TTC #1 coming off the pill in December - anyone else in the same boat?!

Hi,

I am going to be coming off the pill after ten years plus on it after my pack finishes in December. Excited but also terrified about what my body is going to do once I'm without all the hormones!

Anyone else doing the same roughly the same time?

Ni4444 · 20/10/2015 14:09

Ladies, can I join in the chat? This is my first ever Mumsnet post...feels weird!! I'm still trying to make sense of all the abbreviations! TTC #1 !!! :) I'm 33 and so is my OH.

I'm on a similar timescale as some of you...came off the combined pill 3 weeks ago after about 10 years! I had a 2 month break 2 years ago and despite fearing I would be an emotional wreck and covered in spots I noticed no side effects, AND my cycle was exactly 28 days for those two months (which is amazing because pre pill I was always irregular!) so I'm hoping my system will get in order quickly! ...Although I also think I'm being really rather naive!!! I always thought I would wait 6 months to a year off the pill before ttc but my biological clock is ticking too loudly!! This time round I needed a new prescription, debated changing pill, read more about side effects which was just the excuse I needed to come off it to be honest!! So we are now ttc!! After years of trying not to this feels so strange!

I'm reading lots on here (thanks for all your comments so far!!) but I'm not temping or anything like that. Just downloaded one of the basic ovulation calculator apps and am almost convinced that we will be successful in month one...cue lots of monthly disappointments in my future if I don't reign my excitement in! I'm taking a general multivitamin for the past year, but it does have 400mg folic acid (funny I should have spotted that, eh?! #canyousaybroody ?!

Purple we're also looking at houses, but prices are so damn ridiculous! I'm so ready to start nesting...and to have maternity leave!! :P

Hi Ni welcome to the thread.

As I'm sure you've worked out, we're all really excited and about ttc too so you're in good company.

You mentioned multi-vitamins. Most normal multi-vitamins aren't good for ttc because they have high levels of less helpful sulpliments like vitamin A. I believe the NHS website has a list of the supplements you want to avoid but it's a good idea to swap to a preconception multi-vitamin while you're trying. Hope you don't mind the suggestion. Don't worry, if you spend enough time here you'll end up addicted to pregnancy articles too Smile

Ni4444 · 20/10/2015 15:26

Thanks for the welcome Runner05 and for the advice! Wink

I actually stumbled across that info about Vitamin A earlier and double-checked that my multivitamins are ok. They seem to be. Just as well as I bought 3 months worth yesterday! I guess I should have just bought conception ones...but it all seems a bit unreal yet! You guys are the first people I've told that we're ttc!! I just don't want all the questions and update requests from friends! That will seriously send me into impatient ttc meltdown mode!!

If anyone else wants info about conception supplements see here:
www.nhs.uk/Conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/vitamins-minerals-supplements-pregnant.aspx

Actually...I just compared my regular multi-v to the conception one and there are quite a few differences in supplements included, the amounts etc...might have to go into Boots and out myself as ttc after all!

Good afternoon all and hi Ni welcome aboard.

Bought some early response tests yesterday they were expensive but figured may be the best option for my pre holiday test. Got some cheapies from eBay a few weeks ago for when I am in a four weekly routine. My mind is in baby overdrive lol.

Slightly increased our offer on the house as it seems the seller's want it sold quickly and we are still within our budget. Waiting to hear back is so hard.

Runner05 · 20/10/2015 16:56

Glad you've got it covered Ni Smile and I know what you mean about unreal. I don't start ttc until December and I keep expecting OH to say we should wait.

Ooo Purple do let us know as soon as you have an answer on the house. I'm just waiting for the estate agent to come round and value the apartment. So excited!
When do you go on hols?

StarkyTheDirewolf · 20/10/2015 17:54

Hiya guys! I've been busy crocheting away! Bought some ovulation tests, ant bring myself to buy any pregnancy tests yet though, because if I buy them, I'll want to try them! How are we all doing?

shelbTa · 20/10/2015 18:30

Hi everyone,

Welcome Ni! I know what you mean by everyone else being pregnant etc around you - a lot of my friends are all on mat leave together at the same time and made me realise that I probably won't have that with the timing of it all.

Good luck with the new offer purple! And any tests obvs!

Aw you guys are a friendly bunch! Smile

shelb it's almost laughable...I just got a call this evening from another friend saying she's 5 weeks pregnant!! It feels like an epidemic!!!... Let's hope it's catching! Wink

leoniethelioness · 20/10/2015 20:53

Hi, can I join too? I'm not sure if we will definitely be TTC in December or not at the moment but we're going to start thinking about it seriously then!

I stopped taking the pill (after many years!) after finishing my last packet at the end of August. Since then I've had a withdrawal bleed, immediately after the last packet, and what I assume to be my first real period in nearly a decade (!) about a month later. I'm now on CD 33 so the second one is due any day now. Hoping to get back into a rhythm by the time we want to TTC - my periods always used to be very regular so hoping it won't take too long.

We're waiting until December for a few reasons but perhaps the biggest is that I'll be entitled to enhanced maternity pay at work for a baby conceived after then. We've got a big holiday planned towards the end of the year and quite a few jobs to do around the house too, which we would like to sort out first.

We've not got any children yet and have been married for a year.

Pinklily1 · 20/10/2015 20:53

Hi everyone, and welcome Ni!

I had a little look at What to Expect and it made be cringe :-)

Anyone know if you're meant to take Vitamin D before TTC? I saw something saying take it while pregnant, but not sure if we are meant to take it before as well? The only thing I'm taking at the minute is folic acid.

I forgot to say in my first post, I am 32, OH is a year younger. I'd have started TTC a while ago if I had my way but we've just bought our first house together and OH is more sensible than me! Hope your offer is accepted Purple - a new house and a baby would be lovely!!

Hi Pinklilly and Leonie!

OH yeah, OH and I are both 33. Would have loved kids earlier but took quite a while to find the right guy! We're only together almost 2 years but very happy and very ready now Grin

Pinklilly this post suggests that some vitamins and supplements pre pregnancy can help with fertility, ovulation, and even morning sick symptoms?! So no harm getting levels built up in your body pre ttc I guess?

Runner05 · 20/10/2015 21:56

Hi Leonie Smile

Blimey, our little group is getting quite sizeable now.

Stark when are we going to see pictures of these wooly creations?

Seems like there's a lot of us 30 something's on here. I'm 34 OH is just about 39 and in denial
We actually decided to ttc because I mentioned I was going to ttc in my contraceptive review and the nurse basically told me I better do it now or I can forget about having kids. I was in floods of tears for days over it so OH caved lol

Oh, and valuation on the apartment was much better than I expected. So happy Grin

Pinklily1 · 20/10/2015 21:59

If there's a hint it will help then I will take it!

Sounds like we are in a similar boat - OH and I have been together 2.5 years. Even though he's only a year younger than me I think that's impacted on him not being ready until now.

Ni4444 · 20/10/2015 22:20

runner05 I had a similar experience with the GP about 6 months ago. I already knew risks increase, fertility drops after 35 etc, but he really had a go at me...and I was 32 then!! That said I suppose his lecture, coupled with me going on about risks post 35 etc, did help my OH understand the tick tock I was feeling!!

Pinklily1 · 20/10/2015 22:37

Ni and Runner, I can't believe your GPs were so doom and gloom! A girl at work was told pretty much the same thing when she went to her last doctors appointment and she is only 28! When I heard that it did make me panic a bit!

Runner05 · 21/10/2015 06:55

Interesting to hear it's not just me who had such a negative experience and I found it ironic that after the telling off the nurse tried to convince me to swap my pill for an implant or coil. Idiot.

We had been intending to wait until we'd bought a house and got married before babies but after I looked up all of the articles about fertility and health over 35, there was no way we were waiting.

Did you guys know that at our ages it's more likely to have twins, even if there aren't any in your families. I have fx that that doesn't happen to me Confused

Ni4444 · 21/10/2015 07:47

Really? I don't think I'd heard that about twins! Although, my OH did land it on me last night that his gran was a twin so it is in the genes on his side-yikes!!

In fairness the NHS is probably trying to save money on complications and IVF in older mother pregnancies! I think they are scaremongering a bit...but it's probably necessary to get people moving on with ttc! And it clearly worked on us!

Happy hump day ladies...living for the weekends with these dark mornings! (how will I survive the sleep deprivation a baby brings?! Confused)

Runner05 · 21/10/2015 08:57

Apparently as you get older it's more likely that you will release 2eggs instead of 1. I've read about it and had it confirmed by a health visitor friend of mine too. Scary!

Was talking to OH about ttc last night and he told me the only thing he wanted to know about was all the extra dtd. I told him that it was a good idea to do it every other day... He looked a bit sheepish and informed me that might be a bit much lol

shelbTa · 21/10/2015 13:23

Hi everyone!

Welcome leonie! Ah I'm in a similar boat MAT leave wise as my enhanced pay doesn't kick in until after two years employment (before I go on mat leave) and I think (if all goes to plan, big if of course) I'll be a few months shy of that. Is yours similar?

Runner, haha, I hear you - DH was giving it the big guns but realistically we are pushed for once a week at the mo! Although I've been told sex drive goes up after coming off the pill so who knows....!

Thinks twins skip a generation don't they?

Shelb x

OP posts:
Ni4444 · 21/10/2015 14:17

Runner, Shelb, same thing over here! OH reckons every second day may be too much for him! I read that sperm can survive in the female body up to 7 days, so I reckon we'll be ok!! ??

BunchOfBobs · 21/10/2015 14:33

Ooh I've missed a few new joiners. Hi everyone!

Shelb you are very much correct. Sex drive does indeed increase after coming off the pill Blush. DH today told me I am "obsessed" Shock With a smirk but still! DH is unfortunately not in the same position as me, though I imagine the whole TTC fear is a good dampener for his libido.

I'm only going to get statutory mat leave pay due to being self employed which is why DH wants me to earn as much as I can now beforehand.

Eek Runner I daren't tell DH about the twin thing as they already run in my side and my mum is adament I will have twin boys. She had it predicted years ago Hmm - she's a bit woo like that. I want to be pregnant so much but the though of twins is rather terrifying.

My experience with the nurse was quite a positive one on my last contraception discussion "As you're recently married we wouldn't recommend the implant, injection or coil". I was rather pleased but if I didn't want kids I may have been quite offended. DH and I have been together 10 years, married 18months, I'm 29 and he's 35 (both coming up for a birthday).

Starky I second the call for photos!!

purplesmiler · 21/10/2015 17:02

Wow I keep missing so much on here. Great to see so many of us now the support really helps me I know that!

Well the house offer was accepted yay got it well under the asking price so now it feels a bit go go go. Me and OH were so suprised it felt a bit surreal last night lol. Thanks for all the well wishes they helped so much.

Well both me and my OH have been poorly over the last week so DTD has been a bit less but normally we are every other night. I have to admit having quite a high sex drive I've been the same since meeting my OH. It's all fun and hopefully now it will create a new life.

We go away in 10 days so ready for it, it is stressful at work though it seems if you want a break you still have to do the work you would have been doing beforehand!

BergamotMouse · 21/10/2015 17:08

Afternoon all,

Ni - isn't it that Twins run on the maternal side? As it's in the mother's genes whether or not she is likely to release 2 eggs. So you're probably at no higher risk.

For me though - my gran's a twin, her twin sister had twins and my grandad was a twin. So I don't have much chance if it skips a generation.
