Faint line. Period came. Big line. Help!

We are TTC. I was feeling pregnant before my period was due so took a test and got the world's faintest shadow of a line. Then my period came -not spotting, defo a period. It finished 2 or 3 days ago. Felt twinges this morning so did an opk which came up with two lines really fast. Did a PG test to be sure (four actually) and they all came up with clear as day bfps. Is it left over from a chemical? Have I miscarried? If so why are the lines stronger? Is it ectopic? Is it possible to have a period and still be pregnant? My mind is blown. Confused

Sometimes you can bleed in early pregnancy. Any bleeding which is red and heavier than spotting should probably be checked out. You may be too early on for a scan just now, but if you go to your GP and explain the situation they should refer you to your local EPU (Early Pregnancy Unit) who may want to book you in for a scan when you hit about the 6 week mark.

Tentative congratulations!

Lmj25 · 04/05/2018 18:02

It may have been implantation bleeding. I had what i thought was a period at start of this pregnant but must have been implantation lasted a few days only clicked on when it suddenly stopped not like my usual week ish long periods. Also had spotting on and off throughout first few weeks some was due to an infection. Hope everything goes well Grin🤞🏻

Lmj25 · 04/05/2018 18:02

Pregnancy sorry

M5tothesouthwest · 04/05/2018 18:14

I've had period-like bleeds with both of my pregnancies in the first month. I guess they're big implantation bleeds really (around the time my period was due, maybe a day or two early).
So you could well be pregnant.

SirVixofVixHall · 04/05/2018 18:18

Bleeding when your first period would be due is fairly common, I had implantation bleeding, my friend had bleeding, friend’s Mum bled quite a lot through her first pregnancy, so yes, as previous people have said, you need a scan at the EPU to see what is happening. Hope the result is positive.

KnitKitty · 04/05/2018 18:26

I forgot to mention, I found out I was pregnant after what I thought was a period. I was scanned at the EPU who confirmed pregnancy.

I unfortunately went on to lose the pregnancy, but I don't believe the bleeding had anything to do with that as the bleeding stopped and the baby grew before miscarrying a little later on.

Flappergirl86 · 04/05/2018 19:43

Thank you all, that is really helpul advice. I had a telephone appointment with a Dr who advised me to take another test in a week as it could be 'a blip'. Less helpful. Hopefully they'll send me for an early scan assuming tests stay positive next week.

I’m in a similar situation. I had bleeding about 5 days before af was due. It was heavier than spotting so I presumed it was a chemical. Didn’t bother testing as didn’t want the disappointment. But I have felt ‘strange’ this week and so I tested, and it was positive. Rang drs and they said the same thing: to wait until next week and test again. It’s so frustrating not knowing what’s going on! Xx

Flappergirl86 · 05/05/2018 07:53

It's good to know someone else is going through this! I'm not gonna manage a week without testing. I'll be checking every day no doubt.
I hope you get a happy outcome, fingers crossed for you x

Same to you. Keep us posted. Will try and hold out a bit longer to test again...maybe tomorrow 🙈 x

ClumsyFool · 05/05/2018 10:57

When I had a chemical pregnancy in January the line got darker about a day into the bleeding. A day or so after I finished there was not even a faint line so it may not be bad news. Although it’s too early for s scam would be worth contacting the dr again and asking for blood tests? Mine offered me to 2 tests 48hrs apart which confirmed that the level of HCG was indeed dropping fast so that at least I knew for sure. Just a thought if it helps rather than waiting as I know it can be horrible to wait.

Mummytoboyxx · 05/05/2018 11:57

Thanks for that. Always nice to hear other people’s experiences. It helps to clear things up about what to do next. Sorry to hear your news though x x

Evangeline3 · 05/05/2018 12:02

Implantation bleeding isn't that strong.
I think it's chemical.
Sorry.

SirVixofVixHall · 05/05/2018 12:11

I was seen at the EPU very quickly when I had bleeding. My GP had sent me straight to be scanned , she told me I was miscarrying, but they did scan me the day after I saw the GP, so waiting another week seems harsh . I needed a second scan a week later as there was no heartbeat , too early, so they couldn’t tell if the pregnancy was viable. All was fine.

M5tothesouthwest · 07/05/2018 23:14

Evangeline - as per above, I had period-like implantation bleeding with both my pregnancies. I had no reason to believe it wasn't a normal period. It was heavy, with clots etc. - very much like a usual period. The only slight differences in hindsight were a) the bleeding started slightly earlier than my period would've done and b) ended more abruptly than a normal period.
But at the time, I was quite sure I'd just had a normal period. Only took a test a few days later when I felt sick for 2 mornings in a row. Wasn't expecting a positive test!

Jellybean100 · 07/05/2018 23:23

@m5 how soon after the “period” did you get a positive test?

M5tothesouthwest · 09/05/2018 10:38

About 4 days I think, although the first test was faint (cheap strips from poundshop as I wasn't expecting to be pregnant - we weren't TTC - and didn't want to waste money!). Repeated with a Tesco one 3 days later and it came up dark straight away.

With my 2nd pregnancy I didn't bother taking a test as I just knew, but had symptoms (puking) almost before the 'period' had stopped. As soon as the bleeding stopped abruptly (after 3 days of normal bleeding), I had my suspicions and the next morning I had my head in the loo as soon as I got up, which confirmed it. We were TTC that time though and with only 20 months between DC, I could remember my first pregnancy very well.

Mummytoboyxx · 09/05/2018 11:33

I’m going for a blood test this afternoon. Still showing positive on home tests, but I’ve been bleeding since Sunday now. Heavier than spotting but lighter than a period x

Flappergirl86 · 09/05/2018 13:34

I'm in the same boat as you. Booked in for an ultrasound at EPU on Friday morning, I just want to know what's happening now! Good luck and keep us posted x

Mummytoboyxx · 09/05/2018 14:08

@Flappergirl86 good luck. The not knowing is the worse part! Fingers crossed for us both x x

Mummytoboyxx · 11/05/2018 19:24

How did you get on @Flappergirl86? X

Flappergirl86 · 12/05/2018 08:47

They couldn't see anything at all on the ultrasound but said it may be too early to show anything anyway so took my bloods and are going to take them again on Sunday to see what my HCG levels are. So still in the dark for now :( how about you?? X

OP posts:
Mummytoboyxx · 12/05/2018 10:12

I’m in the same position as you. My bloods from the dr came back positive so I’m booked into the EPU tomorrow morning for another blood test. But I think I’m going to ask for a scan too to see if they can see anything. I’m at a wedding today and really not in the mood. Bet you’re as fed up as me?! X

Flappergirl86 · 12/05/2018 16:29

Hope they give you a scan and something shows up. Im definitely fed up now. Getting cramps on one side today which doesn't bode well but it could be trapped wind. Hope the wedding is alright, don't feel bad about having a champagne if you want one. X
