Would you try for a December baby

I don’t know if I’m being silly here.. I think we have missed our chance to conceive this month which I am gutted about. However next month would mean a December and then a January baby. I always feel sorry for my friends born in December/Jan as I feel their birthdays get overlooked a bit.. plus I can imagine it is difficult buying birthday and Christmas presents for your little one at the same time! So just wondering if anyone has an opinion on whether they would intentionally miss out trying for a December baby or am I being ridiculous because at the end of the day that could be the month that we do fall?

2 of my children have December & January birthdays. Neither of them get overlooked and we don’t struggle to buy them gifts either.
Obviously there won’t be as much of a fuss when they’re adults but id say rhat happens whatever months they’re born!

To be honest; my DD and DS1 always get more RSVPS to parties than my august born DS2 as people are usually on holiday during his birthday.

Lola19 · 04/03/2023 14:02

Good to hear from your personal experience thank you! I do feel I’m maybe being silly!!

It’s not silly, don’t worry! I think it’s so easy to overthink things but do try not to worry. So long as it’s not Christmas Day (😂) it’ll be fine.

Lola19 · 04/03/2023 14:10

God that’s definitely going to happen to me now 😂😂 if it does I’ll come back and comment on this post to give you a laugh!

If I was 22 and healthy, then yes I'd avoid Dec/Jan. If I was 35, or overweight, or had pcos/endo, or my DP had health issues, then no I wouldn't risk skipping two chances.
So it depends!

My eldest is a December birthday. His due date was Christmas eve but thankfully he came early. It is tricky to organise a birthday party in December but he isn't particularly bothered and so far is happier doing something smaller. We haven't had any problems buying presents for him. I usually look out for stuff from the summer onwards so the cost is staggered over a few months.
I'd say the most annoying thing was after he had turned 1 and was starting to walk, the weather was so wet and cold jan-March that he didn't get much outside walking practice until he was a bit older. But in the grand scheme of things this doesn't matter.

itsthefinalcountdown1 · 04/03/2023 14:27

I wanted a baby, didn't really bother me when I got them. Personally the only annoying birthday days would be 24/25/26 Dec and we'd have just found a way to make it work. My Jan baby loves her birthday!

SarahLHs · 04/03/2023 14:30

Me and my husband had the same discussion a year ago and agreed that we wouldn't try for 2 months if we didn't get pregnant that month to avoid December/January baby.

Ended up being pregnant so had a November baby and not sure if I actually would have been able to wait if it had come down to it haha.

GotABeatForYouMama · 04/03/2023 14:40

My birthday is December 25th, it's a horrible day to be born. Go for January/February instead.

DRS1970 · 04/03/2023 14:41

My birthday is in December, and is generally overshadowed by Christmas.

allgoodthings84 · 04/03/2023 15:17

Depends on age and whether any possibly fertility stepping stones. If there’s a chance you have less “good eggs” then the cycle(s) you skip could have been your chances. I’m over 35 and when I was ttc #2 (pregnant now) we decided to not skip any cycles. I’m having an august baby which wasn’t my favourite month but turns out I’m not bothered I’m just happy to be pregnant.

Un7breakable · 04/03/2023 15:29

I personally am not skipping because of my age, I'm not going to waste a chance. Depends on your age - 20s fine, over 35 I would'nt

wonderofu · 04/03/2023 15:38

If you want a baby surely you don't care which month? I know I didn't but each to their own.

wingingit1987 · 04/03/2023 15:43

We just had a January baby. I won’t lie, Christmas was a bit tense as I was very far on and at term by then. I was so worried I would go into labour Christmas Day as we have 4 other children and didn’t want to miss dinner or them getting their gifts. (I’m a nurse so I often work Christmas and new year too so didn’t want the baby’s birthday to fall on a major holiday). However, we had our wee one on 5th jan and all was fine. i was super organised and had Christmas all in and wrapped by late October to make life easier with older ones.

Summer is a horrible time to be heavily pregnant- I can safely say after having 2 sept and one oct baby. So I enjoyed this pregnancy a wee bit more as we still managed a few summer trips away before I was too heavy.

CatOfTheLand · 04/03/2023 15:48

I have two December babies - both near enough Christmas Day. One has their birthday party end of Nov and the other in Feb when they were due.

One of them was born over a month early so you'd need to put of ttc for another three months to be really sure for something that's not really an issue.

August birthdays are worse so would you want to avoid them too?

Thecatisboss · 04/03/2023 15:59

Dd due date was 14th January but due to pre-eclampsia was actually born 22nd December. Yes December is a bit annoying (mine is also December as I arrived 2 months early) but not worth worrying about too much.

Ginger1982 · 04/03/2023 16:26

I'm a December birthday. It's a nice time of year but also difficult to organise things and it does sometimes feel as though it's taken over by Christmas. I wouldn't pick it if it could be avoided.

VixFromThe6ix · 04/03/2023 16:46

My first is January and we are trying now so if we succeed quickly it would be a December or January baby again.
I hear what you're saying about bday, but I also think it will be up to you. You can always make it separate and special for them. It might be harder to book as everyone gets busy in December but you can do things like bday trips and such to make it memorable.
I wouldn't let it stop me

Scottishgirl85 · 04/03/2023 16:48

Just had our 3rd, born 09 Jan. Love his birthday, it'll brighten up every boring January. Also, mat leave will be fab with a summer clear of newborn stage, and he'll really enjoy his 1st Christmas

Hopingforbetterluck · 04/03/2023 16:54

I’ve got two January babies. DS was due the day before Christmas Eve but thankfully hung on until after Christmas. It’s an expensive time of year but a bit of forward planning is all that’s needed.

I desperately wanted my second baby to be a spring or summer baby but having suffered three losses in a row I couldn’t have cared less what month she was born in the end. I wouldn’t put off conceiving because of when they would be due. I completely get where you’re coming from as I was the same but at the end of the day they could come early/late anyway.

Good luck!

ShesThunderstorms · 04/03/2023 17:01

One of my kid's birthdays is a week before Christmas and granted she's not had many birthdays yet, but the ones she has had have always been absolutely lovely. Everyone's in the festive spirit, there's twinkling lights everywhere and there's good food around! Cons are we have two kids, so Christmas shopping does end up the price of having 3 kids really with buying birthday presents too. And it's obviously always cold.
I have a friend who's even closer to Christmas and I asked her last year if she'd ever change her birthday and she said absolutely not, she's always loved her December birthday!

I don’t think the OP does care. She’s thinking whether the child would!

@Lola19 I have a mid December boy. It was quite magical having him at that time of year in many ways but he had his second birthday December 2022 and blimey, it was manic, the house was just absolutely crammed full of shit stuff and I was exhausted!

My ‘month to avoid’ would have been end of October/November due to July/august babies but am 42 so couldn’t wait … guess which month I got my BFP in!? Xmas Grin

cptartapp · 04/03/2023 17:06

DS1 is a December birthday. The downsides of that are far outweighed by being one of the eldest in the school year. I never wanted a summer born for this reason, and so luckily timed my pregnancies accordingly.

PottedSprout · 04/03/2023 17:10

I think having a Dec birthday would bother me tbh, only late Dec though. Having a January bday is much worse IMO! At least people are in party mode in Dec.

I'd avoid ttc in April to avoid Jan because all my Jan born friends hate their birthdays. Only if you're in the position to miss it though!

WhatNoRaisins · 04/03/2023 17:11

It's a personal choice I think. I avoided it myself for fairly selfish reasons. Didn't want to add to the logistics of the Christmas season and wasn't at a point where I was overly worried about my biological clock. Doesn't make it wrong either way it's what makes sense to you.
