Hi to everyone joining! Fingers crossed for a good month for us all.

Can someone talk to me about OPKs? What time of day is best to do it? And is it super important to not drink beforehand? I drink like a fish throughout the day, and don't think I could last 4 hours without a drink.

CarrotVan · 20/07/2015 07:41

I think opks are generally better done in the late afternoon/evening as the relevant hormone builds through the day. Except for the Clear Blue dual hormone kit (I think) which uses FMU

Welcome everyone. This should be a busy bus.

CD8 and the spotting after the AF after last month's CP has finally stopped. MrVan has his orders and is prepared to be used for his body. Except now he has a sore throat...

Banana79 · 20/07/2015 07:45

Give him some paracetemol Carrot! Besides his throat is irrelevant to what you need him for Wink

WhyStannisWhy · 20/07/2015 07:47

Are OPKs worth investing in straight away? I was thinking of just going at it like rabbits for a month or two. Not sure if that would be a waste of time?

CarrotVan · 20/07/2015 07:57

Shag every other day from when your period ends until the next one begins and you'll hit your fertile days

Opks are good for people who don't have regular cycles, need to schedule sex for the optimal time due to working patterns or sperm preservation, who are monitoring during/prior to fertility treatment, aren't sure if/when they are ovulating or are control freaks (like me) who need to fell like they're doing something...

That is true banana but he's not great at compartmentalising. If he's ill then he's wholly ill!

KittyandTeal · 20/07/2015 07:57

I like using opk just so I know what's going in with my body, we still dtd every other day for most if the month.

My spotting has stopped now, cramps have calmed down and just getting twinges now and again. I'm being terrible for knicker checking though. Between the spotting and negative test I'm very confused. Only 3 days to wait (well 2 and a sleep)

pingoose · 20/07/2015 08:46

We're panning on DTD every other day, but since I'm still not regular I wanted to use OPKs to see how I'm getting on.

PallasCat · 20/07/2015 09:54

So sorry it was a CP CarrotVan

FlatWhiteToGo · 20/07/2015 10:15

Pingoose - you're fine to drink but try and drink less than you usually would. I also neck the water 24/7! I get really panicky and de-hydrated if I go for more than half an hour without a drink (massive weirdo, I know). When I'm doing OPKs I try and cut back to maybe 1- 1.5 glasses of water in the 4 hours before I test, rather than the 3+ I'd usually have.

As for whether OPKs are useful - I found that I often ovulate really late in my cycle. As my cycle length is always roughly the same, I wouldn't have realised this without OPKs. That said, for the early days of TTC I'd recommend getting cheapies from Amazon rather than splashing out on the Clearblue ones!x

CarrotVan · 20/07/2015 11:12

FML. Just been baby bombed by my line report. Unplanned but welcome second child and I'm happy for her especially as she had problems conceiving her first but AAAAAAARRGGGGHHHHH

Banana79 · 20/07/2015 11:36

Oh carrot that is so tough. I hope you've perfected your fixed grin. Does she know you are ttc?

FlatWhiteToGo · 20/07/2015 11:47

Awww Carrot - I'm sending a big hug. It really sucks doesn't it.

81lilygirl · 20/07/2015 11:58

Hi, can I join?
Name: Lilygirl
Age:34
Cycle No:1
TTC No:1
Testing on:13 August

This is DH's first time at ttc, he is only 27 so it's a bit new for him! I ttc in a previous relationship, spent 2 years trying and had 1MC and 1 ectopic. I'm a bit worried as we have moved from Glasgow to Aberdeen, and I have no idea if I will be able to get the extra support I would have been getting in Glasgow. I was told that I would get scans from 6 weeks due to the ectopic, so hopefully that will be the same up here.

I feel a little guilty, DH is currently suffering from depression, and ideally we would have waited until he was doing better, but my 35th birthday is weighing pretty heavily on me, and I would love to at least be pregnant by then, it's a big thing mentally, I'm convinced that on my birthday, all viable eggs will disappear!

Looking forward to getting to know you all, I made some great friends on the boards way back, and hopefully the same will happen this time

CarrotVan · 20/07/2015 12:13

Nope - and to be fair someone else who does know I'm ttc and had a recent MC told me privately so I have time to get my head together.

lily MrVan suffers from depression and I had our son at 33 just as he was coming out of a bad few years. He was really worried about the impact of fatherhood on his mental health but so far it's been ok. I'll be 36 at Christmas ...

KittyandTeal · 20/07/2015 12:28

Oh carrot that's tough. I've been working with 2 pregnant ladies, one of whom conceived right at the time we were going through our tfmr.

It's been really, really hard. I'm finally in a place where I can be happy, chat to them and not just stare at their bump longingly but it's been rough. I don't envy you.

Spotsondots · 20/07/2015 13:16

Welcome to all the new passengers Grin

Lily, it is standard practice to scan at 6 weeks for previous ectopic so you shouldn't have trouble getting the care you were expecting before you moved.

Carrot, that's really tough and I empathise. I had a MC before we conceived DS and a good friend announced her pregnancy by sending me a scan pic the day after I'd been seen in EPAU. It made me feel so miserable but she wasn't to know. Keep your chin up!

marmitemofo · 20/07/2015 15:56

that sucks balls carrot, surprise baby bombs are the worst Sad sending hugs

Madredear · 20/07/2015 15:59

Can I join please? Smile

Name: Sophie
Age: 20
TTC cycle: 4
TTC No: 1!

Madredear · 20/07/2015 16:00

Oh and I was due to test today but I won't be testing for another few days, I like to wait to cancel out any chance of late ovulation.
P.S my boobies are on fire and I've never had sore breasts as a PMS symptom.

81lilygirl · 20/07/2015 16:11

Thanks Carrot, DH seems to be feeling like he has done nothing with his life, so part of me thinks that maybe a baby would give him one tangible thing.
It is so hard when baby bombs drop all around you, one of my cousin's, who never wanted a family in any way, just had a baby, and I was pretty floored by that, but we weren't trying at that point, so I didn't feel I had any right to be upset.

Spots, that's good to know. I'm trying to keep all my anxiety at bay (considering we are only 3 days since we had the talk), but I wasn't sure if it was a regional thing.

Madredear, fingers crossed for you, sounds promising
