I don't know if there are any threads already started but I've just officially found out I've got PCOS this morning - I've always known deep down. Please tell me it's not all bad I'm feeling very sorry for myself.
We've been TTC for 6 months - only 3 cycles. I supposedly ovulated on CD36 (now CD43) this cycle. Gynae reckons not preg cos uterus lining would've thickened. (Had a scan this morning)

Any hints/tips on treatment/TTC?
How to deal with symptoms?

How did Posh spice and Jools Oliver manage to fall preg?

Hi - this thread is a little out of date. We've got some more information on PCOS here. MNHQ

Congratulations DungunGirl!!!!

I am so pleased for you. My SIL is expecting in April, when she went for the scan yesterday he/she wouldn't uncross his/her legs. She was very annoyed.

If you want another one, there is nothing wrong with that. I know several people who have read this particular book which enables them to conceive a girl or boy using CM, BBT and loads of other methods, and each of my friends have got their desired sex baby. Of course us having PCOS makes it a little bit harder, but it's always worth a try. I guess I will see you on the baby number three thread in the future .

Well I am feeling so much better today. I think I can finally enjoy my pregnancy.

Keep in touch ok xxx

Hi Attila

Thanks for the advice. Going to have a look through the website and see what it says. Wish appointment would come round - not for another week - feel like ages away!! Had a funny feeling would end up with it but never mind.

Hope you are ok

x

Moonlit · 26/11/2008 11:09

emz29 - I don't know if you have had a chance to read this thread. Most of us have been on a roller coaster, but have been lucky enough to finally conceive. All I can say is remain positive, and definitely read our stories.

Good luck! x

FruitynNutty · 29/11/2008 18:26

Congrats dungun!!!
Well, I'm just going to keep going until I get my girl So lord knows how many I'll have!
Still, it's not up to me, it's up to my PCOS. I'm hoping it will be generous enough to give me another baby let alone lots more

Jill1977 · 28/12/2008 21:16

Hi All I am new here and just trying to get my head around all the internet terminology and my diagnosis of PCOS!! I was diasgnosed last Monday by gynae and he has given me metaformin and clomid. Completely baffled! I have a 2 year old who was conceived naturally and was referred because we are ttc but have had a period for 15 weeks! The gynae said I am a text book case. Would rather lose weight before getting pregnant (as if it will be that easy!). I have another appointment in 2 months but not sure whether he is expecting me to be ttc! Head in a muddle!! Has the metaformin helped others lose weight or is it still a real struggle? So much info and didn't really ask the right questions. Look forward to your advice x

Princess dolly

Have a look at Verity's website www.verity-pcos.org.uk. This is the charitable UK based organisation set up to help and support PCOSers.

Collette Harris has also written some very good publications with regards to PCOS.

PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and affects each woman with it very differently
What has your GP said about the hirsuitism (I do realise that some GPs are hopeless when it comes to PCOS). PCOS needs to be carefully managed as well.

Jill1977

Metformin and clomid sometimes work better than either on their own. However, taking met can give you the runs so do take Met slowly. Haven't taken Met myself but do know of that particular side effect.

What did the gynae say about the 15 week bleed; , was the cause established properly?.

I note you are being seen in two months time, you should ideally be seen monthly. If you run into any problems with the tablets see him sooner rather than later.

Clomid encourages the ovaries to work harder.
You should also be having internal ultrasound scans and or blood tests whilst on clomid as it can affect hormone levels markedly. No monitoring at all is a no-no - you have no way of knowing whether its working or not otherwise. Clomid should be given to PCOSers with a degree of caution anyway due to the above reason.

Verity's website may also be beneficial to you - have posted those details in my post to Princess Dolly.

HTH, any other questions just ask.

Attila

Jill1977 · 29/12/2008 21:00

Thanks Attila - are you a nurse or Dr or just well read on this subject?!! I have been told to build the met up gradually so hopefully I won't have too many side effects - just started it today. The Dr didn't give an exact cause of my 15 week bleed - he said that the womb lining was thickened which would explain the bleed - have been put on provera to stop it and start a normal period.

It is a minefield of information at the minute but hoping if I can lose weight that I might not need the clomid. Good time to start. My husband bought me a wii fit for christmas!!! So it will be getting well used!!
Thanks for your advice Attila

Jill

Moonlit · 01/01/2009 16:26

Hi Jill1977 - I took Metformin. I gradually increased my dose, but I still had the runs! However, it did help to shift about a stone without any adjustments to my diet. But when I started exercising and reduced my carbohydrate intake I managed to shift 1.5 stone and get pregnant.

Metformin is often combined with Clomid, but can be just as effective on it's own. PCOS ladies tend to also have a slight insulin resistance, therefore your body finds it difficult to break down carbs and stores them as fat, mainly around your mid region. I was off to see my consultant for Clomid after a referral from my GP when low and behold after 2 years of TTC, I discovered I was pregant. Getting pregnant with my DD (2.5 years) was easy, but with this one it has been a lot harder!

Hi princessdolly - Are you trying to concieve? If the answer is NO, your best bet is Dianette! If you can afford it go for laser, it worked wonders for me!

Good luck ladies!

Jill1977 · 01/01/2009 20:58

Hi Moonlit - thank you so much for your advice - very positive. Sounds a bit like me I didn't have too much bother conceiving my little boy - now 2 - but this time round has been terrible. It becomes an obsession! I really hope the met works and the weight will come off - the exercise and low GI diet are starting tomorrow so hopefully I will lose weight which will kick start the ovulation. Congratulations on number 2 hope you are keeping well and thanks again - positive advice for the new year!!!

Moonlit · 04/01/2009 19:48

Hi Jill1977 - I know about the obsession thing, I did a pregnancy test every month for two years!!!! Your positive attitude will help you to fight this PCOS battle. Sometimes we need to help ourselves, and that's exactly what you are doing. Good luck! I am always around checking this thread. So please feel free to ask anything.

tyra1 · 07/01/2009 00:28

hi!
just been reading the threads on here and metformin is mentioned i also read a lot about the benefits for pcos sufferers. im on clomid for the last 8mnths with no luck so asked the gynae to prescribe me metformin aswell as clomid as it could help but to my surprise i was refused!! was told i ddnt need it??!! where/how can i get hold of metformin?? fell like giving up sometimes as i hav been ttc for 3yrs.....

AttilaTheMeerkat · 07/01/2009 07:02

Hi

Metformin is not always prescribed to PCOS patients as not all of them are insulin resistant. PCOS is a very individualistic disorder and affects each woman with it very differently.

It is usually only prescribed by gynaes though some GPs prescribe it as well. Self prescribing this drug treatment is not advised.

With regards to clomid the usual maximum amount of time on this drug treatment is six months. It should also be given to PCOSers with a degree of caution as it can affect hormone levels markedly, not all PCOSers are suitable candidates to take this drug either. They should be looking at other treatment options after six months of clomid anyway as clomid resistance can occur in some PCOSers (injectible drugs, ovarian diathermy surgery are two other options).

In your situation I would seek a second opinion as a matter of course; are you a private patient or NHS?.

Verity's website may also be helpful as it has a lot of information on PCOS - it is www.verity-pcos.org.uk.

stillenacht · 07/01/2009 07:10

hi - sorry to hijack a bit - am looking for advice for my sister.

She is in her mid thirties - has PCOS and endometreosis. Last week she had her right tube and ovary removed (fortunately no disease). I know she would really like to have children. I know she has been taking injections and that she is soon to go down the IVF route - does anyone have any experience of the problems my poor sis has and can they give my sis any hope. Many thanks all xxxx

Moonlit · 07/01/2009 11:03

tyra1 - I was given Metformin by my GP, because I was very overweight. However, my GP did refuse to give me Clomid because she said I was unsuitable and referred me to a consultant and to ultimately leave the decision to her instead. Which was very sensible. Since I managed to conceive with exercise and a low carb diet.

There is a strong link between weight and PCOS. Loosing weight seems to be the key. But as Attila has said PCOS is a individualistic disorder.

Good luck!

dorothygale · 07/01/2009 13:34

what are the requirements/criteria to get clomid?
I have had PCOS diagnosed for years and am currently TTC. My GP seems unwilling to give me clomid without undergoing tests etc which i was a bit surprised at as previously I was told that if i was TTC i would just be prescribed clomid -it feels like I am being rediagnosed which is frustrating as I am in my late 30s.
Also are there any medical alternatives to Metformin- as this makes me sick!

AttilaTheMeerkat · 07/01/2009 14:21

Clomid is often given to women with ovulation problems. Think your GP though is actually being cautious here in not prescribing clomid without first assessing your suitability for it - it is certainly not suitable for all PCOSers to take (it can affect homrone levels markedly, some PCOSers can become clomid resistant). I was not suitable to take it due to sky high LH levels (it encourages LH to be produced).

Also you should be monitored whilst on clomid for the above reasons - GPs do not have either the time and/or expertise to monitor properly. You should also have regular ultrasounds.

You should be referred to a gynae at a subfertility unit particularly as you have a PCOS diagnosis already (this condition does not go away as the cystic follicles associated with it always return).

Sorry - do not know of any medical alternatives to Metformin. Again this should be discussed with a gynae who can monitor you properly.

butterfly74 · 20/04/2009 21:18

Hi. I am new to this site but reassured to read about all you other PCOS sufferers out there and all the treatments available. I am already on a low GI diet so really happy to hear it helps when TTC which I've been doing without luck for a year. I actually feel like I had a proper cycle for the first time in ages last month and my blood test showed me to have ovulated. I am really hoping the stone and a half I've lost so far has helped. I am going to book to see the GP after reading all the posts about metformin.
So lovely to see so many positive stories. Congrats tyra1. Enjoy every minute of the pregnancy. Would love to hear how it's going and hope I can be in the same boat soon
