Hi all,

Bit of a weird post but any advice welcome. My partner is catholic, not overly strict but still quite catholic 'abiding' and I am looking for catholic friendly contraception. He has heard that some pills, create an abortion like scenario where they allow the egg to be fertilised, but effect the lining of the womb so they can not house the feteous. Anyway so the pill is not ideal. Any one else out there catholic, and having sex!! Sorry if tmi!

thanks

The Catholic Church call it Natural Family Planning and it's based on the premise that cervical mucus changes throughout the month depending on fertility levels.

dustystar · 06/06/2007 20:49

But the catholic church disapproves of all forms of contraception morningpaper

bookwormmum · 06/06/2007 20:50

Go on the pill and don't tell him . It'll be your sin then, not his. Surely being sensible and using contraception to prevent a pregnancy is better than getting pg before you want to and having to deal with the consequences then? If abstinence isn't an option.

Chandra · 06/06/2007 20:50

Yes, I think that is! My mother must have got it totally wrong, we were born at a perfect rhythm of intervals.

NKF · 06/06/2007 20:50

But the OP's partner is only Catholic abiding rather than strict so presumably is allowing himself some leeway.

morningpaper · 06/06/2007 20:50

Dustystar, officially the Catholic church approve of all artificial contraception. However, Catholic birth rates are pretty much the same as their neighbours'. However, most Catholics do consider that life may/does begin at contraception, so there is still much debate to be had about ethical Catholic contraception.

fireflyfairy2 · 06/06/2007 20:51

Well, if he allows himself the pleasure of sex then he should allow her peace of mind by using contraception......

hippmummy · 06/06/2007 20:52

Hi barina

Use a condom. Simple barrier method. The catholic church wont approve, but if you are having pre-marital sex anyway I can't see why it would bother your DP.

fireflyfairy2 · 06/06/2007 20:52

MP, here in Ireland we are taught that no contraception is allowed.

barina · 06/06/2007 20:53

Thanks - although I am quite aware of the dangers of unprotected sex and the std things is covered.......
I just wanted some suggestions of different contraceptions as the pill/condoms has always been the option but since my DP heard of the post conception issue it has been something I've been trying to expand my options on.
Don't need the lectures on making babies though - although i see your gd intentions!!

Dusty may be right... I have a couple of freinds that are into the Opus Dei thing... they always made clear that they would have as many children as God cared to send... so they have just received their 6th bundle. Nice family though, and fortunately they have the resources to raise them, sadly they can not understand the issues that suround other families not as afluent as them.

NKF · 06/06/2007 20:53

Firefly - the "pleasures of sex" is one of the main problems Catholics wrestle with.

dustystar · 06/06/2007 20:54

I agree- I first found out about where babies come from when i found my Mums cap when i was 4 Mum has a strong faith but she decided that she wanted more control over the number of children she had

I personally won't use the coil or the morning after pill because they don't prevent fertilisation. I have used condoms and the pill though.

Chandra · 06/06/2007 20:55

MP same is thought in Latinamerica... no contraception or divorce... anulation of marriages is a European privilege.

fireflyfairy2 · 06/06/2007 20:56

NKF, I don't

bookwormmum · 06/06/2007 20:57

Italy is a catholic country as well and as far as I understand has one of the lowest birth rates in Europe (most families only have one child similar to China but for different reasons...) You can't tell me all the signors in Italia keep their trousers zipped up all the time. If they can wink at a bit of contraceptive use, then I don't see why the rest of the world can't.

Chandra · 06/06/2007 20:57

BTW There is no single place in the Bible that forbids sex before marriage (as long is out of love and not lust ) But tradition has made a rule out of the cultural uses.

tribpot · 06/06/2007 20:58

I have a very devout Catholic friend and NFP is one thing she has considered - personally I wouldn't advocate it unless it would be the end of the world if you did get pregnant.

Chandra · 06/06/2007 20:59

Mmm... thinking of that... I have not reviewed all the old testament books , I take back what I said....

But I remember discusing this with a priest and after a lot of discussion he told me... look Chandra... you are right, but if I accept this in public they would find me stoned by the door tomorrow!

NKF · 06/06/2007 21:01

There's old Testament stuff about not having sex before marriage. Can't remember the book. We used to find the relevant bits and snigger at them in my school. "If a man lies with a woman etc...."

barina · 06/06/2007 21:01

Chandra, completely agree. Abortion and contraceptions weren't around when jesus was alive so how can he disapprove something that didn't actually exist?? He didn't. It just the rules that have been made by man in the mean-time!!
It's a complicated situation as on the rare occasions we have sex, my boyfriend is riddled w guilt.
I find this situation difficult as I am not religious, but I love him very much so we are making do the best we can with the situation.
Oh dear!!

NKF · 06/06/2007 21:02

Barina, this will sound flippant but it isn't really. Catholics are often riddled with guilt. I am nearly every day of my life and I'm a pretty ropey Catholic. Guilt is part of the mindset.

barina · 06/06/2007 21:03

Oh god, I hope that wasn't blasfimy.

OP posts:
fireflyfairy2 · 06/06/2007 21:05

They say Cathloics have a very strong sense of guilt... as I have said before, I am Cathlolic, can you imagine going home to my Catholic, Irish mother & telling her I loved a Protestant Funnily enough I have never felt guilty for that, ever

I'm surprised that you just don't get married Barina & cut out all the guilt

dustystar · 06/06/2007 21:05

Actually forms of contraception and abortion have been around since the time of Jesus. Apparently Arabs used to place stones in the uterus of their female camels to prevent pregnancy - its thought that this is the earliest example of the coil
