Light periods after stopping pill

HRMC87 · 20/03/2015 12:02

I stopped taking my pill in December and TTC since. I have had really regular periods since but they are so light! The same every time, period pains start on the Sunday night and I don't get it til the Friday. Last for 2-3 days and I can get away with wearing only one pad everyday. Getting worried now, I know it takes time for them to get back to normal but I have had 4 and they were never like this before! Anyone had anything similar with success?

@Hope365 Ahh that’s great news, hope they work for you 🙏🏻

Not till Feb, and a consultation in March. Then hoping for a break to try and focus on something else! Lots of luck with yours!

Maisy24 · 07/01/2020 16:16

@Hope365 sorry I've been off my phone quite a bit just trying to keep my mind off it but now I'm 10dpo and ready to start this month again 🙈 hope you had a lovely Christmas and new year! How did staying with your friends go? I'm the same I hate big family gatherings now as I just know people are going to comment around when we are having kids. I wanted to ask you a question, I have my appointment letter now and it says it's with the gynaecology department, I was expecting the first appointment to be both me and DH , should I just go on my own to this one? Did you see the gynaecologist or was a joint appointment first?

@Melbs6 thanks for the positive story, it's good to know light periods are not the be all and end all, and a big congratulations!

@JennaRMD so sorry you got a negative, this journey really is awful, sending lots of love your way.

@Louise3467 so sorry you are having a similar issue as the rest of us, thanks for sharing. It's been a huge help having these lovely ladies to share information and rant to. You are right my gp doesn't seem recognise it's the pill, but I don't think gps are very informed around fertility issues, @hope has been very helpful sharing knowledge from the hospital, I will be doing the same when I attend my appointment in Feb. Sending lots of luck your way for 2020!

JennaRMD · 09/01/2020 08:43

Hi all! I have my blood test on day 24 of this month, is that too late to tell if I'm ovulating if I usually ovulate around day 14?

Hope365 · 09/01/2020 10:38

Hi @Maisy24, don't apologise - it's def good to take some time off the phone and the TTC stuff when you can! For your appointment I'm not really sure to be honest - it was different for me as the letter we got was for a fertility clinic, not gynecology, and it explicitly said that we had to go together with OH. In my experience gynae and fertility are two quite different departments, but maybe it's different where you are? Perhaps try to get in touch with your GP - or if there's a number on the letter - to check whether your DH should be going too, and check that they made the correct referral for fertility? I'm sure they have but can't hurt to check!

@JennaRMD I think usually they like to check 7 days after ovulation - there's a chance progesterone will have started dropping already by 10 days post ovulation. Any chance you can ask to get the blood test a few days earlier?

In big news I received my drug delivery in the post yesterday... pretty intimidating massive parcel full of a million different things, and lots of needles 😬 Scary but also I can't wait to start! Obviously after my inconveniently short cycle last month, which meant I missed starting treatment now because I was still away, my cycles are now back to being long, so I've just got to be patient and wait... typical uncooperative body 🙄

Xxx

JennaRMD · 09/01/2020 11:15

@hope365 I'm waiting on a call from the doctor to see if I can get in on day 20 instead of 24. Is there anything else they can check from bloods other than ovulation? I'm not really sure what to ask for? I'm like 90% sure I'm ovulating as my body is like clockwork, all the right symptoms leading up to and after AF but this month (like all other months) I had 2-3 days of a very very light brown discharge and that was it. I just want someone to tell me that it will sort itself out and it'll happen eventually but don't know if there's anything else they can check for to see why my periods are so light. We're coming up 8 months now and still no baby, which is ok but I just want to know why!

@hope365 so glad you have all your stuff. Fingers crossed for you!!! Scary but very exciting journey ahead x

JennaRMD · 15/01/2020 09:00

Hi all!! How are you all doing? I got a surprise pregnancy announcement yesterday from a friend, 3 months of trying. Ugh. So happy for her but just wish someone could tell me why it's taking us 8 months so far.

Hope365 · 15/01/2020 11:27

Hi @JennaRMD, ugh sorry to hear that... pregnancy announcements are the worst (especially surprise ones). Two of my closest friends are pregnant at the moment, and a third has just had a baby, and all of them got pregnant really quickly. It can feel very unfair and lonely...

Where are you at with your blood test? Did you manage to get it moved to day 20? I'm not sure what they can check during the luteal phase other than progesterone, but there are a load more tests they should do at the start of your cycle (usually around day 3 I think) - like FSH, and tests for thyroid function. They're all things that can affect your period, and pretty standard tests - my GP ordered them for me the first time I went to see her about my period issues. Hopefully you get some answers soon! 🤞

@Maisy24 did you find out more about your appointment? Is it at a fertility clinic, and with your DH? Xxx

JennaRMD · 15/01/2020 13:50

@hope365 it's ok. I'm super happy for her I just don't understand why it's not happening for us. Although they won't test DH until 1year so need to wait til May if it hasn't already happened. I'm booked in for bloods on the 21st now, although I've just had an ovulation smiley this morning which is day 15 so it's exactly on time along with EWCM and ovulation cramps so they are likely only going to tell me what I already know but I'm going to go anyway. Was trying to not think about it all too much and had been doing well up until last night 🤦.
How's your treatment coming on? Xx

Maisy24 · 15/01/2020 17:58

@JennaRMD really sorry about the announcement they really are awful, no matter how happy you are for them. Glad you are getting a blood test, at least it will be a double check! I'd ask to do the other ones if you start another cycle (hopefully you don't). I'm on for 18ish months ttc now and i am beginning to think should I just give up.😓

@Hope365 hey. Yes I rang the number on the letter and they confirmed it was a fertility referral and we need to both go, it's just in the gynaecology department; I can't wait for it to come around! I'm currently 2dpo , my cycles have been regular now for at least 5 months so I'm hoping they are starting to get back to normal after the pill! How is your treatment going? How you feeling.

Wishing you both the best of luck for this month girls 💖💖 I think you two are the only ones where I wouldn't get a sinking feeling, I'd be made up! 🍀🍀🍀🍀

Xxxxx

sredwards · 15/01/2020 17:59

I had light periods after stopping the pill, been TTC since may. Took me 4 months to get pregnant :). I'm sure you'll be fine xx

MrsKirsty · 15/01/2020 19:18

Hello everyone, sorry I've been away for a while. Really needed a proper break over Christmas and New Year to not think about TTC for a while and get drunk alot haha. Didn't go on any TTC websites or blogs (my OH's advice 🙈).

Just been reading all your updates from the last 6weeks and so much stuff has happened for you all!! Referrals coming through, proper positive opks and treatment plans. Was so lovely reading all of this just now! Although it must feel like nothing is happening for you, reading it all seemed so positive!! As you can imagine, still not pregnant but I'm 9dpo and feeling positive like I do every month lol

Sending you all the pregnancy vibes 🤞🏼🤞🏼

MrsKirsty · 15/01/2020 19:23

@sredwards so great to hear your positive experience getting pregnant in 4 months! We need a bit of that positive thought. I always remain hopeful! Xx

JennaRMD · 15/01/2020 20:22

@Maisy24 that's good news that it's at the fertility clinic, at least it's a step in the right direction. Hopefully you can get some info on why it's not happened yet. I just wish someone could tell me that it's just taking us a bit longer but we're both fine, if I knew that as fact I wouldn't be in any hurry, would just go with the flow and let it happen, it's just the thought of something being wrong that gets to me the most.

@sredwards it's so good to know that light periods don't always mean issues but I wouldn't be worried at all if I was pregnant after 4months... When it gets to 9months-18months it starts to play on your mind a bit more unfortunately 😣.

@MrsKirsty I tried to do the same over Xmas and New year and I'd been succeeding until last night!!! Good luck for this month! 🤞 For you hun ❤️

MrsKirsty · 15/01/2020 21:23

@JennaRMD I completely agree, on my 9th cycle and people still tell me it will be fine... I always think how do you know? 😔 meanwhile I'm 32 this year and getting older!

Thank you so much for the good luck 🥰 where are you on your cycle?

Also... Just to let you all know, I found out Nov 18 I have underactive thyroid which was corrected with meds by Nov 19 and I've since found out it causes infertility (when not on meds) so I'm keeping all fingers and toes crossed that being on the correct meds might be what we needed to succeed 🤞🏼🤞🏼

Have any of you had your thyroid/TSH tested? I don't have irregular or heavy periods which is the usual symptom but I found one study that mentions it can cause scanty (light) periods!! last few months each period has got a bit heavier (previously it was getting lighter and lighter every month) Xx

JennaRMD · 15/01/2020 21:45

@MrsKirsty yeah I know, I'm on my 8th cycle. I'm 28 and kind of just wanting to have kids before 30 ideally so just keep telling myself I have time to get stuff sorted if need be. Just wish I knew it would defo be ok and then I could chill and just wait it out but hey ho. My periods are the same heaviness every month (basically nothing) but I've spoke to 3 doctors and they all say because I'm regular and have all the correct symptoms then it all seems fine. Doesn't help tho unfortunately. Only facts will help, just hoping I don't have to rely on the facts tho and it'll just happen before the 1y mark.
No I've not been tested for anything as of yet, going to see how the bloods go abd then proceed from there xxx
Least you've had some insight to why things might have been a bit slow tho, always a step in the right direction xxx

MrsKirsty · 15/01/2020 22:10

Yeah I really didn't want to be an 'old' mum but starting to feel like I might be!! Just hope we all get the chance to actually be one 🤍Xx

Can't believe 3 doctors have said that's normal, I've read so many stories of docs not listening to women and it makes me so mad!! I had two docs tell me my thyroid didn't matter and then a 3rd made it clear it was super important and wanted to actually help me. I think I was just lucky. Even though it meant I had something 'wrong' with me, I was so relieved that this might be what's going on with us... At least once you have bloods you'll know if it's your hormones etc and get a clearer picture. Something they can fix is easier to deal with than unexplained infertility which, if things don't change for us, is what I'm most scared of Xx

niamhie95 · 17/01/2020 13:02

Hey all, just wanted to give you an update on my situation. When i got my period on the 23rd November. It lasted a few weeks and went away but then it has come back again and was quite heavy it went away again last week so hopefully it can stay away for a bit 🙈. Last night was two first time me and my partner were able to have sex in months sorry if that was tmi lol x

Hope365 · 19/01/2020 08:56

Hi ladies!

@Maisy24 great news you got confirmation that your appointment is fertility not gynae! I know what you mean about feeling like giving up, it's hard when it's month after month of negatives... But there's so much that science can do for us these days, and obviously it could still happen naturally too - I try to remind myself we've every reason to be hopeful!

@JennaRMD keep fighting those doctors telling you that it's normal - it's not, and they should give you all the basic blood tests without having to wait for the one year mark, because it's not all about TTC, also just your general health. Like @MrsKirsty mentioned, thyroid is an important one to test, and could maybe even be an easy fix - @mrskirsty I really hope it's the answer for you and you get that BFP soon!

Thanks for asking about my treatment 😊 I haven't actually started yet - have to wait for this cycle to finish first... Currently 2DPO, obviously hoping we will be that miracle couple who get pregnant naturally just before starting treatments (but not really believing it) 😂. So the countdown is on, 10 days to go and I can't bloody wait to get started! Never thought I'd be excited to inject myself but honestly I'm so excited to start doing something... Feels like I'm taking back control a little, though obviously I'm terrified of how I'll feel if it doesn't work 😬

@niamhie95 glad to hear things might be getting a bit more normal for you!

Sorry if I've missed anything - it's hard to keep on top of the messages! Keeping everything crossed for all of us - like @maisy said, pregnancy announcements in the real world are pretty hard to deal with, but I would be so so happy for any of you! Rooting for us all 🤞😊💕

JennaRMD · 19/01/2020 19:16

I've been reading about hypomenorthea and it sounds exactly like what I have. Got docs on Tuesday to see if I'm ovulating and might get them to check other hormone levels just not sure what ones to ask them to test for lol. @hope365 excited for you to start, hopefully this month or next will be lucky for some 🍀

niamhie95 · 20/01/2020 10:46

@Hope365. Thanks, it has still stayed away hopefully 🤞

Hope365 · 21/01/2020 23:54

Hi @JennaRMD, how did your blood test go today? Did you find out whether they will test for other things like thyroid, FSH etc? Xx

JennaRMD · 22/01/2020 19:53

@Hope365 I got bloods takeb but the doctor had only ordered a progestogen test so the phlebotomist couldn't send it away for anything else. It'll likely come back fine and then I'll worry it's something else. It's never ending ha. Wish I could just forget about it x

MrsKirsty · 23/01/2020 18:48

Hey everyone!

@Hope365 how exciting you'll be starting treatment soon, as daunting as injections must be, I'm so happy for you that you've got steps to take now! Getting back in control must feel wonderful. Really hoping you get your bfp soon 🍀!!! Any one else fantasize about what it will be like when you find out you're pregnant or just me lol 🙈

@JennaRMD Glad you've been to the doctor's, let us know what you find out about your progesterone. If you're not ovulating, the good news is there's lots they can do. If you are, its definitely worth another chat with them to see what else they can test for.

@niamhie95 at least you can feel better from some sexy time now haha 😂

As for me, I'm on CD4, when I started spotting on Saturday I cried on and off all day... Some months I'm fine others I just fall apart 😔 because of this, I'm going back to doctors. I have an appointment Monday morning where I'm going to say I've been trying a year (been 9 months now). Just want to feel like I'm doing something! We'll see.

Sending you all baby vibes, would love it if someone in this group got bfp, would give me life and hope again 🍀😊 Xx

niamhie95 · 24/01/2020 14:52

@mrskirsty thanks. Hopefully it stays away then i can enjoy it lol 😂 been a long time lol

Hope365 · 24/01/2020 16:17

@JennaRMD totally know what you mean about wanting to forget about it all. This whole thing takes up so much headspace... Fingers crossed you get your results back soon and the doctors suggest a next step - you should definitely push for those other tests! Although to be honest you shouldn't even have to push - they're pretty standard tests to run for anyone who is having abnormal periods, it's just frustrating that doctors don't seem to recognise light periods as abnormal... 🙄

@MrsKirsty I'm sorry to hear you had to deal with the disappointment of another failed cycle... it never gets any easier does it. Just wondering - have you seen any difference in your cycles/periods since taking the thyroid medication? Really hope your appointment on Monday goes well and they get the ball rolling for a solution... Keep us posted!

I'm 7DPO and as usual getting mild cramps and backache like I do every month 😔 I'm sure it's part of the problem somehow - feels like my body starts preparing for AF far too early each time, even though I technically have a normal length luteal phase... Looking on the bright side and getting excited about starting treatments, probably in about a week (!!), though obviously I had secretly been hoping that we would be that couple that gets pregnant naturally just before starting 😂 The hope never does quite go away, even when it's failed so many times before...

Wishing everyone so much luck! Love being able to share with you ladies xxx
