Sex at a certain time for a boy or girl

Does this work? My friend told me something about having sex during ovulation for a boy and before for a girl or something like this. I must admit I just nodded and smiled at the time. I'm not ttc myself at the moment. Just curious.

Read the book ' taking charge of your fertility ' xx

Stephisaur · 28/04/2018 21:25

My mum reckons there’s something in it 😂 overheard her telling my sister today that the reason she kept having boys was because she had sex at the wrong time 😂

BamBamIsALittleShit · 28/04/2018 21:27

It doesn't work that way. You can't influence conceiving a boy or a girl.

Emma198 · 28/04/2018 21:28

Apparently girl sperm lives longer but not sperm is faster so if you do it's few days before it's more likely that the girls will be alive but if you do it on ovulation day you're more likely to get a boy. I can't imagine caring enough about the sex of the baby to risk doing it too soon or too late!

Emma198 · 28/04/2018 21:28

*boy sperm is faster

Pebblespony · 28/04/2018 21:30

Cheers Lilymoss, I'll have a gawk at it. This friend had a boy, girl, boy and now a girl. Just wondering if she's engineered it all. When I have another one I'll be grateful for 'baby'.

That's why more boys are born after a war - lots and lots of sex tends to makes boys

BusySittingDown · 28/04/2018 21:32

There’s The Shettles Method that I’ve heard people using to try for a certain sex.

I’ve never tried it as I wasn’t bothered whether I had boys or girls but my friend tried it after 2 boys to try for a girl and she got one. I doubt it would work for everyone though.

Yarnswift · 28/04/2018 21:36

There’s no hard and fast way of deciding sex without sperm sorting.

There are intriguing hints that certain social, nutritional conditions etc can subtly tweak the sex ratio. But you’re talking about billions of sperm so the chances of itvworling for you don’t stray much from 50:50 atcthe individual level :)

There are studies of red deer on the island of Rum and of the Seychelles warbler if you’d like to read more about sex ratio skewing. Birds can do it, red deer can do it (to a degree.)

UnexpectedItemInShaggingArea · 28/04/2018 21:40

You are more likely to conceive a boy earlier in your fertile period than a girl. But the differences at an individual level are so infinitesimally small as to make no difference to a couple. The differences are seen at a population level.

Interestingly cows are the other way around.

Bubblegum89 · 28/04/2018 21:53

There’s zero science to show this actually works. The shettles method is a load of rubbish. You can try it if you’d like but I wouldn’t rely on it

Pebblespony · 28/04/2018 22:06

Now I'm really intrigued about the red deer and the warbler. I'm definitely looking that up.

Be handy if you could do like reptiles and use temperature to determine sex. Loads of hot water bottles perhaps?

I read recently that this theory was rubbished and there's no actually evidence/proof.

I vaguely glanced at a "gender swaying" group on another online forum and there were lots of different boy/girl methods but even there they said the Shettle's method wasn't proven though plenty of people still try it.

It fascinates me tbh.

PetraRabbit · 28/04/2018 22:59

The most reliable site for this is genderdreaming. I know the woman who runs it has complied results from her members and drawn conclusions. A lot of it goes against all the old stuff like Shettles which now has been disproven. She recommends "one try" for conceiving a girl, which is most easily achieved by having sex only every 4 days. Not sure what she says for a boy. Almost everything she recommends for TTC a girl also lowers chances of pregnancy in general. I'm not a member but it's a really brilliant website with some really good new theories.

PetraRabbit · 28/04/2018 23:00

Compiled not complied!

Badwifey · 28/04/2018 23:08

I read before that most "accidents" are boys as the male sperm swim faster. From the kids I know who were unplanned the majority are actually boys. In order to conceive a girl then you are supposed to have sex before your fertile period to allow male swimmers to die off and the female swimmers to arrive just in time!

loupelou7 · 29/04/2018 10:37

I haven't mastered how to have sex and get a baby let alone boy or girl...this is like expert level conception haha Grin

This is what my fertility nurse told me and she should know. But it’s a numbers game and there are billions of sperm. So although you can affect things slightly you’re only shifting likelihood- I think the ratios she mentioned were something like 50/50 to 60/40.

newmumwithquestions · 29/04/2018 10:50

Actually forget the ratios - I remember that was also to do with the fertility treatment sperm cleaning process. But the principle is the same.

MrsDx · 29/04/2018 15:13

I have three big brothers and Mum says she ‘made sure’ I was a girl!

Claire90ftm · 30/04/2018 16:35

It's a load of rubbish, an old wives tale. There is no way to engineer yourself to have a specific gender, it's not possible. Sorry.

Merrz · 30/04/2018 17:51

My friend had 3 girls and they were desperate for a boy, they both changed their diets for a few months before ttc and timed sex for a boy. According to her you can't guarantee but male and female sperm do better in different environments so you can make your body more favourable for one or the other. Guess what . . . they had a baby boy.

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 30/04/2018 17:58

Well we just literally had sex all the time. Once a day, sometimes twice when I came off the pill. We were lucky and conceived first month of trying each time and the order went girl, girl, boy. By what people are saying we would have had more chance of having all boys. I think you just get what you're given

Keepingupwiththejonesys · 30/04/2018 18:00

Merrz, surely though that's just that the odds were in their favour. After having three of one sex statistically you are more likely to have the other with a fourth. That's not always how it is but statistics were on their side. I will admit though I really hate the whole trying for a certain sex. You have a baby, just be happy.
