Ok so I have been TTC for nearly 2 years. Nothing has happened at all. No chemical pregnancy nothing. I’ve been going months without periods and was diagnosed with PCOS. Last month my doctor recommended I try to take metformin. Refused to start fertility meds until I lost 5kg. I took the metformin for a week (just couldn’t handle it) and then about 2-3 weeks later I ovulated for the first time in about 3-4 months.

Then roughly 13 days later I started bleeding. Sad that I wasn’t pregnant but really happy I finally managed to have a period. It was pretty heavy (quite common for me) however it just abruptly stopped within 5-6 days. Usual periods for me can last nearly 2 weeks!!

Any to cut a long story short. I have been feeling “off” since I stopped my period 2 days ago. My boobs feel really heavy and tingly. Now I thought to try an ovulation stick. Just to see. It was very positive. Too positive for someone who just finished their period.

I then thought on a whim to take a pregnancy test. Internet cheapies. They are positive!! Wtf?! Now my mind is everywhere. Did I miscarry. Is this an ectopic? My emotions are just all over the place. Please can someone just give me some advice.

Well those are definitely positive aren’t they!! Confirming for me that you ARE pregnant. Definitely mention the bleeding to your doctor and maybe see if you can get a scan if you’re worried?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 02/04/2021 20:26

Given your complications, I'd hope the GP would act and would do bloods a few days apart. This will help distinguish if the bleeding was a MC (hcg will drop, though it doesnt sound like it was this), a pregnancy (hcg rises), an ectopic (hcg sharply rises, again doesnt sound like it op).

Scan at present is pointless - you cannot see anything definitive on a scan until about 6 weeks.

Overall, I would guess you are pregnant - congratulations!

Hey @Mamathebest I was in a similar situation and also bled heavily before getting a positive test. As it was my first pregnancy and my GP's are a complete waste of time, I called 111 and told them about the bleeding and they sent me straight to our local early pregnancy unit (I didn't even know these existed at the time, hence the call to 111). I then had blood tests every 2 days to check my HCG levels were rising and once they reached the minimum required to be able to have a scan (I think it's 1000?) they scanned me to check the pregnancy was viable. I think I was around 6.5 weeks once I eventually had the scan, which confirmed everything was fine and I'm happy to report I now have an almost 1 year old.

You are right that the bleeding could be a sign of an etopic pregnancy, and this is why I was sent to the EPU to check this out, but it also could be something completely normal like implantation bleeding. To be on the safe side, I would contact your local EPU/GP/111 asap and get some advice.

Wishing you all the best and a happy and healthy pregnancy Smile

How are you getting on OP?
Hoping everything is ok for you ❤️

Sexnotgender · 04/04/2021 06:48

Can you phone the EPU and try and be seen given your circumstances?

Mamathebest · 04/04/2021 07:56

Hi! Tests are still very much positive. As the GPs are closed I’ve been waiting around anxiously. 111 states that I would need a referral to EPU but only my GP can do this? However I’ve realised that the hospital I’m under for fertility support has a self referral option for EPU. Phone lines open later so I’m going to give them a ring and see what they can do. There’s been no further bleeding/spotting but I’m still pretty anxious!
I’ve attached a FRP that I did 2 days ago.

This can’t be possible can it??

I’m not sure if that worked

That’s a very positive test!

Babycakes39 · 04/04/2021 09:29

That's a nice strong line! Mine look like that and I'm 5 weeks pregnant! Xx

Mamathebest · 04/04/2021 10:55

I was so certain it was a period and was waiting to my next cycle to begin. Completely discounted this month so the shock of it hasn’t really settled Grin. I really hope it works out! I’m just waiting for a call back now. Will update you all once I know more. I’m probably driving myself crazy with testing. Should I just stop now?

Sexnotgender · 04/04/2021 11:56

Yes! Stop testing. A line is a line, especially when it’s nice and strong like that one. Wait to see what EPU/GP says.

Chica1990 · 04/04/2021 12:36

Are you still bleeding @Mamathebest ?

Mamathebest · 04/04/2021 12:44

@Chica1990

So I’ve spoke to EPAU. They stated that there isn’t really much that can be done on their end. It could be several issues one of which could be heavy implantation bleeding. They advised that I go A&E. however I don’t feel like that would be helpful as I am not currently bleeding? I have some dull aches that come and go but nothing really painful. And some awful breast pain. They stated that any pain should be checked out. They did say it would be too early to scan but A&E can complete a referral and I can do repeat bloods every 2 days to monitor.

Still have no clue Blush
I don’t really want to spend 8 hours plus in A&E for a blood test

Congratulations @Mamathebest! That's brilliant news! Hope everything progresses as it should, no reason that it wouldn't!

May I be cheeky and ask what dose of metformin you were on before you stopped taking it? I have PCOS and will be starting that soon.

Mamathebest · 04/04/2021 17:10

Thank you @murmurlade
Would love to help so ask away! So I was put on 500mg. I didn’t realise that I was supposed to “ease into it” and took a 1000mg a day. So one tablet in the morning and one at night. I honestly don’t know if this was a big coincidence as I only took it for 7 days. But I did notice that ever since, I had no hormonal acne and my facial hair growth slowed down.

Traditionally your meant to start upping the dosage slowly. So you take one table for one week. Then increase to two.

I did also begin to start adjusting my diet so I’m sure that might have helped a bit. How long have you been TTC?

That's great to hear, something obviously did the trick! I've only been trying about 7/8 months but haven't ovulated in that time so really interested to hear that it kickstarted ovulation! (Even a period would be good at this point 😂)

I had read somewhere that some women with PCOS are advised to continue taking metformin for the first part of pregnancy, but that's not me suggesting what you should do, obviously!!! If I were you I would be thinking 'right, now I'll keep everything exactly the same and see how I get on!' 😄

You must be really excited. Have you told your OH?

murmurlade · 04/04/2021 17:54

Cautiously excited I mean. But you should allow yourself to be. Bodies are strange things xxx

LividLiving · 04/04/2021 18:57

I had an early two day “period” and a positive pregnancy test a couple of days later.

If I hadn’t have thought it was a period I’d have been so worried, but i took ibuprofen and paracetamol as usual.

Baby is snoring next to me.

MsK89 · 05/04/2021 21:28

Hey @Mamathebest please keep updates on here as I am going through a bit of similar situation and very confused right now!

On 27th March I thought my period started and I had a week of bleeding. So last night I thought it was a good time to start tracking ovulation again. I was shocked when instantly it showed a blaring peak! On the off chance I did a pregnancy test and it came back positive...

I called EPU this morning and they’ve told me to get referred tomorrow by my GP so they can do my bloods every 48 hours.

I’m soooo bloody nervous! Had a chemical pregnancy at the end of feb and had a miscarriage at 9 weeks last year.

This can’t be possible can it??
spidermomma · 05/04/2021 21:34

@Mamathebest just want to say congratulations!!!! I bled with my first for a while sn they said it was the baby attaching itself inside x

bubblebath62636 · 05/04/2021 21:38

Congratulations!

Please keep us updated and good luck

Mamathebest · 06/04/2021 11:16

@murmurlade
Ha I felt the same way when I started bleeding this month. I thought hey at least I ovulated!! Keep going and give the metformin a go. Our bodies are crazy. With my first it was no effort even with PCOS and the second has taken what feels like ages.

I’m in two minds about starting metformin so I’m waiting to speak to the EPAU.
