Getting Ready for Conception - GP visit

Hello,
I have been reading through the info on the site about getting ready for conception. The section on this link about "trying for a baby" and visiting the GP was interesting
( www.mumsnet.com/conception/preconception#Trying_for_a_baby )

We recently went to see the GP and none of the tests were suggested or made available. My Wife specifically asked for some of the tests, but the GP said either "no", "I don't know what you're talking about" or "we don't offer that".
My Wife just wants to be sure she's all OK before we start trying.
Should we go back and "push it"? Is my Wife's age a factor - she's 22?

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

It isn't standard to be having tests before you have tried to conceive for a year. They will just assume everything is fine.

Your wife won't be offered a cervical smear because the screening programme only starts at age 25.

You can both get STI screening at your local sexual health clinic - it's free on demand.

Toxoplasmosis screening is not routine in this country. She should be able to have a test to check for immunity to rubella if she wants one, but they test your immunity when you get pregnant anyway.

If your wife is otherwise healthy the GP just expects you to get on with it in the traditional manner! A whole battery of preconception testing on healthy people is not necessary.

Good luck!

Essentially, everything Kat said - I've conceived 3 times & never bothered with any pre-conception tests/GP appointments.

I'd just recommend taking folic acid & shagging as a way to make sure have a baby. All the other tests are done if necessary later on.
