could spotting between periods be a sign of a problem?

I've always had spotting in between periods since I came off the pill in 2009. We've been TTC for four months. I know it could take us a while but I'm wondering if I should get the spotting checked out? Or do most GPs decline any investigations until you've been TTC for at least a year?

And just to clarify it's too late in my cycle to be related to ovulation, I ovulate CD13/14, spotting is CD22-25 and AF on CD27

I'd be interested to know this too - stopped the pill in Dec and on third 'period' since new years day.

I've been to GP before about extra bleeding, they just asked me about infections (it took a while to realise they were suggesting I might have an STI - naive or what?! Thankfully I didn't) and said it's of more concern if you have no periods at all (and not pregnant). Otherwise they weren't interested. I think they put it down to stress.

There's no harm at all in speaking to a GP about it, for your own peace of mind, as it's been happening a few years. But they probably won't take action on the ttc front until you've been trying a year, I believe. Maybe someone else will know better..

NiceCupOfTeaAndALittleSitDown · 25/01/2015 12:36

I've had this for years. My GP said it is a sign of ovulation- so a good thing if you are ttc?

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/01/2015 14:18

Even when it's several days after ovulation?

Karelia and OP - I came off the pill at the start of December and withdrawal bleed aside, I've had three periods too. And all very light.

Buggered if I know what's going on!

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 15:39

Since being off the pill a year I still find that I spot from 4 to 7 days before af arrives, I have been to the doctor who told me it won't affect my chances of getting pregnant, been for an internal scan and that came back fine, I took a low dose of vitamin b complex last month and that cut it down to 4 days before period is due, I am taking a high strength vitamin b complex this month to see and hope it stops it, I can't help thinking that this is stopping me getting pregnant, i have been told to come back to my doctor after a year if I have not conceived, I have another few months to wait, I am trying to research online as much as possible to see what it could be and see if I can help myself,

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/01/2015 16:17

Rainy: your spotting sounds similar to mine. I'm taking the pregnacare conception vitamins at the moment, I'll check the b vitamin level in them.

Thanks for the replies.

Noarmani I am taking pregnacare too but I don't think the level of b vitamins is enough for me

DareGreatly · 25/01/2015 17:36

Have you had a look at the Zita West conception vits?

You need to remortgage the house to buy them but I'm pretty sure their Vit Bs are off the scale (along with all the other usual stuff.)

Will potter downstairs and take a look if anyone wants to know how much exactly.

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 17:45

Dare I am interested but if I buy anymore supplements my cupboard will explode with all the stuff I have ??

DareGreatly · 25/01/2015 18:18

Yup, tell me about it. I have a cupboard in the kitchen that looks like it's sponsored by Holland & Barratt.

Zita West B vits:

B1: 50mg (4,545% RDA)
B2: 40mg (2,857% RDA)
B3: 20mg (125% RDA)
B6: 10mg (714% RDA)
B12: 20mg (800% RDA)
B5: 50mg (833% RDA)
B9: 400ug (200% RDA)

I guess Zita West doesn't hold much truck with recommended daily allowances! Hmm

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/01/2015 18:38

I've just bought a 4 month supply of his and hers pregnacare. If we have no luck after that I'll try the Zita West ones

As others have noted on this board, the Zita West ones also turn your pee an illuminous yellow. Which is vaguely amusing!

NoArmaniNoPunani · 25/01/2015 18:51

DH and I have both noticed that with the pregnacare too

Hi, I had spotting whilst ON the pill. This was a problem for me however, my advice would be go to your gp and ask for a smear test regardless of your age I was 23 and not due a smear

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 19:06

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 19:39

Dare i know, i know, I'm hoping these bloody pills work!!!!!

DareGreatly · 25/01/2015 20:04

Yes - I like these mega vits, it feels like at least I'm giving it all I've got!

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 20:11

i am the same, I'm hoping i am not building myself up for a fall, they were recommended by a friend who had spotting all the way through her cycle , she ended up pregnant while having a cyst on her ovaries, she has been nagging me to try them, as you say i don't know what else to do

DareGreatly · 25/01/2015 20:21

I think it definitely can't do any harm, and people report lots of happy side effects like improved hair, skin etc.

I had lots of spotting when I was on the pill. I never found out what that meant.

I've only been off the pill a couple of months, and already realising how easy it must be to feel despondent when AF comes.

Am even considering stuff like acupuncture in a 'what else can I throw at this?' way! (I am mid-late 30s though so have more cause for worry...)

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 20:26

I am 35 in April, i wish i came off the pill when i was 30, we were not ready then but at least i would have had some time to let the pill come out of my body, i don't feel so tired and i normally ovulate cd 13 but this month since taking them it has delayed ovulation, think it will be more like cd 16 which i see is being better, only hoping it in improves my LP too

Think either Acupuncture or Reflexology may be my next step

DareGreatly · 25/01/2015 20:33

Yes - I wish I'd come off earlier too!

I'm still not good at spotting ovulation signs so haven't been able to work out my LP. My cycle this month was 24 days, so pretty short.

I actually have a reiki session booked in a few weeks - just for the relaxation, as I had it once before and I just felt really nice afterwards.

Let us know how the acupuncture goes if you go for it!

SolomanDaisy · 25/01/2015 20:36

It can be a sign of progesterone deficiency. B vitamins are good, but also try Angus cactus.

Rainy34 · 25/01/2015 20:37

I normally have a 24 cycle day, the only way i know i am ovulating is i have the clear blue fertility monitor and it tells you when you are about to ovulate, i do get pain down one side and only a little ewcm,

Let me know how the Reki goes, hopefully it relaxes you so much you get your bfp!!
