TTC after Mirena removal

Hi everyone,

I'm getting my Mirena coil out on Friday hopefully, although the strings are missing so it might be a difficult procedure and chance I'll have to go to a specialist clinic which isn't even open due to Covid!

I'm due to get married at the end of December but with everything being so uncertain we thought we'd start the process of TTC now.

I'm 33 and have endometriosis, although had laparoscopy two years ago to remove endo tissue do hoping not to encounter any issues.

My GP has said not to start testing for when I'm ovulating as it will just make me more anxious but I'm literally going to have no clue when anything might happen.

Anybody else experienced anything similar?
We're keeping ours plans quiet from friends and family for now so be great to be able to share thoughts and worries with people ☺️

Look forward to chatting to you all soon xx

@Tabbycat92 that's your withdrawal bleed. I had mine on Monday, so two days after removal. I started tracking but I've only seen the faintness line on my OPKs. I'm so impatient and it's only been a week! I'm so eager to know if my body will ovulate!

I had my mirena out after it had been in for 4.5yrs to TTC. I struggled with the thickness of my endometrial layer and didn’t have a period for more than four months. Had a scan around three months in and it turned out that I was ovulating but the thickness needed time to increase, apparently very common with women who’ve had mirenas in. GP told me anecdotally that some women who have this issue find success with acupuncture and Chinese medicine, so I booked myself in for a consultation after six months TTC- two of those with periods. Had four weeks of Accupuncture and a course of Chinese herbs recommended to increase my endometrial layer and got pregnant on month six of TTC.

Tabbycat92 · 11/07/2020 17:53

@butterfly5291 of course it is, silly me. Only ever come off of birth control once before.
Started tracking LH levels anyway, but still low at the moment

butterfly5291 · 11/07/2020 17:59

Yeah absolutely start tracking....I've heard some people ovulate a few days after removal....my lines still pretty faint xx

Tabbycat92 · 13/07/2020 14:21

@butterfly5291 I really hope so, I've heard of some people that take 4years! I seriously hope that's not me!

Amy259 · 14/07/2020 22:02

Hi all, I hope you don’t mind me jumping on your thread!

Had my Mirena out on 11/06 and still waiting (5 weeks later) for my first period since. Had a bleed immediately after for 4 days but I assumed that was trauma rather than hormonal, as it was very light and I had to have my coil removed in the hosp (cervical dilation to retrieve it was not pleasant!!). Impatiently waiting for AF to hurry up and arrive so I know where I am in my cycle and can start planning to TTC. Feeling like I’m becoming a little obsessed and never thought I’d wish for a period!

butterfly5291 · 14/07/2020 22:38

Hi @Amy259 sorry to hear about your difficulty with coil removal...I very nearly had to go down the same path.
Have you been tracking bbt or using OPKs?
How long did you have the coil in for?

OP posts:
Amy259 · 15/07/2020 09:27

Hi @butterfly5291 I’m glad you didn’t have to - it didn’t last long but it was not a pleasant feeling!! I had it in for almost exactly 5 years.

I’ve been doing BBT since I had it out but they’re all over the place, I can’t see any pattern at all. And about a week ago I started doing an ov test every second morning, in the hope I’ll get some sort of idea as to what’s going on.

I definitely feel like the lack of cycle is making me more obsessive with the TTC than I should be at this early stage, I’m hoping I calm down once AF arrives. Lots of my friends have had babies recently and it’s blowing my mind now at how relaxed they were at the start, when they decided to just “let it happen”. Aside from my lack of period, I don’t really have a reason to be going as far as tracking temp, ov, etc but for some reason I feel like I need to. Anyone else??

Tabbycat92 · 15/07/2020 09:51

@amy259 I now the feeling. I don't really want to even conceive until September at the earliest (brothers wedding in Apr, so don't want to be ready to pop) but I'm desperate for my cycle to return, I was doing LH tests morning and evening, but I've decided to wait until my AF as its a waste of tests.
I've been using the app premom, you upload photos of your ovulation tests and it'll tell you when your peak is happening and ovulation is due etc. Very useful.
With my first baby, I came off of birth control (mini pill) and became pregnant before even getting my AF, so that's a bit of a positive for you xx

butterfly5291 · 15/07/2020 09:57

@Amy259 yeah mine was very uncomfortable/painful too but I figured best get used to pain down there 😂

Judging from a few other threads I'm on I would say you are not crazy at all...and you don't know what your friends were doing when they were at home...maybe they were tracking everything too but just didn't tell anyone.
The other threads are called pre conception planning and TTC first baby looking for fellow crazies or something like that if you want to try find them.
Might sound crazy but have you done a pregnancy test? There is a chance you could have got pregnant in the first month, heard it happen to others.
I only had my coil out on 4th July and I'm tracking bbt and OPKs every day. You could still have been ovulating with the coil in so I just want to make sure I have as much data as possible.
Also, are you taking folic acid and vitamin D supplements?

I had my mirena out in April. Also have endometriosis. First tracked ovulation 1st June and got these tests today. There is hope!!

TTC after Mirena removal
Amy259 · 15/07/2020 10:12

@eldiggity congratulations!! What lovely news!

@Tabbycat92 I’m the same, we were supposed to get married in April and it’s been postponed to 28th Aug (much smaller, I’m in Scotland and the rules here are 20 for the ceremony at the moment but hopefully it keeps going up!) so I was in no reeeal rush but not being able to accurately predict anything is making it feel desperate. I thought about stopping ov tests too but can’t you still ov before AF?? I’d like to know if I did ovulate

@butterfly5291 I take vit D anyway but not folic acid yet... thinking I should pick some up though. I actually had to do a couple of pregnancy tests because I have no way of knowing cycle day... so basically every 2-3 weeks since we’ve DTD I have to check! But that’s quite draining too, so we’ve had protected sex the last couple of times so that it’s now been 3 weeks since unprotected - just so I could be certain my negative test on Monday was accurate. So now I know I’m not currently ov and not currently pregnant.. and not currently having my period. I’m in nothingness just now haha. It’s a rollercoaster!

Tabbycat92 · 15/07/2020 10:18

@eldiggity congratulations :D

@amy259 I'm taking folic acid, just so I'm ready. Definitely you can ov before AF, so definitely worth tracking. I'll probably resume tracking in a week or so if AF hasn't arrived.
I hope your wedding goes well and you're allowed more guests! I'm sure it'll still be a lovely day

butterfly5291 · 15/07/2020 10:43

@eldiggity congratulations!

@Amy259 definitely start taking folic acid, drs recommend to take for 3 months prior to conception.... surprised your Dr didn't tell you to do that.
That must be so frustrating. I'm sure there's someone on the other thread that's going through the same thing, and some other people have said that happened to them and because our bodies like to play with our mind; the more we want our AF to turn up the longer it takes!
I'm just using femometer OPKs only £11.99 for 40 so I don't mind using them every day. Home health website has some one start ones that are even cheaper. Why not just try with them so you're "doing something"?

OP posts:
Amy259 · 15/07/2020 14:40

@butterfly5291 £11.99 for 40 is brilliant. I got a great deal on CB digital ov tests so got 2 boxes of 20 tests. Doing them every 2nd day for now on the off chance I ovulate before AF decides to show up!

butterfly5291 · 15/07/2020 15:29

Where did you get those CB ones from? How much did you pay for them? I need some for when I have a better idea of my cycle.

OP posts:
Tabbycat92 · 15/07/2020 15:43

So because you guys are testing, I thought I would too. I hadn't had a pee for about 5hrs so gave it a go... Literally no line on the test at all 😭 worse than before.

Amy259 · 16/07/2020 09:38

@butterfly5291 amazon, but I think it was an error because I got a pack of 20 for £16.. whereas they’re usually around £35!

@Tabbycat92 oh nooo, it’s all so confusing isn’t it! My app changed today to tell me that my temps imply I ovulated 5 days ago!! I was initially gutted because it had said it was next week.. then did my CB test first thing and it had a flashing smiley face which means I’m coming into high fertility! So confusing..

Racann · 16/07/2020 22:05

Hi all, hope it’s ok to jump in! I’m completely new to mumsnet.

Currently in month 7 of ttc and CD 44! My longest cycle.

I had my mc removed in Feb 19 and I started tracking periods straight away but we didn’t start ttc until December because we had already booked a Christmas ski trip.

I haven’t been checking ovulation at all, this is completely new to me but I’m worried about how obsessive I may become as I’m pretty bad as it is now!

I’ve taken a test every day for the last week and all bfn but still no sign whatsoever of AF, I’ve no idea what to do. I’m driving myself crazy here!

Tabbycat92 · 16/07/2020 22:45

Hi @Racaan
What tests are you using? Some reveal results quicker than others. Have you had any other symptoms? How long is your cycle usually?

Fingers crossed you get your BFN!

butterfly5291 · 16/07/2020 22:53

Hi @Racann
I would definitely get an early response test and if it is a no for this month then get yourself some ovulation tests kits (OPKs) get a bbt and read impatient women guide to getting pregnant.
Taking some action will help you feel like you are more in control. Guessing you've been taking vitamins like folic acid and vitamin D? There's some others you can try too. Let us know a bit more about your journey and we can try help xx

OP posts:
Tabbycat92 · 16/07/2020 23:06

I realised I wrote BFN instead of BFP!! Oops

Racann · 16/07/2020 23:08

@Tabbycat92 I’m using a mixture, I got 25 cheapies from eBay, some Superdrug early testing ones and boots too. Trying not to spend a fortune each month on it all.
I had a lot of cramping Sunday to the point I was doubled over and I assumed it meant af was on her way and for the last week I’ve been getting waves of nausea but I honestly don’t know if it’s my mind playing tricks on me. My cycle is normally around 35 but I have had a 40 in the last 18 months.

@butterfly5291 I have tried a Superdrug own early test and it was bfn so I’m assuming it’s definitely not happening this month.
I’m taking vit d and folic acid but I’m willing to add more if there’s anything you can suggest? I’ll give the book a read (thank you!) and look into opk and bbt!

Bit of background for you. I’m 32 and this will be baby number 2. My DD is 10 and she was a total surprise a few months after my 21st. I have epilepsy but not currently on any medication for it and i don’t think it should have an impact! Not sure if there’s anything else you need to know but feel free to ask away!

Thanks so much for your help already, I think I found the right place! Can’t wait to get to know you all better too!! And good luck ttc 💖

butterfly5291 · 17/07/2020 09:51

@Racann
That's good you're on folic acid and vitamin d - the Drs say thats all you need and i've driven myself crazy the past week reading advice and deciding what to take. I've just ordered some Omega3 with DHA from amazon because I don't eat fish and it's meant to be good for you. I think if you have a varied diet and eat lots of veg then you are probably fine.

I'm using femometer OPKs until I have a better idea of my cycle then will try the clear blue ones...because they are pretty expensive!

It's very hard not to over think and symptom spot so you have come to the right place to vent. Does any of your friends and family know you are trying? My mum and sister do, but I can't really talk to them because they just tell me to relax!

I'm on a couple of other threads that are really supportive too so you could check them out :)

OP posts:
Amy259 · 17/07/2020 10:18

Morning everyone!

My flashing smiley face on the clear blue arrived yesterday... then last night AF also arrived! Very confusing so think I’ll pick up some cheap OPKs today and use them, I’ve seen on other threads that some people get that flashing smiley for ages and actually found the cheaper ones more reliable.
