@Ballygowenwater Yes sure. It was a bit overwhelming when they presented me with options and it was hard to find proper, accurate information anywhere about each one. I think that's because Ireland doesn't have an NHS equivalent yet maternity care is offered for free so it's a bit lacking in terms of organisation.
I could have gone private as it was covered by my insurance and would have allowed me to have a private room (subject to availability). However, private was consultant led and I wanted midwife led. In addition, I lived quite far from Holles St (National Maternity Hospital) which I would have had to go to for each consultant appointment, whereas they offered community midwife appointments near me so another reason why I opted for public.
Midwife-led also had the option of early release if everything went ok and I was home in less than 24h. In the end it was actually amazing as the early release meant they sent a midwife to our house every day for 5 days which was the best part as we had no idea what we were doing and had a list of questions ready for her each time
The post-natal public ward was fine, I had 3 others in my room but didn't really care since I pretty much just slept the night and then went home with DD after all the check-ups in the morning.
I think those are the only real differences between public and private in my case and in any case the private room isn't guaranteed. I was super happy with the care I got from the midwifes.
Any other questions let me know!
