@candycrush2298
You are going to need a referral from your GP. I'll give you an example of what I meant:

If you need to get an Ultrasound done, your GP can directly do it, you don't need to wait to go to an fertility clinic whereas with a HSG scan your GP can't directly do it, only a specialist can get it done on the NHS.

If you do it privately that changes things as the NHS isn't paying for it, You do need a referral letter from your GP. I think it's so that your GP has a medical record of what you're getting done.

Elakiya · 22/09/2020 09:55

@candycrush2298 Actually not too sure about the GP referral for private. The only reason I needed a referral was because of my insurance whereas if you're paying... I am not sure?

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 09:59

@Kaybobx yeah my confusion was because @Elakiya said a GP cannot refer you to get an HSG done NHS. Which is why I was so confused but she has explained below.

@Elakiya thanks for clarifying. So my ultrasound that is being done at the hospital in the X-ray department he can refer but and HSG which is done in the X-ray department he cannot lol makes no sense whatsoever.
What I mean is I comprehend what you're telling me I just dont get the NHS logic behind it.

After the ultrasound if they find no abnormalities I will ask to be referred for an HSG and then contact Nuffield with the letter.

@Elakiya who knows maybe different practices require different things. On the link @Kaybobx shared the NHS makes it seem like its pretty common for private practices to request letters of referral from your GP so it doesnt seem strange to me. Was just confused after our chat yesterday.

@candycrush2298 I'm so confused haha!!

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:05

@Kaybobx lol maybe you missed mine and @Elakiya chat yesterday. Yesterday I said after the scan if nothing is found I am going to twist my GPs arm to get me an HSG you know since he is so easy to convince and all that lol and then @Elakiya came back and said a GP cannot refer to you get an HSG as per her gynae so yeah now you can see my confusion from the email.

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 10:06

@candycrush2298 I think its due to two reason 1) cost - of an ultrasound is about £100 I think and HSG scans where I am are £600.

and the second reason I think is because GP's have a broad knowledge of everything but not an in depth knowledge. Just to give you an idea of what I mean. There are a few GP's in the surgery I go to (one is amazing, the rest I tend to not go to anymore hahaha) but one of the GP's requested bloodwork to be done for my PCOS. I took it to the NHS specialist and he laughed and went these are useless to me because they haven't been done on the right dates of your cycle so they can't really have GP's requesting specialist scans because they'll just request it for everyone and end up wasting NHS money. That's my theory anyway lol

Kaybobx · 22/09/2020 10:08

@candycrush2298 after you've had your scan and hubby has had his SA that will be the next step that your GP will investigate but its such a long process.
If you then say to your GP well i dont want to wait he can refer you but you'll still have to pay anyway.

As you are paying to go private you dont need a GP referral. We have physios in our gym, GPs refer people from the hospital but if someone in the gym had a bad back for instance, they can just go and pay to be seen.

I hope that makes sense.

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:09

@Elakiya lol who knows what the reasoning is either way if nothing comes of the US I will ask for a referral letter to do an HSG.

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 10:11

@candycrush2298 Another reason I think a GP can get ultrasounds done but not HSG is because HSG is specific to fertility, whereas ultrasounds are used for other things, like checking ovarian cancer, polyps, fibroids which aren't specialist fertility stuff... I think.... all this talk makes me wish I was doctor so I can fast track my way through the process :P

Elakiya · 22/09/2020 10:12

@candycrush2298 How long are results? My Ultrasound results came in 2 weeks?

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:13

@Kaybobx yeah makes sense i think the GPs next step would be to refer to the fertility clinic thats what I have been told after hubbys SA we get referred to the clinic and the carry on with all fertility testing. But because I did the scan due to "pain" I was hoping to bend the rules further to get HSG done sooner which I have subsequently found out I cannot. Hence me saying I am going to ask him to refer me privately. Maybe the specialist that works for Nuffield in Glasgow only accepts referrals because he is the only one doing it so he doesn't want to get too busy. Every doctor is different and privately they can ask what they want lol.

OP posts:
candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:14

@Elakiya yeah that makes sense.
No idea how long the results will take I will ask at my scan probably about that long.

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 10:16

@candycrush2298 Email back and ask if a GP referral is required as you'll be funding the HSG scan yourself. He might have mistakenly thought you'll be making an insurance claim at some point?

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:17

@Elakiya I will ask

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 10:24

@candycrush2298 The people that look at you for pains in ovaries, uterus probably know a lot more about fertility issues then your GP. I'd complain it's still painful if they don't spot anything and get myself to a specialist and then drop in there "oh btw we've been trying to conceive for 18 months and haven't been successful do you think my pain has anything to do with this" hahaha :D

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:30

@Elakiya @Kaybobx Well that answers that question then doesnt it.

@Elakiya haha good idea!

@candycrush2298 hmm, they didn't mention that to me. Just gave me the form to fill in. Why is nothing ever simple?!

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 10:36

@Elakiya sounds like a good plan lol except mine is 28 months now... very sad when I say that out loud to myself ugh.

@Kaybobx who knows maybe different rules between England and Scotland. Or because you getting discount who the bloody hell knows 🤣🤣

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 12:02

@candycrush2298 Getting a referral from the GP is easy. They literally type it out and print you a copy so maybe get it sorted now ready for whenever you'll use it.

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 13:36

@Elakiya thanks will wait to see my results and hubbys results of SA. Dont want to fork out all the money if they find something else wrong with him or me.

Sounds stupid to fork out nearly £500 just to get some f###n clomid.

OP posts:
Elakiya · 22/09/2020 14:01

@candycrush2298 oh no I don't mean do the test now, I mean speak to your GP and get the referral ready. Usually where I am the GP will type the letter out in front of you, print it and give it to you. But due to Covid, and not being able to see them in person that might take longer so I'd say it's best to request now in the hope they'll post it out to you soon.

I'm going to have to do the same thing as I won't be able to get an appointment with my GP face to face either.

candycrush2298 · 22/09/2020 14:14

@Elakiya just called them the doctor I wanted to see (the easy to convince doc) is on holiday for 3 weeks haha so I will be waiting now anyway. I know I could have gone with a different doc but hey ho I am waiting on him now.

Let us know how you get on with your doc.
