You should not self medicate with agnus castus as it can affect hormone levels. If you really want to try this stuff then you are better off seeking a medical herbalist's advice initially.

beckyjones · 16/01/2007 16:48

Don't take it!!!! I took in September for 14 days prior to ovulation, got Pg but miscarried, I will never ever take it again, it is much better to take folic acid and some multi vitamins.

Good Luck x

jeddah · 17/01/2007 16:44

god! don't know what to do now, alot of women on this site have self medicated??

OP posts:
poppiesinaline · 17/01/2007 17:44

I take it, trying to regulate hormone levels.

It says on bottle 'not for use by pregnant or lactating women'

So I assume it is not safe to take if you were ttc. hth

jeddah · 17/01/2007 23:09

poppiesinaline
they say you are to take it up to when you ovulate, and then stop. It is taken when ttc for women who have low hormone levels particlarly a short luteal phase

greedyforbabies · 18/01/2007 12:58

dont know if it helps, but my friend recommended i take it cos it helped her. she had 2 mcs whilst NOT taking it and then twins after she started taking it! i am taking it at the moment...my bottle says 2 twice a day and they are 400mg. its really hard to know what to do for the best isnt it? i was too tempted to try something new which is why i am taking it

Ready · 18/01/2007 17:44

I would say have a chat with your GP if you are unsure. Isn't there anything less controversial that can help lengthen your LP?

jeddah · 19/01/2007 19:17

ready

yes there is ...progesterone suppliments... but problem is... trying to convince doctors that you have a short luteal phase in the first place!

its all such a mixed up business!!!! I guess it tells us that.... we are not being listened too...... not being supported and ......we are so despirate for our beautiful baby that we pray for everyday of our lives.

(((hugs))) J. will they start you on clomid at all?

greedyforbabies · 19/01/2007 20:49

haven't i heard people on here talking about B6 lengthening a luteal phase?

shagirl · 19/01/2007 21:03

I took agnus castus as directed on the label from Holland & Barrett. Prior to this my 1st 3 pregnancies ( the middle one was a miscarraige)were as a result of taking clomid. After taking Agnus for 3 months I fell pregnant & now have a lovely & healthy 1 yr old dd no.3! From this I've recommended 2 friends to take Agnus & they have both gone on to have healthy baby girls!
Sorry I can't remember the dose but I just followed the instructions on the labbel.
Good luck xx

jeddah · 19/01/2007 21:49

thanks shagirl........will give it a try

munz! got adoption bods coming to see us in a couple of weeks!

  • can u not pull any strings at work? I know you don't like to do it but surely there must be something that can be done?
Twiglett · 19/01/2007 21:55

supplements that a woman can take that are 'supposed' to be helpful in optimising conception on top of the standard pre-natal vitamins:

Baby aspirin (less than 81mg) daily throughout cycle

Vitex Agnus Castus from period to ovulation (although some theories that can be taken throughout cycle but should be stopped when pregnancy established)

Evening Primrose Oil (1500mg to 3000mg per day) from period to ovulation (do not take past ovulation)

Vitamin B6 (100mg to 200mg) most B6 supplements have a lot less so should ask specifically for this

HTH

Twiglett · 19/01/2007 21:56

Jeddah .. my consultant did NOT believe in progesterone for treating luteal phase defects (I had short one) as she said it just treated the symptoms

she put me on clomid to give my hormones a boost (50mg x 5 days).. I was ovulating but had an 8 day phase .. I conceived first cycle

Ready · 20/01/2007 14:49

snap Greedy - I was sure I had heard about B6 for that reason, and it seems less scary that Agnus whatsit.

jeddah · 20/01/2007 15:29

Girls I took vit b6 and concieved 3 times on it!........but miscarried 3 times also (scared that there may have been a link????)

I have asked my consultant what his thoughts are on Agnus whatsit... waiting to hear form him.

OP posts:
Ready · 20/01/2007 15:40

Sorry to hear that Jeddah... well, I will not be promoting B6 as the less scary option in the future. that is for sure.

hester · 27/01/2007 22:38

Jeddah, I did take agnus castus, and starflower oil and folic acid and probably a good few other things - as you'll remember, I was flipping desperate and willing to try anything. Looking back, I wonder if i was a bit gung-ho and maybe should have been listening to people like Attila. Anyway, unless your GP is considerably more clued up than most s/he possibly won't have anything useful to say, but I would seek further advice - your consultant if you think he will handle it sympathetically. There's a book by someone called (I think) Marilyn Glanville on preconceptual nutrition that has a lot of detail on supplements. I'm sorry I can't remember the title - I'll email you when it comes to me - but she works with Foresight. Maybe you could give Foresight a ring and ask them?

Good luck lovey.

babylove123 · 27/01/2007 23:24
