Am I having a missed miscarriage?

Hi ladies, I had a faint BFP 2 days before my AF came, assumed it was an indent/evap as period had come. This was 7 days ago and on day 2 of period I had EXTREME cramping to the point I was crying in bed. Sorry TMI but the blood was sooo dark almost black. My periods usually last 5 days MAX and I'm on day 7 now and still bleeding heavily which has had like small black clots in. No large clots from what I've seen. Does this sound like im having a MMC? My period pains have never ever been as bad as they were that night. I would just like to know if this is a MMC or weird period. Do you think if I tested it would show positive if it was indeed a MMC? Thanks ladies x

Sorry to hear OP.

But this isn’t what a missed miscarriage means- it’s more likely you’re having a chemical.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 23/01/2021 16:10

A missed miscarriage is when your body stops being pregnant but doesn’t recognise that and hangs onto it.

Garman · 23/01/2021 16:49

This sounds like a chemical pregnancy as mentioned by the other poster, not a missed miscarriage, because your body hasn't missed it at all.

GreenSlide · 23/01/2021 17:16

Chemical pregnancies aren't usually any more painful than usual periods - if you get the same next month maybe see your GP. But it does sound like a period problem not a pregnancy problem Thanks

TheDaydreamBelievers · 23/01/2021 17:37

Chemical pregnancy = v early miscarriage. Can result in what seems to be a normal period but just a bit late, or a slightly heavier period.

Missed misscarriage= baby died but your body didnt notice so continued to hold on to the pregnancy and increase pregnancy hormones. Also called silent misscarriage because there are NO symptoms of it- no bleeding, clots, cramping. Often discovered at the 12 week scan.

So its possible it was a chemical or its possible you've just had a super heavy evil period. Stress, diet, exercise etc. All impact on your periodw

Chica1990 · 23/01/2021 18:13

Are you still getting positive pregnancy tests even after all this bleeding? I had positive pregnancy tests after bleeding for weeks and unfortunately was having an ectopic pregnancy.

I hope this isn’t the case for you but if the tests are positive please try get referred to your EPU so they can do two blood tests 48 hours apart to check your hcg levels

Thanks for all replies, and apologies for my ignorance. Still getting my head round all these different scenarios/meanings. Its now day 8 and I'm still bleeding very dark blood. I was thinking if it carries on then tomorrow I'll perhaps grab a test to see if it shows anything and would confirm it's most likely a chemical. I've attached a picture of my test that was before AF came, I was convinced it was positive! Thanks for the advice ladies x

@Leo090813 I think the MN website doesnt let you post photos unless youve been a user for a few days or so.

Wishing you the best of luck x

So I'm on day 10 of bleeding and got a blazing positive today. Went to a&e, HCG level is low- 105. He said maybe you weren't pregnant at all or you're too early hence the low levels. What do you think? If I was miscarrying wouldn't my line be faint by now? I don't know what to think x

I think you need a scan, do you have a local early pregnancy unit? Sometimes you can ring up and self refer.

Funkypickle · 26/01/2021 20:45

Please fight for a scan. I don't want to scare you but it maybe an ectopic pregnancy as a pp has mentioned or possible mc. Hopefully they will be monitoring you and you you will have a repeat blood draw. Really Hope you're OK? Really sorry you are going through this

They wouldn't scan me as according to my last proper period I'm only 5w 3 days so they want me to wait a week of not knowing if I'm pregnant or not. Surely I must have been at some point if I've tested positive on 3 tests and have 105 hcg? I don't know what to think :(

Is it correct they won't scan until 6 weeks pregnant? They were adamant they wouldn't scan me. I just want to know Sad

Well absolutely, don’t let them say you weren’t pregnant when there’s obviously evidence to the contrary. EPU will see you from six weeks. did the ductile not worry about possible eptopic or do a pregnancy test there? ? That’s really surprising. But I would keep an eye on those lines. Even with a chemical, sometimes they do show a positive for longer, and within a few days you’d expect to see a negative.

SmidgenofaPigeon · 26/01/2021 20:50

*did the doctor not worry
It’s really hard to get a san prior to six weeks- at that stage it’s tough for them to see anything.

He tested with urine sample which was faint positive. I guess they're less sensitive than the FRER. He said maybe this is just your period and you were never even pregnant. I mentioned ectopic and he said "well it's definitely not a ruptured ectopic as u would be in lots of pain" which doesn't really cover the scenario that it's an unruptured ectopic! I guess with the hospital test being faint it does look as if it's a MC. X

They won't scan until 6 weeks because they won't be able to see anything if earlier. I had a miscarriage and it took 2 weeks after i passed it to get a negative test. (About a week after I stopped bleeding)

Do you mind me asking how long you were bleeding for? I'm on day 10 as mentioned above and am just desperate for it to stop! X

It does I’m afraid. But I’m sorry he was so uncaring. I know medical professionals deal with this every day but sometimes a bit if sensitivity wouldn’t go amiss. I think unless you’re finding yourself in a lot of pain, just keep an eye and see if the lines fade. If not, when you hit six weeks self refer to the EPU or get your GP to do it.

happylittlechick · 26/01/2021 20:55

Probably about 10days. I was 7 weeks.

Thanks. I plan to test at the weekend if I can wait that long and I'll use FRER again to compare lines. Thanks for your replies x

For most EPUs you need to be referred to a gp for the first appt. Maybe give your gp a call tomorrow and ask for an hcg to continue to monitor your levels.

I have had 2 ectopics with the first one being misdiagnosed as a mc. (also had 2 mc) I had bleeding from around 6 weeks and a dull ache in my hip. My hcg lvls were very low but stayed very low for ages.

With a chemical pregnancy, mc or ectopic you hcg levels can take awhile to bottom out. And some pregnancy tests will detect hcg at 6mlU

Chica1990 · 27/01/2021 07:28

‘Maybe you weren’t pregnant at all’ - what a thing to say! To be honest I don’t think a lot of gps know much about gynaecology issues. I was lucky with my gp she thought something was weird on my pregnancy test and referred me to the epu. They scanned me when they thought I was 4 weeks (I was actually around 8) and did blood tests, even if you can’t get a scan I would push for another blood test to compare levels, stagnant levels over a 48 hour period is an indicator of ectopic. Where abouts in the country are you?

Sorry you’re going through this and of course it could unfortunately be on the way to a miscarriage but the bleeding is worrying and it’s really worth making sure nothing bad is going on. Like you said the silly doctor pointed out it’s not a ruptured ectopic - but it’s better to find out when it’s unruptured!!
