Just wondered if anyone else is like me and DH and have been thinking about baby names?? We can't agree on girls, but boys we find easy... we could have a bunch of boys and agree on every name!!

I know I shouldn't be thinking of names when I am not even pg, but I can't help myself!!Anyone got any cool name ideas?? Promise I won't steal any of them I'd love to hear what other people are thinking... or am I the only one mental enough to think this far ahead??

Or possible work in fashion??

Think you're setting your kids up for a hard time if you get too poncy with their names.

And it's our job on MN to warn people from themselves

ready4motherhood · 13/11/2006 16:12

I think it's because I felt they were not even names. I still feel a bit guilty. But I agree with you JuicyLucy, it's not really fair on the children to have names like that.

MrsMcJnr · 13/11/2006 16:39

I think the people you have known through your life change the name for you forever, school teachers must find it so hard to choose their kids names as I'm sure they will have had an awful child to teach with every name at some point! Where's Coggy for an opinion on that?!

I think we would pronounce it "X"avier instead of "H"avier but being in Spain, that would be the way his friends would say it (I was madly in love with a "H"avi when I was 15 - corr!)

I did mean Isaac, best not call my
child something I can't spell hey! I think it sounds like a manly and wise name too.

Yeah Zeus would take some getting used to....

DH has been arguing that Benitio could be Ben but I asked him what the point of calling a child something is only to shorten it? no offence to anyone but all my life people have tried to shorten my name (it's Amanda) and I don't like Mandy at all - just not me.

I think if you love a name and someone else has used it, you have just got to go for it.

Keep em coming girls, I'm getting lots of ideas
here!

JL2 - I get a tingle whenever you talk about your baby, I am just so delighted for you, do miss you a lot on these threads and so I get really excited when I see your name! .

Mia would be Mia Rosemary for my grandmother. I wish she would hurry up - you can all laugh at me when it doesn't happen but I am nearly certain that my first child will be a girl.

ready4motherhood · 13/11/2006 17:41

MrsMc - I am so pleased you have shared your names with us! If anyone comes on here and says anything bad about them I'll show them the door!! Other than Zeus, which again is just not something I would choose, there is nothing that could be slated IMO. Some people are so plain

OP posts:
ready4motherhood · 13/11/2006 17:44

Meant to say, Benitio wouldn't need shortening if he loved his name! It's just nice to have the option. I know a couple of Andrews that hate being called Andy, so I know where you are coming from. But I prefer the shortening of my name to my actual name, so I suppose it works both ways!!

What do people think of Thea?? Will it end up being pronounced Feeah and driving me potty??? Think it's really pretty though

largeginandtonic · 13/11/2006 21:15

Some fab names coming up, Mrs Mc i love your names, Zeus so cool. I may mention it to Dh, he likes Brutus and Caesar but im not keen My sis is Kathryn (scottish dad) i love the spelling of it.

I want some more please, anyone there tonight?

largeginandtonic · 13/11/2006 21:17

Forgot to say Ready4motherhood dt's had a best friend Thea, she was lovely. Her mum had another girl and called her Tula also very cute.

katyjo · 13/11/2006 22:08

So many lovely names, I also liked Leah for a girl but dh didn't like it said it was old fashioned. I also liked,
Anna
Rhea
Emma
Lily (after my gran)
Rebecca
Lydia

Didn't have many boys name, but hope these give you some ideas, a lot of more unusual names being used I have a friend with a baby girl named Sorcha (irish) and a little boy called sebastian, both lovely names, I think.

funnypeculiar · 13/11/2006 22:23

Ready4motherhood - crashing thread after seeing my daughter's name ... we have a Thea - and yes, all of ds's mates (he's 2 1/2) call her 'Fear'... but we still like it
Good luck ttc!

MrsMcJnr · 14/11/2006 10:00

Thank you . I really like Lily too but as my surname ends in "e" I feel the first name can't end in anything that sounds like that. My sister has a Thomas Euan and a Drummond Charles and my cousin has an Orson Peter. My Uncle wants to know what the hell is wrong with our generation! Like Thea too

ready4motherhood · 14/11/2006 10:36

Katyjo - thanks for your list! I wonder where Rhea comes from??? It's pretty and very unique! Which is what I want, something that sounds lovely, looks pretty on the page (is that mental?) and something that 3 other children in the class will have. can't even entertain Rebecca as I know lots of Beccis, Bex, Beckys.
Liking Lydia....
And Sorcha - how unusual. DH would veto.

Thanks Funnypeculiar - Not too worried about the kids pronouncing it Feeeeeaah. Just the grown ups that should know better.

MrsMc - LOL at your Uncle. The YOOF of today!!
Thea has made it on the list. yay. DH loved your suggestion of Isaac, but the quickly remembered that we have already chosen our boys names (is that weird??)

Hey LG&T. Oscar was on my boys list as it's actually Irish (not many people know that!). It's spelt Osgar in Irish mythology. I loved it and think it's a great strong name. DH HATEED it. Said it would make him think of Oscar the Grouch in Sesame St. I said "what about one of the most famous Irish writers?" and he goes, "Oh great, the most camp man in Western Europe." and pretty much said no way.

We've Conor for a boy and Aoife (Ee-fa) for a girl or maybe Cassidy - would be this baby's great-great-granny's maiden name. (No she's not still alive; great granny is 86.)

Some lovely and unusual names on this thread.

Frenchsmallfry · 14/11/2006 12:45

Good link. I really like Frankie - mentioned in the link for a girl. Don't think dh will go for it some how though. Reminds me of that song. You know the one. Frankkkie.

greedyguzzler · 14/11/2006 13:46

my ds and dd have unusual names....not sure if i want to share for fear of getting laughed at, and fear of everyone thinking they are SUCH fantastic names that you will all pinch them and call your kids by the same name and then they will no longer be unusual!!!!
anyway....ideas for no.3 if it ever happens include
serien (means twinkle or star or something else similar and cute in welsh!) for a girl or lloyd for a boy. we would prob change our minds if we ever do get pg, cos we are like that!
natty......how about calling yours 'about flippin time' or 'knackered from all the BDing' or 'YIPPEE'!!!!

largeginandtonic · 14/11/2006 13:57

Had major name discussion on the phone last night with Dh, he had many suggestions that will not be going on our list. A few have made it though, so this is our list so far bearing in mind we have another 24 weeks to decide 26 if going by my last prg or 13 if going by my 1st prg!

Atticus Dulcie
Arthur Florence
Oscar Scarlett
Wilbur Cosima (mimi)
Montgomery (monty)

So what do ya think? Notice Brutus has gone, just couldnt let Dh think i was going to let him have it for the next 5 months only to let him down at the end I mean really?!

Frenchsmallfry · 14/11/2006 14:04

lg&t, I like Monty thats really nice. Arthur is quite cool. I love the really old names making a come back. How about Austin? It was my Grandfaters name, I like it but dh is not so keen.

Bodkin · 14/11/2006 14:14

Currently loving "Laurence", shortened to Laurie for a boy (loved Cider with Rosie). DH not keen. Got 8 months to work on him though

Girls are more tricky - he says he's sick of all these "old lady names". Shame, I love 'em - Lily, Ivy, Elsie etc.etc. Mind you, DD1 has an OLN, so if we had another they really would sound like a right old pair of biddies!!!

largeginandtonic · 14/11/2006 14:17

Bloody hell has smooshed all my names up together, now they do look weird. Obviously there should be a boy column followed by a girl column!

largeginandtonic · 14/11/2006 14:19

Greedyguuzzler please post you names, love unusual ones. My Dd is called Seraphim, ive never met another one yet!

greedyguzzler · 14/11/2006 14:41

yeah well they are not that unusual.....ellis and kiki! thats it
now i feel like i have lost all anonimity on this site! anyone can track me down! have to be careful what i say in the future!

Natty1806 · 14/11/2006 14:46

Thanks for the suggests - loving 'about time' form my LO middle name
