CLOMID first timer....

I can't seem to find any clomid threads that are active, so thought I would start this one.

Currently just finished taking my last tablet (50mg) on my first month of clomid, I'm very excited & nervous at the same time.

So many things going on in my head, no one to really talk to, symptoms are a bitch (but must mean something is working if I have symptoms yeah?!) Confused

has anyone taken clomid without being monitored? My consultant isn't going to scan me to check on follicles, I just have to go back to see her in 3 weeks (not sure what for?) Blush

Really hoping this works! Hmm

But if anyone wants to join me on a clomid ride, share info or success stories, feel free to...... Smile

Hi Golden - goodness, that is really perplexing. I'm afraid I don't have any suggestions about that. Could you ask the fertility nurse? I have rung mine up with a few questions and she has been great.

I hope that the clomid gets you ovulating though and that you are getting on well with it so far. Are you having scans?

goldengirl71 · 12/10/2012 22:09

More info:

Clomid, an oral fertility drug, is typically started at a 50 milligram (mg) dosage, and your fertility doctor will determine whether this dosage is helping you to ovulate. If you are not ovulating, your fertility doctor will increase the dosage incrementally.

Your fertility doctor will use the lowest dose of Clomid that is sufficient to induce ovulation for at least four to six cycles. Clomid will induce ovulation in about 80 percent of properly selected patients, according to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine?s Medications for Inducing Ovulation. Approximately 40 to 45 percent of women will become pregnant within six cycles after receiving Clomid. If a couple has no other fertility issues, their odds of getting pregnant when using Clomid can range from 10 percent to 20 percent, similar to a fertile couple trying on their own.

Women who have very low estrogen levels, irregular or absent ovulation due to a hypothalmic disorder, or who are obese have less chance of success on Clomid. (For obese women, losing weight may increase the chances of success.) After six cycles of Clomid, the chances for success decrease significantly, and experts recommend moving to an alternative, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF).

goldengirl71 · 12/10/2012 22:14

Cystersledge, we crossed posts. Yes, I'm having my first scan on the 22nd (cd14). I'm trying very hard not to view Clomid as a magic pill guaranteed to get me a baby but it's not easy staying cool.

I hope we can keep this thread moving with plenty of input so none of us become discouraged. It's a lonely process at times, isn't it, trying to conceive?

Annalou84 · 12/10/2012 23:02

Goldengirl72 - I'm 28 and no previous children. Partner checked 3 times results came back all ok so that's reassuring to know its just me with the problems and not both of us.

Cystersledge - that's good to know that you didn't wait long once you had been referred puts me at ease.

I just think its strange how depending on different gp or locations etc everyone gets offered something different. Me and my husband are not telling anyone that we are taking clomid or even trying for a baby as I think it puts pressure on you as everyone expects it to happen straight away, so it's refreshing to be able to chat to people who are going through the same treatments as me as no one assumes there will ever be a problem when you start trying for a family.

Goldengirl71, cystersledge have you had any side effects whilst taking clomid? And good luck to you both on your current cycles :)

goldengirl71 · 13/10/2012 09:53

Annalou, it's worth bearing in mind that, in the field of medicine, it's not where you live that matters but how loud you shout.

I've had no side effects whatsoever from Clomid so far - I'm on the fourth tablet today.

Annalou84 · 14/10/2012 10:49

I'm on count down only 4 more days till my first tablet. I went out yesterday and bout some ovulation tests and some early detection pregnancy test. I feel excited but at the same time I don't want to build myself up for something that might not happen, I'm keeping everything crossed :)

goldengirl71 · 14/10/2012 15:26

Annalou, be careful with OPKs now you are on Clomid. This medication hugely boosts levels of LH which will give positive readings on OPKs almost immediately after taking it. Have you read this thread from the beginning? Do try as you will see lots of women getting excited about positive OPKs only to ovulate ages after. Also be prepared for longer-than-usual luteal phases. This thread is full of women POAS after their usual luteal phase has passed, only to be devastated when they get a BFN and AF arrives on 17DPO Sad

goldengirl71 · 14/10/2012 15:28

As for me...today I have completed my first ever Clomid cycle! My scan is next Monday (CD14) Smile

Annalou84 · 14/10/2012 16:49

I'm a little confused. If the tests are saying I'm ovulating then surly I am and how will I know if it's a true ovulation or not???

Annalou84 · 14/10/2012 18:31

Forgot to ask is anyone taking folic Acid whilst on clomid????

goldengirl71 · 14/10/2012 18:57

Annalou, you need to research Clomid on the internet as it sounds as though you are unsure how it works regarding ovulation. Clomid boosts LH in great amounts in order to encourage the growth of follicles and in turn, promote ovulation. Hence, the presence of LH in your urine whilst taking Clomid may not indicate that ovulation is imminent. In order to ensure you're covering all bases the best thing you can do to optimise your chances of conception is to have sex every other day from the end of your period.

Definitely 'yes!' to folic acid.

Merida · 15/10/2012 14:26

Just wanted to add a success story. We'd been TTC for nearly three years, in which time my SIL and step sis had got pregnant at 20 and 21 by accident.
We had every test going, and there really can be few things more frustrating than being told that 'it's good news, the XY or Z test came back clear'. I almost wanted there to be something wrong as then we'd have a chance of fixing it (crazy).

Anyway, the fertility nurse started me on Clomid and a couple of weeks later I puked up all my dinner (sorry, probs TMI!) Thought I'd just eaten something dodgy and went off to bed. Got up in the morning and was ill again. Checked my dates and did a test. Got a lovely BFP and presented it to DH as the best birthday present he could've hoped for.

I'm convinced that the reason we succeeded wasn't the Clomid, but was the fact that I'd become so downtrodden by it all that I kind of accepted it wasn't going to happen and stopped getting my hopes up.

Anyway, good luck to all, really hope it works for you.

goldengirl71 · 15/10/2012 15:07

Merida, it's very kind of you to come on here and offer your encouraging story. Thank you. May I ask how old you were when you got pregnant?

Rachel184 · 15/10/2012 19:07

Hi all,

I'm new to the site and am not down with all the lingo yet so please bare with me :)

Had my HSG scan & got the all clear and will be on Clomid in my next cycle!! Been trying for a baby for 2 years now following a miscarriage which broke our hearts. So excited to start taking it and really don't mind what side effects it gives me as long as it gives me the baby who we so desperately want.

I have to be honest though at the moment I'm so tense I could burst. Anyone else experiencing this? I'm worried its gonna hinder my chances more.

It's really lovely reading the positive stories on here, it's made me feel hopeful for the first time in a long time!

Good luck to us all xxx

Rachel184 · 15/10/2012 19:12

And p.s. Merida I laughed at the puking over your dinner and completely empathise with the down trodden feeling that's how we have been feeling for a while now. Hoping the Clomid is the magic pill for us :)

goldengirl71 · 16/10/2012 00:07

Rachel, hello and welcome Thanks. I've just finished my first ever Clomid cycle yesterday and today have been very weepy. Just feeling so downhearted about the whole ttc business. I am so tired of the whole emotional baggage we're carrying around with trying to get pregnant. I'm 41 with no kids. I fell pregnant in January after only 2 months of trying but had a missed miscarriage (mmc) at the 11 week scan. In the seven months since we haven't had a whiff of pregnancy despite charting my temps and having plenty of well-timed sex. I'm not worried about Clomid making things worse...what could be worse than another year of this??

Youio · 16/10/2012 12:15

Hi,
I just got my period yesterday. It was a heavy period :(.
My doctor asked me to increase dose of clomid for this 2nd cycle from 25 gr to 75 gr for day 3-5. Finger crossed for that.
Is anyone use any amoxil to help produce mucus? As the clomid effect made the area down there dry.

What do you think guys?

mumalah · 16/10/2012 22:02

Hi, I'm new ! I am on my first cycle of clomid, due to not ovulating on my own. I had a scan on day 12 which showed a tiny follicle on one ovary( wasn't told measurement) I am now on day 13. Apart from a few pains , no other side effects ! I did however feel really dizzy when finished course for two days, has anyone else had this ? Going for another scan and blood test next weds.

goldengirl71 · 16/10/2012 22:16

Youio, sorry your period arrived. I didn't know they did a 25mg of Clomid - what a low dose! Better luck with 75mg Smile Try Pre-Seed - it mimics the egg white cervical mucus which nurtures the sperm whilst it awaits the egg to be released.

Mumalah, good luck to you, too. I felt a little dizzy for just a few moments today (just finished my first cycle of Clomid) and have had a headache all day which I can't shift. Other than this I have experienced no ill effects from this drug. I do hope it works. Can anyone explain to me how Clomid works for women like me who are already ovulating?

mumalah · 17/10/2012 08:08

goldengirl71 I think it can strengthen ovulation and lengthens the luteal phase, and encourage bigger, healthier eggs.

I'm not using opk's as I found they came up positive, even though blood test showed I was not ovulating on my own.

Annalou84 · 17/10/2012 13:04

Had a set back this weekend, I pulled my back I'm now taking every painkiller known to man. I'm due to start my first cycle of clomid tomorrow but not sure if I can with the painkillers? Just waiting for my doctor to confirm I will be gutted if we can't go ahead with this cycle :(

photographerlady · 17/10/2012 13:12

Hi everyone. Found this thread and wondering if I could follow along. I just finished my first round of clomid cd 2-6, today however day 7 with no pill I feel rough. I was only prescribed three cycles last week without much info. I have a story that still confuses me but here I am.

So hello! I am 30 TTC #1 after two yrs of trying. Been in NHS referral for a year but was told my DH had a low sperm count and I was normal, they dismissed us and said IVF was our only option (self funded to boot). We asked for another test for my DH and went back three months later. Told the first test was wrong, he's sperm is fine and I have pcos. I was given clomid which I started Friday.

So after six months we gone from saving for IVF to TTCing with clomid. So here I am getting my head on straight and reading your thread :)

cystersledge · 17/10/2012 20:46

Wow Photographer, that sounds like a right rollercoaster.

There are lots of us taking clomid - I wish that none of us had to, but it is kind of reassuring if you know what I mean. Strength in numbers!

I'm on day 9 now... so I've taken all the tablets and am now crossing my fingers that they are doing their job.

goldengirl71 · 17/10/2012 22:23

Thanks for your reply, Mumalah. I'm sorry but I do believe it's a fallacy that Clomid improves the quality of eggs - the science certainly doesn't back this up. What it does do is enourage ovulation. But at my age (41) I want egg quality improvement!

Photo, I wish you much luck with the Clomid.

Cyster, I'm on CD9 too! We can be cycle buddies!

Anyone prepared to share their timing-of-intercourse plans for this month? I'm going to DTD on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday morning (ovulation day, I hope).

goldengirl71 · 17/10/2012 22:25

Annalou, take the Clomid!!
