Natural ways to conceive multiples?

LillyMary90 · 16/03/2021 20:49

I know it’s a long shot and to be honest i will be happy and so lucky to conceive either way but does anyone have any experience/ideas/thoughts on natural ways to increase the chance of conceiving multiples?

Eat lots of yam...
I’ve heard that the phytoestrogens in yam may account for the high incidence of twin births in Yoruba women.

TwinMum89 · 16/03/2021 20:53

It might be a complete coincidence but I had acupuncture twice being finishing my period and ovulating. I fell pregnant with boy/girl twins. It was my fifth cycle of trying and I hadn’t had acupuncture before that.

Have a strong family incidence of multiples but I really think that that is it 🤷‍♀️ Not what you wanted to hear I’m sure. Why would you be wanting to deliberately do that anyway??

LillyMary90 · 16/03/2021 20:55

Oh really! I’ve never heard that about the Yoruba tribe before, very interesting will definitely research thank you! X

Why on earth would you want to? I see a set of twins and the mere thought of having two babies/toddlers at once makes me hyperventilate. There’s a set of triplets at my DCs’ school. I practically have to cross the road when I see them so I don’t fall sobbing into their mother’s arms going, ‘How? HOW HAVE YOU COPED?’

Deanefan · 16/03/2021 20:55

Any more likely as the female partner gets older.

BigSkyLife · 16/03/2021 20:56

Has to be white yam though.

HamFisted · 16/03/2021 20:59

Most of it is beyond your control (ethnicity, family history etc), but there's also:

  • be breastfeeding at the time you conceive
(I was with my second, still had a single though)
  • be older when you conceive (multiple eggs are released towards the start of menopause)
  • Have just come off hormonal contraception (this was true for me with my first and second. Still had singles both times thank God)

Basically I have the higher income between my husband and I, we both want 3 children and realistically I can’t afford to have multiple or sporadic years off on maternity having children (as much as I’d love to) I thought a quicker way to do this was to have multiples, crazy I know!

You've not had any yet. You may well change your mind about the number of kids once you've actually got one or two.

Also, split the parental leave so that your husband does at least half of it.

Oh I totally understand! It takes some strength to raise one let alone multiples!!

Why would you choose to have multiples when the chances of complications are higher?

LillyMary90 · 16/03/2021 21:03

I do have one.

Do you know how much childcare costs for twins? Are you aware of the pregnancy and birth risks? You get hardly any decent sleep with multiples... no napping when the baby naps, broken nights for ages, sometimes waking to feed every hour.

But if you like: Yams. Conceiving whilst breastfeeding. Conceiving as a teen or in your 40s.

Ah, the ‘instant family’ delusion of multiples, when you’ve not even had one yet. And thinking you know how many children you want when you’ve not even had one yet.

No, OP. Nonononononono. Avoid the yams. Especially the white ones.

Greenmarmalade · 16/03/2021 21:05

@ElphabaTheGreen I know exactly how you feel! Massive respect for triplet + parents. Must be so insanely tough.

ElphabaTheGreen · 16/03/2021 21:06

X-post - you have one and you still want twins??

Insanity. I can only assume you got a sleeper.

NoGoodPunsLeft · 16/03/2021 21:08

I know 4 sets of twins:

Random (second pregnancy, was frankly pissed off at getting 2 for 1 Grin
Family history
Older mum x2

Haha @ElphabaTheGreen that is usually my reaction! 😂😂 I genuinely cannot cope with the thought of carrying and birthing multiples. I admire from afar. A friend of mine had triplets and it literally changed her life completely. Work, finances etc everything has to be reconsidered. But she's amazing at it. I live in awe of her 👏

Good luck to OP though ❤️

MangoSeason · 16/03/2021 21:10

I was terrified of twins when TTC my third. The risk factors for me were

  1. Family history of fraternal twins
  2. Older Mum
  3. Breastfeeding while TTC
4 Tall women are more likely to have twins and I am 6 foot tall

I was so relieved to see my singleton at the scan.

Trumplosttheelection · 16/03/2021 21:11

Just take 6 weeks mat leave and get back to work. It's how they do it in the US. Long mat leave is not obligatory and you cannot eat your way to twins.
