Short luteal phase - anything to try?

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 10:18

I am going into my third cycle of trying for my second child. I have a short luteal phase - in my first month, I got a positive ovulation test on day 17 (so assume I ovulated day 18) in a 27 day cycle, and last month I got a positive test on day 18 (so assume a day 19 ovulation) in a 28 day cycle.

I am taking 50mg vitamin B6 each day but think I will up this to 100mg. Has anyone tried any other supplements?

Just read on another thread here about vitamin C and am already taking 500mg a day so I will carry on with that. Have also seen vitamin E mentioned.

I also used angus castus and maca root from CD1 until ovulation day when TTC. My LP would range from 7 days to 11 days on average, they seemed to help a bit!

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 16:19

Thanks Quiffy. Did you notice your LP getting longer over time, or was it randomly between 7 and 11?

OP posts:
Quiffy · 24/02/2020 17:18

It went from 7 days to to going between 10 and 11 days. That was from November when it was 7 days to starting vitamins in December, so definitely helped a bit somewhere.

I've also read lots of advice not to worry too much about your LP, have you spoke to the docs about it?

Beau20 · 24/02/2020 18:32

@PeterPipersPepper I've never managed to get my LP past 11 days. Started at 8 and longest is 11 days but averages about 10 days. I had a chemical last month and AF just started spotting 11DPO. I've tried everything, agnus castus, B6 B complex, vit C. The only thing I haven't tried is progesterone cream as I'm sure I have low progesterone levels which is what's causing my short LP and not very thick lining.

Let me know if you come across anything else! X

paintfairy · 24/02/2020 18:39

Also interested! Mine isn't short as such but I start bleeding before AF. Sometimes right through from ovulation. I'm trying shatavari currently. The high b vits upset my stomach.

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 18:42

Hi @Quiffy no I haven’t been to the doctor as assume they won’t see me until I’ve been trying for six months? (I am over 35). Did you see the doctor when you were trying?

Hi @Beau20 how many months have you been trying? Lots of good luck to you

OP posts:
PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 18:43

Hello @paintfairy did you try taking them right at the end of a meal? I’ll have to google shatavari

OP posts:
paintfairy · 24/02/2020 18:50

@PeterPipersPepper yes I always take them with food. Stomach was just nuts and working over time the whole time. So I stopped.

Probably should have said- normal general blood test, normal day 2 blood test and normal pelvic scan.

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 18:52

How long have you been trying for now @paintfairy?

Lilice · 24/02/2020 18:57

@PeterPipersPepper I also have a short luteal phase and conceived on my 6th cycle. On that last cycle, I took vitamin b complex 100mg (on an empty stomach with a glass of high strength vitamin c). I'm pretty sure that's what worked for me. I also took evening primrose and coenzyme q10 (because I'm 36). My lp was 9/10 days.

paintfairy · 24/02/2020 18:58

Not that long. Only 3 months. I went to dr prior though because the luteal phase stuff is stressful and inconvenient! I knew it wasn't right. And I was worried it might affect our chances. I'm 37 so haven't exactly got forever.

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 18:59

Thanks @Lilice. Didn’t realise I was meant to be taking it on an empty stomach! I am also 36 - will google the other supplements you mention.

Would the doctor see you and do tests even thought you hadn’t been trying six months @paintfairy? Or did you go private?

OP posts:
paintfairy · 24/02/2020 19:16

Yes they did. Because I went complaining about my periods in general. Nothing to do with TTC. Because bleeding for 2 weeks of the month is not normal?

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 19:45

Ah I see @paintfairy. Hope you can conceive soon.

paintfairy · 24/02/2020 19:51

After 6 months I'll go back and push for more tests.

Beau20 · 24/02/2020 20:08

@PeterPipersPepper currently just moving on to cycle 7 of what feels like 1000

Has anyone heard of chlomid being prescribed for short LP as well? I've seen it on a few threads on here

Lnix · 24/02/2020 20:13

Hey op is your luteal phase 10 days? I thought anything between from 10 days was considered ok? Can't remember what upper limit was.

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 20:14

I am sorry @Beau20 seven cycles must feel like an age. I also saw a mention of Clomid somewhere...

OP posts:
PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 20:16

Hi @Lnix I think it is 9. Because I am getting a line on my ovulation test ten days before my period arrives.

OP posts:
PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 20:16

My understanding is that under 12 is potentially problematic but happy to hear otherwise!

Hi, as someone through the other end of this I would recommend persevering with the vitamin b6. I had a short luteal phase and the b6 worked well lengthening it and I'm sure it's how I managed to conceive my 2 DC. Once I got a positive test I gradually decreased the dose until stopping taking extra around 6 weeks .

PeterPipersPepper · 24/02/2020 20:28

Thank you @givemestrengthorgin do you mind me asking how long it took you and what you got your luteal phase to?

Hi everyone. I’ve had a wee read through the thread as this is something I massively worry about.
I’ve been TTC since June 2019 and in all this time I have been slowly and impatiently getting to know my cycle and familiarising myself with my Ava bracelet and what all that data is telling me along with the physical signs. I have chopped and changed between being certain I’m not ovulating and then sure I am. Convinced the Ava bracelet is a heap of junk and so I downloaded Flo. However Flo is way off and now I feel my Ava is def more accurate as I’ve used some OPK to back it up.
In all of this time the thing that seems to be settled is Ive a 24/25 day cycle with only an 8 or 9 day LP.
So of course this also gives me stress. I take Pregnacare, 100mg of Vitamin B6 and three wheatgrass tablets. I only started the Vit B6 and the wheatgrass in Jan and I have to say my AF has gone from being four days to five days and last month there was definitely more clots so I’m praying that means a better lining was built up last month. I’ve two boxes of Agnus Castus but haven’t had the courage to try them yet. Confused by the label which says not to take them if trying to conceive.
Anyway I’ve rambled on but I was more wondering if you think my Vit B6 is enough. It’s in the pregnacare and I take a single tablet too.
