Is it that common to get pregnant at first try?

It's my fertile period and DH and I just decided to try this morning. There is a part of me that is still unsure (the last time I properly tried, I got the morning after as I was so unsure!)

There is a part of me that is just telling myself - leave it; if it happens, it happens. Is it common to get pregnant from first try?

Bearing in mind DH and I have not used artificial contraception for 8 years, only the withdrawal method and we have never gotten pregnant. Have taken the morning after but only 5 times over 8 years...

Yep three times.

Cuppasoupmonster · 13/01/2023 16:23

Yep. First month trying for DC1, second month trying for DC2.

If you've been using withdrawal for 8 years and not got pregnant that would suggest to me that one or both of you has reduced fertility.

I'd want that tested first.

DH is circumcised (not sure if this is TMI) and he reckons this might be why it's easier for him to 'withdraw'

I got pregnant with dc1 1st month of trying. Dc2, second month, but I think I timed my fertile window a bit off the 1st month.

B1993 · 13/01/2023 16:28

DS took 3 months, second pregnancy (miscarriage) was 2 months and then 1 month for current pregnancy. Relatively quick for all of my pregnancies but im surprised by all of the comments saying 50%+ for first try. I believe your chances of conception are only 10-25% per cycle (assuming you time sex with ovulation).

Anonymouslyposting · 13/01/2023 16:30

I got pregnant on the first month trying with both DC (second due in a week). But who knows, we could be v fertile or just v lucky. No way to predict it.

Having used the withdrawal method for so long with no accidents would make me a bit anxious but who knows - given that, I would see a fertility expert a little earlier than otherwise if you don’t get pregnant in the next six months (depending on your age).

Best of luck!

allgoodthings84 · 13/01/2023 16:30

We used the withdrawal menthol for 4.5 years with no issues. We was super careful with it though! When we started ttc I didn’t get pregnant for the first 4 cycles but then got pregnant 3 cycles in a row (had 2 early miscarriages/CPs) and am 8 weeks. Not conceiving when using withdrawal method doesn’t mean you will have problems conceiving. Just means you’ve done it properly or been lucky

when I got pregnant with my daughter it was a one off not being very careful time with my ex husband (different dad to current pregnancy).

Basically you have the same chance every cycle so just as likely to happen the first time than the second or fifth! Each cycle is a whole new chance like rolling dice

What do you mean by 'just decided to try this morning' and 'There is a part of me that is just telling myself - leave it' - as in don't take the MAP?

Sorry to be the dickhead who says this, but you really do not sound convinced & I'm of the unpopular opinion that to have kids, you should really want kids.

Maybe I've got it wrong & you've got money to spare, the work/childcare/maternity decisions sorted and you really, really want a child hence asking?

No, I've used withdrawal for ten years and have conceived 3 times all on the first try.

violetcuriosity · 13/01/2023 16:37

I fell pregnant both times I've tried first time, 8 years apart, two different partners.

Echobelly · 13/01/2023 16:39

With our oldest we definitely conceived on very first time. My mum told me she always conceived very easily. Second time took 4-5 months though.

I have been delaying it for years- wanted to wait until we bought our flat (done), wanted to wait until we could afford childcare (combined income of £110k and would have £2800 after full time childcare and mortgage), wanted to wait until we moved to a bigger flat (flat is on the market now).

I think that perhaps i could spend my life kicking the can down the road because there is always an optimal scenario. I mean honestly in London, there are many many people who don't feel comfortable even when on double our income and who feel like their home is too small. But if everyone waited, London would have no children.

I got pregnant on my first try when 27.
I got pregnant when actively trying to avoid pregnancy when I was 28.

Bobbyelvis4ever · 13/01/2023 16:50

I've been pregnant 4 times, and have 2 kids. All 4 were first time tries - 1 at 35, and 3 at 39.

MK85 · 13/01/2023 17:59

Nope not for me. Took 17 years to get pregnant but we just lost it

I did three times, I stopped taking the pill and two weeks later I got pregnant. My most fertile days are day around day 12 of my cycle.

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 18:03

I got pregnant 1st try 5 out of 6 times, and I was 41 for two of these. The 1 out of 6 I got pregnant 2nd try.

Littlegoth · 13/01/2023 18:03

I lost 4 of these though x

DrMarciaFieldstone · 13/01/2023 18:05

First time trying, twice. Failed contraceptive pill, once.

Many and family have struggled, this isn’t something I’ve told anyone in real life, but I suspect it’s more common than people let on for the same reason.

stargirl1701 · 13/01/2023 18:29

I did 4 times but the first was a MMC and the last a MC.

Choconut · 13/01/2023 18:32

I got pregnant first month of trying at 30 but I had been charting my temps so knew when I was fertile.

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 13/01/2023 18:34

EggsActly · 13/01/2023 16:12

That’s extremely judgemental. How many times is acceptable, then? I reckon I’ve taken the MAP 5 times, maybe more, in my lifetime. So what? Thank goodness we have the option when accidents happen!

Yeah but it isn't accidents with the OP, she is not using any form of contraception.

I know and for 8 years!!!

Yes I did for all three . Third time I was 37 . Consider myself very fortunate .
