Coming off the pill

I’m due to get married in October this year. I’m 29, me & my partner would like to start trying for a baby after our wedding. I was thinking of coming the pill in August, to give my body time to get back to a normal cycle.
Is it also true for me to start taking folic acid up to 3 months before we start trying?
Thanks

Yes take folic acid

lovelock28 · 09/02/2021 16:03

Everyone is different but sometimes it can take a while for your body to get back to normal after the pill. But definitely start taking supplements at least 3 months before to help with the transition and you'll be good. What pill are you on out of curiosity?

KvTc · 09/02/2021 16:41

The pill I’m on is Rigevidon.

Hey, I would recommend coming off the pill early, like you say to give time to get back to a normal cycle.

My husband and I got married in December and I came off the pill (microgynon) in January so we could start TTC. I didn’t even think about time for my cycle to get back to normal - I was more concerned with avoiding AF on our wedding day! Anyway now I’m finding it tricky because I have no idea if and when I’ll ovulate and then when AF would be due. If you like to plan I would definitely give your cycle time to get back to normal.

I also started taking folic acid 3 months before as recommended.

TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/02/2021 17:14

Yeah id definitely advise this! It took 6 months for my cycles to come back after rigevidon! Im an extreme case, but possible

lovelock28 · 09/02/2021 17:15

@KvTc this is the same pill I'm on

@Aquarius93 have you managed to get your AF at all?

lovelock28 · 09/02/2021 17:16

@TheDaydreamBelievers did your cycles become regular after 6 months?

Hopingformydb · 09/02/2021 17:18

I was on rigevedon stopped in December still not ovulated and I'm due my 2nd AF on Monday I would stop it earlier if I was you I wish I had done it earlier. If you don't mind waiting though stop after you get married

Aquarius93 · 09/02/2021 17:20

@lovelock28 not yet but it’s early days for me! I only stopped taking the pill on 16th January

SendMeHome · 09/02/2021 17:21

Yeah, I’d come off it early too. I didn’t, and it’s been four months now with no luck TTC.

KvTc · 09/02/2021 17:53

Sorry to sound dumb but what is AF?

OP posts:
Hopingformydb · 09/02/2021 17:58

AF = Aunt flow - period just a nick name on mums net x

spagino21 · 09/02/2021 18:05

I stopped taking my pill (microgynon) on 10th Jan and ovulated on 1st Feb which was confirmed by ovulation test strips and by measuring my temps so it is possible for your cycle to return straight away! I also started taking TTC supplements in Jan so that may have helped - good luck!

RedPandaMama · 09/02/2021 18:09

I came off the pill on 4th Jan (I was on Cerazette for a year but was on Rigevidon before that) and it took me 5 weeks to get my first period. For some people it comes straight away. One of my friends took 8 months to get back into a proper cycle.

I came off for different reasons, not trying to get pregnant, but I would definitely give yourself 3ish months to get your cycle sorted.

I'm using natural cycles now, it's an app and I really recommend it. You can use it as natural contraception and then use to to TTC when the time comes. I love it so far.

moomalade89 · 09/02/2021 18:35

Personally I do advise coming off at least 3 months early. After my withdrawal bleed it took 3 months for my period to come back, and now I'm heading for 40 days without my second period. And I don't think I ovulated. I really thought I would be off and away by now! Not pregnant, but in with a shot! I liked getting set up on the app and buying OPKs and everything so you might enjoy doing that while you let your cycle come back and regulate. Just nothing really for me to input...! Good luck :)

TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/02/2021 22:07

@lovelock28 no, unfortunately things have continued to be a mess:
Came off pill
6mo later (CD141) first AF
Cycle 2 CD33 ovulated and conceived
Unfortunately miscarried at 11 weeks pregnant
2 weeks wait for surgery
9 week wait for first AF after misscarriage
Currently CD19 of first cycle after miscarriage without ovulation

lovelock28 · 09/02/2021 22:13

@TheDaydreamBelievers I'm so so sorry to hear about your MC. Praying you get a BFP soon ThanksThanksThanks
It's so annoying doctors don't tell you it could mess up your cycle before you go on it. If I had known I probably wouldn't have gone on it, hindsight is a wonderful thing. I'm planning to come off next year when I'm 28 which will make it 8 years of taking rigevidon without a break. How old are you if you don't mind me asking and were you on the pill for as long as I was?

TheDaydreamBelievers · 09/02/2021 22:19

@lovelock28 I'm 31 and was on the pill for 12 years! (Rigevidon and microgynon before it - the same drug, both work by suppressing ovulation).

Some people I know have regulated v fast but yes they should definitely tell you!

emilyylouise · 10/02/2021 08:07

Hey!
I was on the pill lucette. Came off beginning of November and my periods have been very irregular, that irregular that I've just found out I'm pregnant! I was waiting around for AF to show up 🙈

moomalade89 · 10/02/2021 10:33

@emilyylouise congratulations!!! 🎉

emilyylouise · 10/02/2021 12:22

@moomalade89
Thank you ❤️

lovelock28 · 10/02/2021 17:46

@emilyylouise congratulations that's lovely news Thanks were you on that particular pill for long?

Loops01 · 10/02/2021 17:53

I came off the pill over a year before TTC and we are 7 months in with no luck! However the last 3 months my cycle has been more 'normal'. I have heard of people coming off and getting pregnant quickly and vice versa. I would track your cycle as much as possible using ovulation test kits too. My cycle before the pill used to he every 28 days and when I came off the pill. It went from 30 days to 40 days. Like I said though it's only recently started being more normal. I was on the pill (well microgynon then the pop) for about 11 years with the occasional break. Good luck with trying. I would say try sooner and do not delay. I regret waiting.

emilyylouise · 10/02/2021 19:10

@lovelock28 I have been on some sort of contraceptive pill around 8 years!

MustBeTime · 10/02/2021 19:18

I'd say allow at least 3 months although everything appeared to kick in for me within 5 weeks. I wish I had come off earlier and used condoms so I could track my cycle for longer.
