Basal temperature

Hey everyone,
I'm now going onto my third month of ttc, I have been using ovulation kits for the last 2 months but thought I would start tracking my basal temperature as well, I'm completely new to it so I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice on it? It says you have to do it at the same time every morning before getting out of bed but does it matter if it's an hour different or so? X

Yes it matters. Because the fluctuation is very small. Have a thermometer by the bed, alarm, test, go back to sleep if you want. Mine was very accurate and DD is 9.

raspberryjamlove · 02/04/2020 10:30

Following as I'm also thinking of doing this, no idea where to start! Any advice welcome Smile

danielasummer · 02/04/2020 10:38

It differs from person to person. I just do it after the longest stretch of sleep (at least 3 hours) - sometimes that's 2am, 5am or 8am. Never had a problem finding my ovulation on Natural Cycles app :)

laurah92 · 02/04/2020 16:45

@danielasummer thank you for replying, that's good to hear, I would probably still do it near enough the same time everyday, give or take an hour as I don't always get up the same time every day. How long did it take you to fall pregnant when you started tracking temperature? I only came off the pill in January so I waited for my withdrawal bleed and then started tracking with ovulation kits, the 2 cycles that I've had so far have been so different, one was 24 days and the second was 32 so that's why I thought I would start tracking temperature as well so I can really find out what's going on and hunt down that egg 🥚 haha 😂 x

@raspberryjamlove hey 😊 how long have you been ttc? I'm going onto my third month now, my cycles have been so different so far m, only came off the pill in January, so I thought I would try tracking my temperature as well as using ovulation kits so I can really pin point ovulation. Are you using ovulation kits? I know you have to take your temp every morning before you get up or do anything around the same time everyday, then I believe once you get quite a big rise in your temperature, it means ovulation has taken place, that's why I use ovulation kits too so I can get the days before hand too and use the temperature tracking to confirm that I have definitely ovulated 😊 x

@laurah92 no problem at all :) I am TTC currently and have been since November but when I fell pregnant in August 2019 (ended in MMC) it was a happy surprise although I had been tracking for years. I decided to go against what my app was telling me (told me not to have sex as I was potentially fertile) and fell pregnant because I thought I knew better haha and I ovulated CD33!

Tracking is amazing. Are you going to use an app or do it manually on your own? x

laurah92 · 02/04/2020 19:07

@danielasummer I'm so sorry to hear of your loss 😞 sending lots of baby dust to you 🤞for you this time round 🤞 I'm using two different apps that I use to track my cycles and my symptoms etc so I will use them to track my temperature and for charting 😊 what do you use? So you don't think it will make a difference and my readings will still be accurate if I'm not doing it at the same time every morning? I will try and do it around the same time every morning but it won't matter if it's like an hour difference or something? And you need atleast 3-4 hours rest before doing it, is that correct? Also after ovulation, when you have a rise that confirms it, would the rise be different every month? By how many it rises by etc? Xx

@laurah92 hi 👋 we are just getting back into tv after a miscarriage at the end of last year. We have a toddler too. I was very relaxed with the previous 2 experiences of ttc but after the miscarriage it's a different sort! I've started using ovulation strips alongside an app (started strips this month) and i got my peak 4 days before the app started. We are knackered arm as toddler doesn't sleep well which means less action lol! So would be great to really pin down ovulation to give myself the best chance so think I will also look at giving temping a go, just need some time to read up on it a bit!

laurah92 · 02/04/2020 23:01

@raspberryjamlove I'm sorry to hear that, sending lots of baby dust your way 🤞 I'm using the advanced Clearblue ovulation kit where it tells you 4 or more days, it's really good, then I thought that with tracking my temperature should really help me pin point ovulation. When af showed her face for me a few days again, I got a basal thermometer, it came yeasterday so I started tracking temperature from today 😊 and will start ovulation kits from next week. Where abouts are you? Are you just starting cycle or you in tww? X

Hi 👋 I am just using the cheapy one step ovulation sticks as I had them in from previous pregnancy but actually never used them! I was glad I checked when I did or I would have missed my peak this month going just via app but I knew myself I must be near ovulation...I'm 4dpo but we were only able to dtd once the day after my peak so not hopefully for this month and already planning ahead for next month lol! DH and I sat down and had a chat that from next month we will properly try. I have actually been trying last 2 months but didn't tell him as I know he finds it a bit forced then but to be honest think it's pretty obvious as I'm not the one usually making the moves WinkGrin I'm going to get a basal thermometer today (we'll order one!). I just have to remember to get in the bait if doing it! X

laurah92 · 03/04/2020 15:20

@raspberryjamlove I know what you mean, where I haven't been off the pill long, I wouldn't have a clue when I'm meant to ovulate as the last two cycles have been so different so until I've learnt my cycles and see a pattern, I will keep using ovulation kits and tracking my temperature. Yea it will take a bit of getting used to, setting an alarm every morning to take temperature lol. Yea my partner always knows when it's time lol as I don't leave him alone lol 😂 I wait a few days after af has gone then I try and dtd every other day or every two days till ovulation has happened. Can take the fun out of it sometimes lol 😂 x

That's a good idea and better than me - I try and get away with the minimum but clearly that's not working 😂 just ordered a thermometer off amazon which one did you go for?

laurah92 · 03/04/2020 18:51

@raspberryjamlove haha yea but it does take the fun out of it a bit lol, by the end of the 2 weeks or so I'm knackered lol😂 don't think I can keep it up forever lol, just atm where I don't really know my cycles cause they are so different, that way I hopefully won't miss a chance lol, hopefully my cycles will settle down soon and I will see a patten. Ovulation kits are so expensive so I hope I don't need them to long. Yea I got my from amazon too I got one call baby mad, what one did you get? X

@laurah92 I've started charting BBT a couple of months ago - the best info (and lots of it i didn't know) was in a book called Taking charge of your fertility. Honestly amazing! I finally feel in control and i am able to understand my body better! Good luck! :)

raspberryjamlove · 04/04/2020 07:57

Hi 👋 I got the ferometer thermometer which arrives next week so will let you know what it's like! I'm need to down load the app. Yeah I bet you're knackered! Will be good for you to know at least the window you're ovulating. Which ovulation tests do you use? I use one step and they're super cheap. Have a great weekend :)

laurah92 · 04/04/2020 11:16

@Moreinfopls ok thanks for that I will have to have a good at it 😊 how long have you been ttc? X

OP posts:
laurah92 · 04/04/2020 11:19

@raspberryjamlove yea let me know how you get on with it once you got it 😊 I'm starting to get used to waking up in the morning to do it. I'm using two different apps atm. Yea once my cycles settle a bit and I have learnt whereabouts I ovulate then I can settle a bit 😊 hopefully it won't take long. I'm using the advanced clear blue kit that tells you 4 or more days. It's really good but quite expensive. Hope you have a lovely weekend x

Moreinfopls · 04/04/2020 11:25

@laurah92 it's been a year now. Although to be fair, some months we've had better efforts than another... that's why i started charting in Jan - to give us a better chance and idea about what my body ia doing :)

laurah92 · 04/04/2020 14:08

@Moreinfopls me too, I only came off the pill in January so I've been using ovulation kits and just started tracking my temperature this cycle, so hopefully I can learn my cycles and pinpoint my ovulation better. Sending you lots of baby dust 🤞🤞 x

raspberryjamlove · 04/04/2020 20:59

Glad to hear you're getting in the habit.m...I need to try and remember! Can't wait for it to arrive now lol x

laurah92 · 04/04/2020 21:54

@raspberryjamlove my new ovulation pack arrived today so I'm happy now, I will start using them from Tuesday Smile keep me updated how you get on with it Smile I have to wake up about 6ish every morning now just to take my temperature lol, sometimes it can be a bit annoying, especially on day off lol 😂 times you have to do when you want a baby lol. How long you been with your partner/husband? X

OP posts:
raspberryjamlove · 05/04/2020 07:35

Ekk yes that's no fun!! We've been together 8 years and have a nearly 2 year old. Lots of early starts here though things are improving lol! How about you guys? X

laurah92 · 05/04/2020 14:10

@raspberryjamlove aww bless ya, how long was you ttc with your first? I've been with my partner nearly 8 years and we are trying for our first, Ive wanted to try for a few years now but we also wanted to buy a house first. We brought a house last year and now we are settled in our house and know what our ongoing and in goings are, we decided it's time to start ttc 😊 I was so happy to hear my partner say that he was ready lol 😊 x

OP posts:
Moreinfopls · 05/04/2020 14:53

@laurah92 I've been with my partner for 5 years, got married 2 years ago. We're in the similar situation - wanted to find a house and move first. And only started trying once we were settled in. That was 13months ago...i probably wish we'd started earlier. But equally knowing how stressed we were (moving+work), it probably would have been a challenge anyway.
Hopefully we'll have some baby luck this year :)

Glad to hear that your partner was ready too :) that's important!
Good luck with charting BBT. Let me know how ot goes.
My temperatures have been a bit crazy, looking like I'll get my period in a few days...not the news i was hoping for, but equally i am glad to be 'collecting the data' of my temperatures, as it'll help in the next month for sure.

Basal temperature
laurah92 · 05/04/2020 19:38

@Moreinfopls yea I know what you mean it's so stressful moving plus I wanted to be living in our house for a little while so we known our financial situation before making that decision. Yea I'll let you know what my chart is looking like towards the end 🤞 hopefully it will start rising again for you as you had that massive dip around 7/8 dpo which looked a bit promising, hopefully af doesn't show her ugly face for you x
