Advice needed after miscarriage

I had a miscarriage on Monday and passed the baby fully (I've had a scan and there's nothing left). Due to having a blood test on Sunday which showed a high hormone level (I think this was 18,000) and only a small amount of brown bleeding at this time, there has been concern I may still have an ectopic pregnancy. Even though I know what I saw.

I think my reading went down to 10,000 Monday afternoon and today it's 2,000 so all going the right way hormone wise. I'm bleeding still but just a normal period amount. As soon as I passed the baby on Monday, the cramping and pain stopped.

My question is with regards to trying again. I was told to wait 3 weeks and take a test. If it's negative, no further action is required but if it's positive I need to let the doctor know.

Seeing as my levels are dropping quickly, realistically how quickly could I test and see a negative? We'd really like to try again while my fertility is higher after the miscarriage and this is how we were lucky to conceive my son after my first miscarriage. The trouble is my DH is travelling with work for 4 months shortly so we don't have much time! Would you try now or wait until he's back? I'm 39 so time isn't on my side.

Hi @LifeBeginsNow

I had surgery for a mmc on 27/07 and got a negative on 05/08

We tried straight away and got our bfp. Not sure if this pregnancy is going the same way as the last one unfortunately, but we used the clear blue advanced digital opk’s and found I actually ovulated cd20 (if we take the day of the surgery as cd1) whereas usually I’m cd14.

So sorry you went through this, big hugs x

LifeBeginsNow · 09/09/2020 19:15

Thank you Sansa. I feel like a negative test would occur pretty quickly seeing as the hormone levels are dropping quickly.

Congratulations & I hope your pregnancy goes well. It's so hard to relax once you've experienced a miscarriage. I remember with my first pregnancy it was a total shock that it could even happen. Now it's like it's always in the back of my mind. Not the best way to live.

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. I've had 2 and both times I had a negative test within a week, although they were both early losses.

LifeBeginsNow · 04/10/2020 10:10

Continuing this thread... I waited for a negative test and this came fairly quickly as others suggested.

We've continued to try to conceive but obviously I no longer know when I'm ovulating. The last time I had sex was 25th September - when should I test?

I don't think I've got any symptoms this time and normally I seem to get sore breasts fairly quickly. I am tired (this is pretty standard though) and I've been more emotional and actually burst out crying several times (once was about an advert on tv).

I don't normally test lots. I take one on the day/ day after my period is due and that's it but who knows when that is this time! Any advice?

I’m so sorry you had to go through this. I would wait for 2 weeks after the last time you dtd to test.

LifeBeginsNow · 04/10/2020 11:37

Thank you meom. I wondered if that was best.

It takes over your life once you decide to ttc!

My cycle pretty much followed a normal pattern straight after the Mc I had so I'd work on the basis of expecting it at your normal dpo as usual but then if it is late and you get a bfn then it could just be that your not as lucky as for your body to go back to normal afterwards etc. I was shocked at how quick my body did go back to normal, I would say the first period I had after my Mc was very heavy though which I think can be quite common so maybe something to expect, good luck xx

LifeBeginsNow · 04/10/2020 18:48

I'll have to go back through my app and see when it should've been. My fitbit seems to keep telling me I'm due so its all a bit messed up.

Got my fingers crossed for you @LifeBeginsNow for your rainbow baby 🤞

gypsywater · 04/10/2020 18:59

I've just had a miscarriage and have been advised by the EPU to await one normal period before trying again.

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 20:06

So sorry for your loss ❤️

I had one on 4th august at 6+4 when I started bleeding. Scan on 7th confirmed everything was gone and my bloods had already gone down to 20!

I was told once I had stopped bleeding and had a negative test I was good to go. My advice would be to test every couple of days with FMU and as soon as you get negative test and you're not bleeding you're good to go as long as you feel up to it emotionally of course xx

If it gives you any hope at all, I ovulated approximately 4 weeks later confirmed with CBD and OPK and got my BFP again 2 weeks after that so no period in between miscarriage and BFP - I wish you all the luck and baby dust in the world ❤️

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 20:13

Oh I'm sorry I read the your original post and then commented without reading or even noticing the date 🙄

I think if you don't know when you ovulated it's hard to know when you're likely to get AF or a BFP... I'd give it 2 weeks from having sex like PP said but as per my previous post it took me 4 weeks to ovulate so it will vary x

@gypsywater you don't have to wait for your period to come they say that so it's easier to date you but if you're not going to wait for period like I didn't then make sure you OPK so you know when you ovulate for dating purposes (I'm approximately 6+5 worked out from my ov date) xx

gypsywater · 04/10/2020 20:17

@Bl0ndi3 Wow, a BFP again so quick, amazing! Did you start doing OPKs as soon as you got the BFN after the MC then? The EPU said to wait until a period to give the body more recovery time but they said it's only their advice and many women choose not to wait :) Did you conceive very quickly the last time too? It took me 8 months so I cant imagine I will get another BFP very quickly.

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 20:30

@gypsywater so sorry for your loss btw ❤️

It had taken us 8 months of semi trying to get first BFP.

I started using OPKs maybe as though I normally would if the miscarriage bleed was my period and start of bleeding was CD1 so waited until cd8 I think and then started testing but it wasn't until like cd29 I ovulated so didn't test every day in the end because i got fed up haha!

I got my BFN really quick because my levels were so low, take your time and just get some cheap OPKs and test once a day til you start getting a stronger line and then go to twice a day? X

gypsywater · 04/10/2020 21:26

@Bl0ndi3 Thank you Smile The actual MC happened last Weds (was 10+4 by that point) so hopefully will get a BFN soon. It happened naturally thank god so not recovering from any surgery or anything. Still bleeding now and they said to expect about 10 days more from the scan on Fri. EPU told me to do a preg test after 3 weeks but will prob do one in 10 days to see where I am at. I use CB OPKs so will hold off a bit after that as not to spend a fortune Grin
How are you feeling about this pregnancy? Will you be having an early scan or holding out until the 12 week NHS one? Mine was a MMC but I'm still going to try to just hold out until 12 weeks next time

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 21:36

@gypsywater I used CBD OPK too and swear by it used both cycles I got BFP ❤️ my advice on that is to wait to use it and use cheapies first otherwise you'll waste a lot of the CBD sticks and they're not cheap haha! I ended up with so many flashing smileys this cycle because I didn't wait haha luckily a friend posted me hers that she hadn't used!

I'm 6+5 today and I started bleeding at 6+4 so I'm officially further along than I was before. 🥰🥰🥰 mine was only early but still heartbreaking and I do feel lucky that it happened naturally x

Got a scan on Saturday at 7+3 so looking forward to/terrified for that! I felt like i needed it just so that I know this pregnancy has started off on the right foot. Everything has seemed so much more positive this time around I got much better line progression this time looking back at my tests and the CBD weeks tests didn't progress past 1-2 weeks the first BFP and they've progressed like clockwork this one. So basically it's so far so good but never really out of the woods are you so it's nervy but I'm feeling positive xx

gypsywater · 04/10/2020 21:43

@Bl0ndi3 All the best for your scan at the weekend! Can definitely see why you want to check it's got off to a good start. Sounds promising though. Can you recommend a brand of cheap OPKs to use? I swear by the CB ones too - got pregnant the second cycle we ever used them after just trying to guess fertile windows with apps before that!

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 21:47

I have used the onestep ones and then also the ones you can get from Poundland too 😂 I see a lot of people using the easy@home ones too I think they're all pretty much the same though xx

You can get the one step ones on eBay for cheap and loads of them! X

Thanks lovely I'm hoping for a nice strong heartbeat ❤️

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 21:48

It's just good to use them when you don't know when you might ovulate save you wasting money on loads of CBD ones xx

gypsywater · 04/10/2020 21:49

Thanks! Will order some of those. Hopefully I will see you again on some pregnancy threads soon! Best of luck for the weekend with scan X

Bl0ndi3 · 04/10/2020 21:50

Aww I really hope so lovely ❤️❤️❤️ @gypsywater

LifeBeginsNow · 05/10/2020 20:39

Thanks Juno and others for your positive thoughts.

So sorry for those going through the same thing.

I'll test later this week and see what happens...

LifeBeginsNow · 09/10/2020 07:02

Just a little update... today is 2 weeks since I last had sex so I've tested first thing and I'm pregnant!

I can't believe it. I had to get the little instruction manual out again to check what the reading meant (it was a positive shape so pretty obvious).

I hope this one sticks. I'm on my own for months so going through anything bad will be very tough. I'm going to try and keep positive thoughts though (if I can) as the constant worrying just ruins a magical time.

No symptoms as yet except tiredness but that's always an issue as I don't sleep.

Thank you for the support all. I'm not sure how my midwife will react when I tell her I didn't wait for a period and can't date this one.

Meomeomeo · 09/10/2020 07:38

Congratulations. So happy for you.

Cafeaulait27 · 09/10/2020 07:40

@LifeBeginsNow Congratulations! Just had a little read of this thread and so pleased for you. I hope this one sticks for you.

Is it really true that you’re more fertile after a mc?

I’m sadly going through the mc of my first pregnancy, I’m 9 weeks but the baby died at 6 weeks, just after seeing a heartbeat which is very sad. I’m grieving and traumatised but want to try again. Unfortunately although I’m bleeding the baby is still in there, I have to wait 10 days for a rescan. I feel like I’m not going to pass it and going to need an op ☹️

Good luck - your thread is giving me hope xx
