I don't want to give anyone false hope but I didn't find out I was pregnant until I was 6 weeks with my first! I had full AF and had BFN 5 TIMES!!! I just felt different and I knew I was, I had strange symptoms such as feeling really angry and I had diarrhoea, aching lower back and then the sore boobs kicked in, nausea didn't start till week 8!! So I persisted with testing and there it was on test 6 BFP! "Pregnant" I just couldn't believe it as like others I believed you got the nausea and sore boobs straight away and no AF, but this isn't always the case! I guess what I'm trying to say is making a baby is magic and they all come along in their very own and magical way, FX for all xxx

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 09:49

Back ache has started this morning (not a normal PMS symptom for me) no AF and still not pregnant according to test. So, I've cancelled today's exercise class but still doing my personal training session. In fact, my trainer is going to give me a Clear blue test to use on Friday as she has some spares! So....until AF turns up I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

PurpleGeekyGirl · 14/08/2013 09:56

Hope everyone is having a lovely sunny Wednesday like it is up here! I saw my gp today about ttc for a year and also increasingly painful periods. Have a blood test tomorrow and she's referring me for a scan and then maybe chlomid if my eggs aren't good quality etc. feels good to finally discuss it with them.

Af due today but no sign. Had a bfn last night as I was in so much pain I wanted to rule out an ectopic pg and also see if I could take ibruprofen along with codeine (which did nothing to touch the pain ConfusedConfusedShockHmm)

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 09:59

Purple - sorry you're in such pain. Hope all goes well with tests etc.

Springtime26 · 14/08/2013 10:01

I read somewhere that cb digital aren't as accurate as superdrug ones?is this true or am I clutching at straws.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 10:05

We've got a lot of people needing some tlc on this bus at the moment, it seems! :(

spring - I heard Superdrug ones are very accurate, that's all I know.

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 10:06

I used Superdrug this morning. Got negative but said on the FAQs to try again when 3 days late and if still negative and no AF to go to the doctor. They say there 99% accurate but reading the leaflet properly I think that means you're only 1% likely to get a false positive.
I believe 'false' negatives are more likely than that - certainly that seems to be the case reading on here although of course the plural of anecdote isn't data.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 10:08

It's not possible to get a false positive but it's very possible to get a false negative.

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 10:09

So does the 99% accurate thing just allow for chemical pregnancies then. I'm struggling to understand the statistics.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 10:12

Perhaps with that particular brand, it's only 1% possible to get a false negative. The reason it's impossible to get a false positive is because they pick up on hcg in the urine, which is only there if someone is pregnant.

snoozysleeper · 14/08/2013 10:17

Hi englishteacher and vjones hope this helps, it's from babymed.com

Q: What does it mean when manufacturers claim their home pregnancy test HPT is 99% accurate?

A: Manufacturers of home pregnancy tests (HPT) often claim their tests have a 99% accuracy but they frequently do not explain exactly what it means.

It has nothing to do with how likely your pregnancy test will be positive when you miss your period or whether a negative test means you are not pregnant.

The reason for this strange product claim relates to an arcane and old-fashioned Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulation related to a comparison of the test in urine with added hCG in the laboratory.

The manufacturer needs only to demonstrate that its test results, the result of a home pregnancy test, and using a nonpregnant woman's urine supplemented
with commercial hCG, agree with those of an existing test more than 99% of the time. So 99% means how likely is it that the home pregnancy test made by this manufactures shows a positive results when it's testing a nonpregnant woman's urine mixed with a certain amount of hCG.

With todays' products which are more sensitive than previous ones you would expect the HPT to be positive in the laboratory when it tests an artificially pregnant urine.
But the 99% sensitivity has little to do with the actual urine or the question whether it will be positive early on.

From: First Response Pregnancy Test:
"FIRST RESPONSE® is over 99% accurate at detecting typical pregnancy hormone levels from the day of your expected period.2"
"2 However, some pregnant women may not have detectable amounts of pregnancy hormone in their urine on the first day of the missed period or may have miscalculated the first day of their period."

From: ClearBlue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test
"The test is over 99% accurate from the day of your expected period?"
"The Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test gives you results 5 days sooner?
99% accurate at detecting typical hormone levels. Note that hormone levels vary. See product insert."
"The Clearblue Easy Pregnancy Test is over 99% accurate from the day of your expected period?"
"The Clearblue Easy Digital Pregnancy Test gives you results 4 days sooner?"

? 99% accurate at detecting typical hormone levels. Note that hormone levels vary. See product insert.
? Clearblue Easy can be used as early at 4 days before you expect your period. That's 5 days sooner than waiting until you miss your period to test. The amount of pregnancy hormone increases rapidly in early pregnancy. In clinical testing with early pregnancy samples, Clearblue Easy gave the following results. 51% of pregnant women get results 5 days sooner. 82% get results 4 days sooner. 90% get results 3 days sooner, 95% get results 2 days sooner.
? Clearblue Easy can be used as early at 3 days before you expect your period. That's 4 days sooner than waiting until you miss your period to test. The amount of pregnancy hormone increases rapidly in early pregnancy. In clinical testing with early pregnancy samples, Clearblue Easy gave the following results. 55% of pregnant women get results 4 days sooner. 87% get results 3 days sooner. 92% get results 2 days sooner.

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 10:18

But surely it's possible for a test to be faulty?
I know, for example, it's possible to get false positives on the HIV test (awful but true).
Like many Arts grads I find stats confusing even after reading Ben Goldacre's Bad Science.
Also, surely the accuracy varies depending on 'how' pregnant you are? I confused myself yesterday by reading Amazon feedback on pregnancy tests. Just about every brand had half the feedback going - yup they're fab and the other being rubbish don't waste your money wish I could give negative feedback.
I really should just stop over thinking and relax - then maybe AF will make a late visit!

BlueC2 · 14/08/2013 10:18

Can I tentatively dip a toe in here please? So we've started TTC for #2, DS1 is 14mo and I am still BF twice a day (morning and evening)...doc says I should stop but DS shows now intention of stopping at the moment and I am quite happy to continue. About half way through this cycle we decided we'd wait another cycle before really going for it with TTC as a March due date seemed a little scary soon and my work has been so so hectic and stressful I just needed to get through that. My cycles had gone nicely back to a regular 28 days...but we're now day 30 and no AF Shock and neg test result this morning!! I'm feeling fairly calm except for the blind panic that it's going to be an MMC which we had first time around and didn't find out until 12w scan, with DS I got BFP before AF even due, but with MMC it was a week after AF due that I got the BFP but just impatient to know eitherway! Not wanting to stress DH out so thought I'd come chat to you lovely MN ladies instead! I work from home soooo plenty of time for my brain to be doing somersaults! I'll go back and read upthread now Blush

Beautifulboy1 · 14/08/2013 10:20

It is a legal loop hole, in some rare cases pregnancy may not show due to a manufacturing fault of some sort or human error. If they wrote 100% accurate in the box, and then you were 6 MONTHS pregnant and it didn't show, they can be sued for miss selling, I know this as I has to call trading standards once as I'm a retail manager and they used the 99% accurate stat as an example to me

BlueC2 · 14/08/2013 10:27

I'm a bit of a silly sausage...meant April in post above, not March! Blush

Anyway...I digress...so sorry to hear of those having v tough times at the moment! TTC is such a rollercoaster!

purple I had v v bad pains yesterday which I'm now wondering whether they could've been implantation - any chance your pains could've been that...not sure how bad the pain for that can actually get?

englishteacher worth trying another brand or waiting a couple of days. I always have some of the cheapy dip test type tests which I buy in bulk from amazon so I can test to my hearts content without DH moaning about how much I spend on tests but they're quite good early on and you can then follow up with a digi one which tells you how many weeks etc

spring I have also heard that superdrug ones are good...but alas the easiest way is just to wait for a few days and test again...not easy I know!!!

beautifulboy I am clutching on to the fact that each pregnancy is different and that's why (if I am) it won't necessarily follow the same pattern of whem I got my bfp for DS or when I did for the MMC loss either.

Ho hum....really ought to do some work...

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 10:31

Hi Blue, thanks for the cream tea! You join us at a tentative time!

englishteacher78 · 14/08/2013 10:31

Mmmm scones with jam and cream - lovely. Banned in our house at the moment though. Getting a different brand today and going to try and not test until Friday morning now doubt I'll manage it though

PurpleGeekyGirl · 14/08/2013 10:36

Thanks guys. Who knows what my body is up to...! I had bad af pains at 6-7dpo which I usually get and then nothing for a few days and then I get af pains again the day or two before I come on. It's been different this cycle to previous and my boobs are much sorer than normal but am sure the witch is on her way. I'm on cd 24 of a 21-29 day cycle so keeping my fx in vain just wish it wasn't so painful. At least the scan will show if there are any issues with my lady bits anyway and we can take it from there.

Good luck to everyone else xx

Monstamio · 14/08/2013 10:58

The sensitivity of the test is what determines how early it will detect pregnancy. Most Clearblue tests are 25miu/ml whereas superdrug and internet cheapies are 10miu/ml.

The lower the number the better as they pick up lower amounts of HcG (the pregnancy hormone!) in your urine so it's something to check when choosing your test. BUT this is all still subject to your own unique cycle. You might not present very much HcG in your urine even when you get to the day of AF so would get a false negative. Whereas other people show up three or four days early. I do know that the levels of HcG double every day, which is why you are advised to wait 24 hours and retest if you get what you think is a false negative.

False positives don't happen unless you mess up the test (ie pee on the test window etc) or they are very faulty.

Blood tests are even more sensitive, but I think most GPs are reluctant to give them as the HPTs are so good nowadays.

VJONES1985 · 14/08/2013 11:31

Okay, this is totally TMI but am wondering about cervical mucus. I haven't had much and often have nothing on the toilet paper,so to speak. But today when I'm just sitting here or walking about, it all feels a bit sticky and moist downstairs. I'm so sorry for TMI but does that mean anything at all??

gillywillywoo · 14/08/2013 11:36

Vjones personally is suggest sticking a clean finger up there an having a feel around and see what comes out.. That's what I've resorted to doing and it's the only way I can tell what's going on with my CM. I'm now starting to see how my CM becomes more fertile and EWCM in the days leading up to positive OPK.
