I’ve started with normal blood again, after initially thinking it had stopped this morning, damn.

OP posts:
suz2285 · 10/04/2023 13:32

@DHB totally, I actually wanted to wait to TTC until after first period cos i know they prefer that but when I had my scan to check all ok after MC they said it looked like i was about to ovulate and then I was like well we can't really just not try - what if that was the one and we'd skipped it! But yeah body obv wasn't ready yet anyway....

Also I was a bit weirded out about having a December baby, but this cycle my due date would be 27th Dec and at this point I really don't care, just want that healthy baby!

DHB · 10/04/2023 13:40

@suz2285 It must have been a really quick ovulation then mustn’t it! But yes, I definitely agree and I’d be the say, thinking what if, if you didn’t try!

Haha! Well, I’m 8th December and our 8 year old is 23rd December so we have a very busy month but it’s actually not really a problem! Our Daughter always puts a slice of her birthday cake out for Santa on Christmas Eve, it’s lovely!

OP posts:
suz2285 · 10/04/2023 13:52

@DHB aw that's so nice to hear because it seems to be a mix of December people loving or hating their birthday so close to Christmas! my last Ovu would have been around the 4th Dec and I was thinking most first babies go late so it'll be too close to Christmas, but this cycle I don't care! though at 5DPO i def don't feel pregnant yet so goodness knows.... though obviously still very very early days!

Yeah it's weird how quick you ovu after losing a pregnancy, mine was about a week after I stopped bleeding and then only another just over a week until I was bleeding again. That was a really long month and i'm glad it's over, I really do not want to have to go through that again.... and I really hope I don't have to!

Ella31 · 10/04/2023 13:59

I had a chemical six weeks ago, still no ovulation or period. Very stressed about it.

Daniki · 10/04/2023 14:02

@DHB totally normal, your body will be all over the place with hormones. After my first Mc I had a normal period and nonissues but after my second one Jesus my first period was horrendous it actually felt like the Mc again and I wasn't fit to go into work that day with the pain, the next cycle came 5 days early and last near 2 weeks, the next one came 2 weeks after that but was normal flow and length so just takes time to regulate.
I was worried and mentioned to my gynaecologist and she said she wouldn't be worried about that at all that it's completely normal to have diff cycles afterwards x

DHB · 10/04/2023 19:53

@suz2285 Ah no we’re lovers here!! Our little girl was due on 17th December but decided to wait until the day before Christmas Eve, couldn’t even sit down on my poor vagina for a Christmas dinner 😂😂
So quick!! Hopefully I’m quick after this period and I can get the hang of these tests too!

@Ella31 Sorry to hear that :( It’s nice that we’re all able to understand each other on this thread though. Your time will come too 💗

@Daniki Ah gosh bless you, that must have been a horrible time! Hopefully mine will settle soon then, just don’t want it to mean we’re missing our chances!

OP posts:
suz2285 · 10/04/2023 20:38

@DHB haha that did make me smile, your poor vagina! 😂😂

DHB · 10/04/2023 21:04

@suz2285 😂 Awful! That was the only downside, I mean I couldn’t even pull a cracker in fear of everything splitting open again 😂🫣

OP posts:
suz2285 · 10/04/2023 21:28

@DHB more than you bargained for with a cracker that's for sure 😂 least you can laugh about it now!

DHB · 11/04/2023 11:36

@suz2285 Oh definitely!! If you don’t laugh you’ll cry 😂

In other news, AF has definitely gone now woo!! Taken the first ov test as well today, has a faint T line but that’s still a negative anyway isn’t it

OP posts:
suz2285 · 11/04/2023 14:24

@DHB yeah what ovu tests are you using... the ones with 2 lines are basically all negative until the test line is the same strength as the control line, i scan mine into the premom app it gives you a little numerical value and then tells you your "peak".... this month i tested from CD7 i think as i wasn't sure when i was going to ovulate, and it felt like a long time before i got the positive line on CD13... from days 11-13 I was testing 2-3 times a day as I didn't want to miss the peak!

DHB · 11/04/2023 15:07

@suz2285 Well I’m just getting annoyed now, didn’t have any bleeding until this afternoon so perhaps AF hasn’t gone yet, bloody tease!

I just went with Boots test strips, purely because I will need quite a few as I have no idea when I ovulated prior to the MC, let some now!

I downloaded the Premom app, seems quite good. I put my first OPK in today, it said 0.3, bless it 😂

OP posts:
suz2285 · 11/04/2023 15:10

@DHB yeah I just order the easy @ home ones on Amazon cos you burn through them! Normally I wouldn't start testing so early but after the MC you never know what's going on so you use a ton of them!

Yeah premom will keep you right... I'm usually like 0.1-0.2 when i start and then it goes up to 0.4-5 and then up to 0.8-1.2 etc at peak then drops again quickly, it's really handy though for seeing the numbers rather than guessing if the line is dark enough! My peak after my MC was the biggest reading i'd ever had on premom, this month after it's higher again! So hopefully that's a good sign!

DHB · 11/04/2023 15:14

@suz2285 Well I didn’t realise I need to do them twice a day as it’s gets closer so I’ve got two more boxes ordered 😂 Like a full time job this, isn’t it!

Ah ok! That’s handy to know!! I’ll keep a close eye on it, just thought I’d test from now as I don’t know how quickly I’ll ovulate so I’d rather be safe than sorry!!
