Haha sorry it seemed like a bit of a weird blunt post "just stick a finger up and see what comes out" but honestly it's the best way! Grin

justb01 · 14/08/2013 11:43

Hi ladies, I'm new in here, but this is my bus! I'm actually due today, and no AF so far! I'll wait two more days and test then. Keep your fingers crossed!

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 11:43

Do I have to be able to locate my cervix to do that? If so, I have no idea what I'm looking for!

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/08/2013 11:47

Rrading with interest re the cm and cervix location......

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 11:47

Ha ha! Waiting with baited breath!

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 12:12

First, wash your hands very well.

It’s vital that you don’t introduce any kind of infection into your reproductive system. (If you’re dealing with a yeast infection or any other kind of vaginal infection, you shouldn’t check your cervix until the infection is cleared up.)

Find a comfortable position that will allow you to easily reach your cervix.

That may be sitting on the toilet, putting one leg up on the edge of the bathtub or squatting.

If you think of your vagina as a hallway, your cervix is the other door at the very end. While your vagina has a sort of spongy feel that gives way easily to pressure, the cervix is like a firm, round dimple. Some say it feels like the tip of your nose when you’re not fertile and like the firmness of your lips when you are fertile — this is what you’re feeling for.

Reach your index or middle finger inside of your vagina, and slowly slide your finger in as far as you can reach, a sort of in and upward motion. If you’re not close to ovulation, you should find your cervix easily. If you are ovulating, your cervix may be higher in your body and more difficult to reach.

When you’re just learning how to check your cervical position, you should check your cervical position every so many days, even when you don’t think you’re ovulating. It’s much easier to find when you’re not ovulating, and you’ll have a better idea of what you’re feeling.

As ovulation approaches, the cervix moves higher up, becoming softer and less firm and opening more. High, soft and open is a possible indication of approaching ovulation: you should make time for sex if you want to get pregnant. Low, firm and closed is not a fertile sign, and you’re probably not ovulating yet. Once you get used to checking your cervical position, fertile signs become very easy to recognize, but it does take practice and time to learn. Be patient with yourself.

Don’t be afraid to touch your body! Some women feel like checking their cervical position violates some unwritten rule, as if there are parts of your body that belong to the domain of doctors only. Or they may be afraid of hurting themselves. (Just be gentle. If you’re worried, consider what goes on during sexual intercourse. Checking your cervix doesn’t come close to sex. You’re not going to hurt yourself.)

If you’re marking your cervical position on a fertility chart, it may ask you if your cervix is in a high, medium or low position or whether your cervix feels firm, medium or soft or whether your cervix feels open or closed.

Don’t expect to understand what you’re feeling the first, second or even tenth time you try — -this is a skill that comes from practice and patience. Once you learn what the signs are by experiencing the changes in your cervix throughout a few cycles, though, you’ll be a pro.

Tips:

If your cervix always feels slightly open, don’t worry. Especially if you’ve ever given birth (that can include a miscarriage), your cervix may never fully close. As ovulation approaches, you’ll still be able to notice the height and softness changes of the cervix, though.

Signs of approaching ovulation include a high cervical position (you may not be able to reach!), a softer cervix and a more open cervix. You’ll also probably notice more fertile cervical mucus near your cervix (this is also a good time to check your cervical mucus).

Don’t check your cervical position during or after sex. Your cervix actually moves around according to your level of sexual arousal, regardless of ovulation.

It helps if you check your cervical position at the same time every day. It may be a good time to do it when you get dressed in the morning.

Some women try to figure out if they’re pregnant by checking their cervical position. There really is no way to know whether you’re pregnant by checking your cervical position. (You just have to wait until you can take a pregnancy test.)

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 12:15

What you're looking for re: fertile cervical mucous is CLEAR stretchy mucous that can stretch between your fingers. When I get the really good stuff (haha) mine is gloopy, clear (totally see through like water...! ie not white) and stretchy.

Basically exactly like egg white when you crack open an egg! Hence egg white cervical mucous Grin

I only get it for a few days in my cycle.

BlueC2 · 14/08/2013 12:20

These are the times when I'm glad I work from home and there's no chance of anyone reading anything over my shoulder Blush thanks for the imformative post gilly

I'm clearly taking this waiting in my stride and am uber calm about it all Wink got rather ahead of myself earlier and drew a plan to rearrange my spare room/office into bedroom for DS so that he can vacate the nursery for #2 ...oh dear must focus on work and not think about possible bfp...Hmm easier said than done! Oh how I'd forgotten how all consuming this whole thing is!!

Springtime26 · 14/08/2013 12:21

thanks for all the information.I am going to try to do the same as Englishteacher, but I don't think will succeed. I think I have used up all my self control trying to wait to poas till day after af due :-) .

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 12:34

Thanks gilly, very informative! Right, just located my cervix (possibly) and couldn't really work out whether it was soft or not, having nothing to compare it to, but there was hardly any mucous unfortunately :(

ArmyLovin · 14/08/2013 12:41

When you get ewcm does it mean your due to ovulate or you are ovulating? I had it just Sunday and Monday..

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 12:48

I get it in the days leading up to a positive OPK.
Then within a day or 2 of getting the positive opk It's normally gone.

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 12:48

Ps armylovin are you armywag? Just name changed?

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 12:50

It's your bodys way of creating a welcoming environment for the sperm.. So it will happen a few days before ovulation and continue for a few days I guess. I got my positive OPK on cd20 this month and started noticing EWCM on cd17-18. By cd21 it had pretty much all disappeared!

ArmyLovin · 14/08/2013 13:12

Yeah gilly it's me lol. Oh I see I'm just trying to work out when it could of happened cuz this month is the first month I really noticed the ewcm. I think it would of happened by now then as I've not got it anymore.

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 13:32

Does it tally up with when your period is due? X

ArmyLovin · 14/08/2013 15:16

I'm on cd 14 now and had the ewcm on cd 10,11 & 12. I'm just going as period due any day from cd 31 as I'm so irregular. Could that be too early for ewcm?

Sparrowlegs248 · 14/08/2013 15:23

Thank you for the explanation! I have located my cervix!!

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 15:32

I'm on cd14 as well and really don't think I've ovulated yet, but interested to hear you ov on cd20, gilly, as I was starting to think I was running a bit late!

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 15:50

I came off the pill at the end of December last year.. My cycles still haven't regulated since then.

I've had a 31 day cycle, then 29 day, 30 day, 47 day, 33 day and then 40 day!

This month looks like it will be around 34 days based on the fact I got my positive OPK on cd20 and it looks like (from previous months of using OPKs) that my luteal phase is 13/14 days.

I say this is only cycle 3 of ttc as this is my 3rd month of using OPKs which are literally a god send cos all previous months we were failing simply cos I had no idea when I was ovulating/how long my cycle would be etc.

At least now, even if I'm having a weird cycle, I can see when I'm ovulating thanks to the OPKs!

Gonna carry on using them and hopefully i will get my bfp soon. Just wish I was using them from January when I came off the pill!

DisneyDiva87 · 14/08/2013 15:50

That's very useful Gilly thanks Grin I've tried locating my cervix before and it does kinda gross me out a little (not really sure why I'm not really a squeamish person - unless snot is involved) but maybe I'll try again

OP posts:
VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 15:54

Gilly - I've been using them since coming off the pill (this is ttc cycle 1) but we are dtd every two days anyway so hopefully not missing ov anyway.

Beautifulboy1 · 14/08/2013 16:17

Hey Vjones,
I just read an article on netdoc headed "do I ovulate too late to conceive" really interesting and basically says that its doesn't matter how late you ovulate you can still get pregnant, also says that some ladies temp goes up days after they have actually ovulated so it is best to dtd when you "expect" to ovulate and when your temperature tells you too! Hope I have explained properly, if not check out the article, would send you the link but I'm crap with computers so no idea how! lol x

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 16:28

Thank you, that's great. Well,if the opks are right and I haven't ov yet, it's only cd14 so am trying not to panic yet. There's also the chance that the opk hasn't worked or I haven't used then correctly. However, judging by my cm, I don't think I have actually ovulated yet. Will continue dtd every two days just in case!

cheesysmile · 14/08/2013 16:31

Notta your post made me laugh, sounds like a military operation this cervix location!!! Grin

On the cervix subject think mine is kinda open today as far as I can tell and have more EWCM so really am gonna have to be extra nice to DH tonight, especially as he's away tomorrow.
