@Tinkerbell098 I believe a laparoscopy is even better than HSG x

lilrosemarie · 09/03/2022 13:34

@Hoping43 and @Tinkerbell098 I think laparoscopy is somewhat invasive 😬 as it goes through the abdomen, and I am really not looking forward to that. And when my husband googled it yesterday as I told him what my gp said, we was like … well, we can try a bit more before you do that and he immediately emailed and confirmed his SA on Monday. 😬 I guess getting SA is the easier part of this infertility journey.

Tinkerbell098 · 09/03/2022 13:42

@lilrosemarie yes I think it's more invasive, and I think they only suggest that if they find any blockages in the tubes so you can remove it then and there. So I think the standard process is to do HSG/Hycosy, and if they find anything, then go on to laparoscopy. That's what I thought anyway, could be wrong.

Hoping43 · 09/03/2022 13:42

@lilrosemarie yes I do agree that it is invasive but I think it’s the best way for them to examine everything in detail. Is there a reason for them suggesting this, do they suspect you have endometriosis or have you had any previous pregnancies which may have caused some damage to tubes or uterus etc?

Tinkerbell098 · 09/03/2022 13:43

@Hoping43 yea, no doubting that, but I wouldn't go for it unless they first find something wrong some other way (HSG for example).

Tinkerbell098 · 09/03/2022 13:45

@Hoping43 sorry I must have just been typing as you replied. I also think they only go for laparoscopy if they suspect something, so found it a bit strange that's all.

lilrosemarie · 09/03/2022 13:50

No. She said everything looks good on ultrasound.
I’ve never been pregnant before, she didn’t see any cysts or anything. I think this may be the procedure where I live (not in Uk). 😬 I do have a chance to go for HSG and pay for it myself, or I will check with my gp if I don’t succeed woth Clomid in the next couple of cycles.

Has any one of you been on Clomid before? @Tinkerbell098 @Hoping43

Tinkerbell098 · 09/03/2022 13:57

@lilrosemarie ah that explains it, must be different procedure. No, sorry I haven't been on Clomid as I ovulate regularly (so far anyway!).

Hoping43 · 09/03/2022 14:11

@lilrosemarie ah I see. I reckon that deffo explains it. Don’t think it’s standard on NHS unless there is a specific reason. Not been on clomid. I was prescribed letrozole with my second but got pregnant and didn’t end up taking it. Hoping they may go down that route again. They told me last time I may not always ovulate as my cycles vary 28-34 days so hoping they’ll try that first before we have to go down the expensive IVF route x

FlyOnTheWall89 · 09/03/2022 14:35

If you've not had a HSG and more importantly, your partners sperm tested, I would say a laparoscopy is a way off considering you usually have regular cycles. Have you had your progesterone tested to check for ovulation? Some people don't get obvious external EWCM, but if you check yourself internally, you may have it.

Just in general, I was listening to a podcast and the doctor was explaining the sperm testing threshold needs to much lower - it's a change in culture that should happen in the coming years with MFI being discussed more openly. It should be done even before the female is tested. There is so much that can be done to improve sperm and therefore assisted conception can be avoided.

FlyOnTheWall89 · 09/03/2022 14:35

@lilrosemarie arh just seen you're not UK based.

NatW2021 · 09/03/2022 20:40

@Tinkerbell098 - totally i hate this part of the TWW im 8/9dpo and just feeling fed up and emotional as i prepare for another cycle.

Hoping everything goes ok tomorrow xx

lilrosemarie · 10/03/2022 05:25

@FlyOnTheWall89 thanks for shedding some light on this. We’ve been trying to concieve for over a year, but I haven’t put much thought on procedures yet. I didn’t plan on going any soon as my partner hasn’t had his SA. I think he will go on Monday, though, so if we get good results, I will speak to my gp and ask about HSG before laparoscopy. 😬

Tinkerbell098 · 10/03/2022 09:57

@NatW2021 hope you won't have to prepare for another cycle. Stay positive! My BBT has finally shifted (takes about 4 days from positive OPK to see a temp rise), but OH wants to DTD tonight too incase O is late (or he just wants it haha!)

OH has had a blood test for testosterone for something unrelated and shows lower than reference levels, so we were researching what this could mean for us. But his SA showed that his sperm was good, although this was done 6 months ago, so not sure if things have changed since I hope not! But he was feeling a little deflated about it.

Feeling nervous about the appointment this evening and nervous to hear about my HSG results. I've got so many questions prepared for her.

NatW2021 · 10/03/2022 11:59

@Tinkerbell098 - i know trying not to be negative but cant help preparing for a BFN just so i don't have a melt down!

Its horrible waiting round isn't it for results - i had some blood this morning to check my thyroid after being on meds for 7 weeks - dying to know already! X

LucyAnne34 · 10/03/2022 16:15

@lilrosemarie my consultant wanted to do laparoscopy as he said it was the best thing to do to get an overall idea of what’s going on. More invasive but they can literally see everything so diagnostically better than HSG. However I didn’t have one as he said waiting lists for surgery would be massive due to covid so I should have HSG in the meantime. I wanted the laparoscopy! Deffo a good procedure to have if you want lots of answers :) good luck x

lilrosemarie · 10/03/2022 16:18

@LucyAnne34 I will go if my husband’s SA turns out great and we fail to concieve in the next couple of cycles of me taking Clomid.

NatW2021 · 10/03/2022 16:24

Hey everyone

Had my thyroid results back they have come down to 3.19 but still above what they should be.

Feeling so upset - i will probably have to pay to go private again as my GP is useless.

Feeling agitated, my manager in work is doing my head in! I feel like just just telling her and maybe she will give me a break but i know i will regret it! So keeping my mouth shut, i am on leave next week think i just need a break x

Decaffe · 10/03/2022 18:28
@Tinkerbell098 yes I think so. He refers to HSG as the gold standard and he writes don’t be fobbed off by lower quality tests using dye and ultrasound. I mean I suppose it’s only his opinion but I thought it was interesting x
I also read somewhere that with HyCoSy, you are more dependent on the skill of the radiographer to interpret the scan, whereas the HSG x-ray is more definitive.

Tinkerbell098 · 10/03/2022 18:34

I'm just back from my appointment. Turns out my left tube is blocked. Consultant said I either do laproscopy to figure out how bad the blockage is or go straight to IVF. She advised IVF due to my age as I'd be waiting around for surgery if not. So she has put a referral through to the NHS clinic and said I should hear back in 3 months, if not I can go private in the meantime. I've got mixed emotions. Part of me wanted to cry half way through the appointment and was very close to shedding tears, part of me is hopeful that there is a plan at least instead of trying every month and failing. I just need some time to process all this. Never thought I'd need to go through IVF. Just feeling very deflated.

BritInNZ · 10/03/2022 19:02

@Tinkerbell098 oh wow, I'm so sorry to hear that - and so unexpected!!! I'm sure it will take a few days to sink in... but in the meantime, I don't blame you if you're feel very sad and deflated. The bonus is you have a plan now - and you know you'll get there in the end. Thinking of you! ❤️

@Tinkerbell098 sorry to hear your news but I agree that it’s really good to finally have some answers have have a plan. How long have you been trying? Is the blocked tube the reason for it not happening? I guess it could still happen if your other tube isn’t blocked?

My AF just arrived about an hour ago. Usually it comes first thing in the morning so I was getting my hopes up but should have known I would be so lucky 😫. Onto cycle 12 x

NatW2021 · 10/03/2022 19:14

@Tinkerbell098 - so sorry to hear this, do they have any ideas of how this has happened? Is your right tube open?

Sometimes it is difficult to hear the facts but as you said answers can be liberating. Xx

Tinkerbell098 · 10/03/2022 19:55

@BritInNZ @Hoping43 @NatW2021 thanks for your thoughts. Just having a nice bath to help me digest all this. I never thought I’d have to go through this and feeling shit that it has come to this. Technically yes my right tube is ok and should have worked but this is our 15th cycle so there’s probably something else wrong also that I’m not diagnosed with. No they have no clue how it could have happened. She asked if I’ve had previous surgery and I haven’t so 🤷‍♀️ It’s just very unfortunate x

FlyOnTheWall89 · 10/03/2022 20:15

Oh so sorry @Tinkerbell098 - you must feel pretty overwhelmed rn. I know it will take a bit to sink in, but having been told this too, I think you might find it gets better the more you get your head around it. It's pretty black and white... one is a shortish turnaround, the other is long and more unknown and as you say, you've already been going for many months so I imagine you're getting pretty emotionally drained by it all. It is really tough.

I've found the process so far very quick and straightforward. I have my first real IVF app tomorrow after being referred end of Jan and speaking with the gynea from the fertility clinic in between - all funding has already come through. Having a plan has settled me.

Thinking of you. Relax and enjoy your bath. X
