Is it that common to get pregnant at first try?

It's my fertile period and DH and I just decided to try this morning. There is a part of me that is still unsure (the last time I properly tried, I got the morning after as I was so unsure!)

There is a part of me that is just telling myself - leave it; if it happens, it happens. Is it common to get pregnant from first try?

Bearing in mind DH and I have not used artificial contraception for 8 years, only the withdrawal method and we have never gotten pregnant. Have taken the morning after but only 5 times over 8 years...

I got pregnant with my first on my first try. My second was a surprise when I was a few days late getting the pill thanks to lockdown so technically first time too.

Got2besoon · 13/01/2023 15:51

Something like 30-40% get pregnant first month of trying.

However, this includes people trying multiple times in the fertile period not just once.

The younger you are the higher the odds.

I've been trying for number 2 for 14 months now and I'm only 32 so 🤷

Sleepyquest · 13/01/2023 15:53

I did...twice

TallulahBetty · 13/01/2023 15:53

I did, 3 weeks after coming off the pill, I know I am extremely fortunate.

MolesOnPoles · 13/01/2023 15:54

I’ve done it three times! But that includes a rather horrid MC so I’m very aware that two lines doesn’t equal a baby.

Whataretheodds · 13/01/2023 15:55

I did 2/2. We had used withdrawal 'method' successfully for 18 months.

5 morning after pills in 8 years: was that because the withdrawal didn't happen?

katienana · 13/01/2023 15:55

It happened to me twice, we had multiple goes in the fertile window though. I felt very fortunate. And also glad that I'd been on the ball with contraception in the past!!

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 13/01/2023 15:55

Dc2 is the product of a single dtd that month. We changed our mind about having a second child so quickly the next day but it was too late Grin

EggsActly · 13/01/2023 15:55

I got pregnant with both my children in the first month of trying.

In fact with DC1, we only had sex once that month as DH then travelled away for work afterwards so I can pinpoint the exact night of conception! I was also a bit unsure and thinking it would take a while…

Cinnamonandcoal · 13/01/2023 16:00

I did twice. Was 30/33.

Clearly given the number of accidental pregnancies from one night stands etc it must happen a fair bit.

Jomummy1013 · 13/01/2023 16:01

I've always been very lucky and got pregnant extremely easily. I got pregnant with my first child on the first month trying. Second child second month trying. Third child wasn't planned and was a result of one time only when I was drunk!!
I am pregnant now and got pregnant second month trying and I am 41 so I am incredibly lucky. So yes it's very possible xx good luck x

BeyondMyWits · 13/01/2023 16:03

Definitely... 2 for 2 here. We used to joke that DH used to only need to wink at me and I'd get pregnant... thank god for the menopause!

Sex once, first month of trying with my second. But took months to get pregnant with my first.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/01/2023 16:10

5 MAP is a lot! You are basically using that as contraception

That’s extremely judgemental. How many times is acceptable, then? I reckon I’ve taken the MAP 5 times, maybe more, in my lifetime. So what? Thank goodness we have the option when accidents happen!

Alwayswonderedwhy · 13/01/2023 16:13

I did with both my pregnancies but no idea how common it is. Most of my friends took longer.

inky1991 · 13/01/2023 16:14

I stupidly assumed I would get pregnant quickly. Took me 19 months to conceive first child at age 30/31

In 8 years??? We had sex everyday in the first few years too. In the past few years, it varies a lot can be every two days or can be once a week. So at least 100 times we had sex in a year times 8- that is 5 out of 800.

I did try out the nuvaring and the contraceptive patch briefly but I was so crabby that I don't think I actually had much sex during that time. I was too busy biting DH's head off..

It’s probably more common than one might think. People who get pregnant easily generally don’t talk about it (unless asked directly).

If I think about my friends, two had fertility issues, one took about 18 months to conceive her first & only child, the other 5 all got pregnant easily (within a couple of months of trying) with all their children (and they were ranging from mid-20s-late30s).

Stepbumpstepbumpbump · 13/01/2023 16:17

I'd imagine under 50% in the first month but possibly more common in the younger bracket. I did 3 times (under 30). Really didn't expect it to happen immediately a third time, so we'd started trying earlier than we'd "planned."

Aphrathestorm · 13/01/2023 16:18

If you've been using withdrawal for 8 years and not got pregnant that would suggest to me that one or both of you has reduced fertility.

I'd want that tested first.

Raspberry290 · 13/01/2023 16:19

I did both times

ThatsGoingToHurt · 13/01/2023 16:20

I got pregnant on my first try to concieve my second child at 39! I conceived my first child at 36 but that took 6 months.

I have been worried about that which is why I am trying. Plus I married at 22 so in the first few years I was having daily sex and using withdrawal, I was actually quite young. I have spoken to a fertility expert and she said - you only know until you try.
