Evening all

Thanks for the reassurance/advice, all cramps have gone now and I have had normal movement today so that's a big phew.

wombat it's good you listened to your body and it could just be you are not 100% today and so the little one is a bit sleepy too. I agree though, wish there was a way to tell for sure.

sparkly have you considered one of those belt thing-ys that are meant to support back/bump or something. I've seen them highly recommended.

harassed can you never eat chocolate or just when pg? What a nightmare for you.

I got mince pies from the supermarket today, not too early to have them hot with double cream is it?

yellowtomato · 18/10/2011 21:12

Forgot to say wombat please do share!

Wormshuffler · 18/10/2011 21:26

Grin sparkles and don't mock the nipple tweaking, it really works!!

wellieboots · 19/10/2011 11:50

Hello ladies :)

This is the new optimistic me checking in - back on my folate and iodine pill ( Confused - they recommend iodine here, makes the baby brainy or something, I dunno), our couple of months off so that we know we can get back home in June for my grandma's 80th :o is coming to an end, and having spoken to the specialist the other week, we have decided to have lots of fun and plenty of SWI for the next 6 months, and not think about assisted options unless nothing happens after that time. We are feeling quite hopeful and like we have a plan :)

harassed and worm boo to the sore pelvis, hope you are bearing up ok xxx

sorry you've had worries yellow and wombat, hope you are calmer now, thinking of you xx

waves to everyone else - have great weeks :)

yellowtomato · 19/10/2011 14:30

Did someone say 'nipple tweaking' What does that do then?

wombatinwaiting · 20/10/2011 06:08

Waves madly to wellie - great to hear from you and how fab that you have a plan that you're feeling so optimistic about - we will be sending many positive vibes across the oceans to assist in miniwelliemaking and we're getting closer to that magic 1000 post mark so you can start the next thread which, is scientifically proven to produce a bfp Grin

I have hear that nipple tweaking can bring on labour yellow but according to some books, should be used with caution in the later weeks - I think you can still enjoy your nipple clamps for now Grin - oh, sorry, I had you confused there with worm for a while.....! hee hee.

Had to Grin at sparkly's comments on our naivety and the kindness being shown by worm and harassed.... we watched a discovery science programme last night on birth that made my rose tinted glasses a little clearer - all 3 women featured had epidurals and the look on one woman's face as she cleared the shoulders had me wincing like anything!

Re: the hormones- there are 3 main ones at play during labour - oxytocin, adrenaline and endorphins. The trick is to keep the levels of oxytocin up (as this is what makes the contractions) and also to keep the endorphins up (as these are natural pain relievers). Keep the adrenaline down as this will "take over" from the other two and therefore can slow down or even temporarily stop the labour and suppress your natural pain killers. Tricks to keeping adrenaline low are to normalise things as much as possible e.g. wear an old familiar nightie, take in your own pillow from home and what kept getting hammered home was to stay at home as long as possible (I think this is more relevant here as they like to medicalise things quickly here so you could end up with all sorts of interventions before you can say "but Ina May says....." Tensing up against the contractions will also raise adrenaline levels so we should "welcome" them as much as possible. My midwife friend said that pound for pound, the uterus at full term is the most powerful muscle in the body and to harness the power of that muscle and when pushing time comes, aim for 3 big pushes during one contraction and rest properly in between.

Hope this helps a little..... 5 weeks today for me and counting - gulp!

Ooh harassed - have been meaning to ask you as guru of all things alternative therapy related. I was getting really fed up of the smell of bio oil so used some yummy Burt's Bees mum to be oil instead that was grapefruit and something that was divine but ran out of that (it was a pressie from sis in law from UK) and so have gone onto using Boots organics range Jojoba oil - also nice smell - do you think jojoba is ok? I think it lists rose and geranium too. I hope so as apart from anything else, it's a third of the price of bio oil!

Waves to all! xx

wombatinwaiting · 20/10/2011 06:09

P.S. Glad to hear the pains have stopped yellow.

Wormshuffler · 20/10/2011 08:12

Just a quicky hello all wave .
When I was 5 days overdue with ds I went to bed after reading googles advice about nip tweaking so did it for about 5 mins them boom contractions !
Then when they stopped at the hosp I did it again and boom again!
In hindsight I wish I had done it in the morning as 17 hours later and fully dilated I still ended up with a cs.

harassedandherbug · 20/10/2011 10:54

You'll all be fine! As if Worm and I would keep anything from you....[hhmm]. It can't be that bad or we wouldn't be doing it again!

I tried nipple tweaking with dd as she was over due, and I did get lots of braxton hicks but nothing else really. She's still always running behind 5yrs later and lucky to be alive after this morning.

Did any of you see the thread about dtd in labour?!! I'll see if I can find it....

sparkly sounds like dh should be massaging your back now!! If you have a bit of a feel yourself, that are two quite hollow spots either side of your spine and just above hip/pelvis area. A good wiggle with his fists in there will really help now, and get him to remember that for labour too!! I think I might have a massage "routine" at home, will have a look.

yellow sorry, totally forgot about the hypnobirthing links, these are the ones I've got.
I can normally eat chocolate (for England!), just it gives me really bad heartburn now! Unlike custard tarts which are current craving Grin. Glad the pains have gone, I'm sure it's just stretching, but they freak me out too if that helps. We had mince pies at the weekend.... yum!

wellie lovely to hear you sounding so positive!! And sounds like a good plan. Not heard about the iodine before, sounds interesting though x

wombat jojoba is fine to use, but rose should only be used after 6mths preg as it is an emmenagogue (induces menstruation) and then diluted. Geranium is generally ok after 6mths, but not recommended if there's a history of mc! So you might want to stop using your oil...... This link gives a comprehensive list of oils to avoid, and this one some ideas. Maybe blend your own? It's really easy, I can help with that.

Not too bad here, just bloody sore. Not sure how long I'm going to be able to stay at work tbh, especially as it means I can't do anything in the evenings so far. Had yoga last night and the class teacher (one of our mw's) said I should just give up..... I've got too much to do though and still no replacement!!!

wombatinwaiting · 20/10/2011 12:32

Wow - that's really helpful - thank you v much harassed - have you thought about making money out of all this wonderful knowledge you have? How many weeks are you now and when are you thinking of giving up work? Please do try and take it a wee bit easy when you can x

harassedandherbug · 20/10/2011 13:00

Despite working in engineering I'm actually a qualified massage therapist! I'm just re-doing my course at home to update my qualifications, just in case Wink. I did the Aromatherapy course, but didn't take the final exam as I was preg with dd and they weren't happy for me to mix & massage with gloves on and I didn't want to be exposed to anything that could harm dd. I also do Reiki and am doing another at home course in Auricular therapy which is a bit like acupuncture but on the ear and without needles!

I'm 31 weeks today! Was planning to give up at 37 weeks, but am re-assessing that lol. I've still got a weeks holiday left too. Will see how it goes x

Wormshuffler · 21/10/2011 07:12

Well hello there my lovely Ladies, how the devil are we today?

Working until 37 weeks harassed !! blimey! I am off next week for half term, then only back for 3 weeks pricisely 12 shifts left! I will be 33 weeks ish. I wanted 6 weeks off before the CS date. So if you were me you would only have a fortnight left!! I love how you have found a healing chocolate!
My pelvis has thankfully fixed itself for the time being.

You guys are all so well informed! it is seriously impressive. When I had my first aged 24 I didn't research a thing! just bumbled along blindly!! I honestly didn't have a clue what I was doing. You ladies already know far more than me and you havn't even given birth yet. So no I am not keeping anything from you sparkly Wink

Glad to hear from you wellie, wombat is right it's almost time for you to name the new thread, so get your thinking cap on Grin

So I had my 28 week appointment yesterday and bump is measuring 2 weeks bigger than it should Confused it is just on the 90th centile line and apparently if it goes over that I will be refered for a consultant appointment and scan. Next time they check though I will be 34 weeks, and due to see the consultant 2 weeks later for booking the section.
I am praying she has just measured wrong! as 2 weeks earlier than DD is boxing day!!! or does it just mean it will be a bigger baby?? sounds like even more of an excuse to get that 4d scan to me.

Can you remember ages ago I asked for advise on what to do with my hall floor? Well I had a disaster! DH sanded it all down to remove all the old varnish and the plan was to use a lovely darker wood dye called jacobean oak and then a matt clear varnish on the top.
Well once it was all sanded and I put the dye on it didn't take all over and had orangey patches all over it where there must still be some old varnish. It looks truely awful! So now I have primed it and am going to paint it today.
it is too long to carpet at 5 and a half mtrs it would cost a bomb! Wish me luck!!

yellowtomato · 21/10/2011 08:45

Morning all

I've bought a selection of pastries to keep us going....I'm really liking those with white icing on at the moment...not sure what they are called but there is a lemony one that has a sort of swirly pattern with raisins and icing....yum yum...dreamy.....right where was I?

harassed thanks for all the info......really useful. My advice (for what it's worth) is that your health is more important than any sort of loyalty to a job where the boss seems to be a bit of an arse unsympathetic

worm I'm not sure how accurate all this measuring business is....try not to worry and let's just hope it'll all be fine. I've heard lots of stories of the measurements being totally off even by as much as 2llbs! Hope the hall situation works out...don't have any advice, I'm lost with that kind of thing but I'm hoping for the best for you!

i had my midwife appt yesterday, the third midwife I've seen so far but she seems v nice. Apparently it'll be her to the end.......I measured 24cm which as I'm 25 weeks is fine....heartbeat all good etc. I'm still undecided on the flu jab but I think I'm more against than for....it's so difficult to know. Midwife said I should but I knew she'd say that. i also asked about the birthing centre ie if it was likely to be full on the day and she said most people opt for an epidural so the centre and esp the birthing pool are very under used. It is more likely that the labour ward will be full. so that reassured me a bit.

I've found a lovely new tea, lemon and ginger. It's lovely and warming and feels to me like something that will ward off colds [deluded emotions]

happy friday everyone!

harassedandherbug · 21/10/2011 09:35

Morning!!

A chilly one here! Dd was most impressed to see snowflakes on the cars computer-y thing until I pointed out it only meant it was cold and that 3ft of snow was imminent thank goodness.

worm I measured 3 wks ahead at a similar stage. Had consultant a week later and his junior (not sure what her title was!) who did all the standard checks measured me 5 weeks ahead!!! Then the mw did it and got 3wks again. Was measured a couple of weeks ago when I had a really bad headache and was spot on. So obviously just a growth spurt. It's sooo inaccurate, as are growth scans. Good luck with the floor, sounds a nightmare!!

yellow mmm cake! I'm obsessed with custard - custard tarts and custard danishes..... Glad mw went well. I had my flu jab on Wednesday. Personally, I had to. I still blame the flu and not being able to control my temp with just paracetamol for my mmc last January. They said the baby died at 7wks which is exactly when I had the flu. I've been a bit paranoid about germs tbh, but feel a tad better having had the jab.

wellie yes wombat is right, you're have to start the next thread Grin.

I had chiro last night. Well not really chiro as she doesn't manipulate me, but two weird treatments!! Firstly with tuning forks, which makes bug wriggle like mad, but they change tone significantly when they get to my sore pelvis and then Cranial Laser Therapy. Had the crappiest nights sleep, I literally saw every hour but wouldn't get out of my cosy bed, and it's agony but hoping it'll settle down and I'll get a good improvement. I'd better do at £25 for 15mins.....

Wormshuffler · 21/10/2011 12:03

Hello again
I just thought I would share this link that the midwife gave me about breastfeeding.
It is a series of videos that follow 4 ladies as they prepare for and then breastfeed. Really good! The videos are listed down the left hand side.

Wormshuffler · 24/10/2011 06:07

I killed the thread :(
Can I tempt you all back in with philly bagels?

Have you been to look at the birthing centre yellow? the one here is lovely, the only downside being it is strictly midwife only run, any complications and it is a 40 minute ambulance ride to the consultant led unit. If yours is closer than that I say go for it. Unfortunately for me it's not an option being that I have to have a section......

harassed £25 for 15 mins...........£100 per hour, nice work if you can get it! Maybe you should set up in competition after your ML and get away from your boss! How are they being with you now at work? Still hoping to make it until 37 weeks?

I have a 4d scan booked for saturday, so excited but nervous at the same time!

koolforcats · 24/10/2011 09:58

Ooh I'll be back later, but just wanted to grab a bagel while they're still warm, ta, worm Wink

yellowtomato · 24/10/2011 12:18

Hello worm

Hmm delicious, I'm soooo hungry. I haven't done the visit yet but they happen every week and you don't have to book so I'll probably go nearer the time. The MLU is just across the corridor from the labour ward so if you need help/epidural etc it's v easy. They also sometimes come and do it for you in the MLU if the labour ward is full. Also thanks for the bf link, I haven't looked at it yet but I think I want to try to be as prepared as possible. They also do a class at the hospital but wasn't sure if it was for before birth or after but the midwife said before so I might go to that in a few weeks. How exciting for a 4D scan, you'll have to let me know all about it......I think I'd like one but DP is against. I'm also planning to do another 'active birth course' I just don't feel that the hypnobirthing course prepared me enough, I think I need something a bit more practical.

harassed that doesn't sound expensive, hope it's working. I had apple crumble and custard at the weekend, yum yum yum.

I've finished reading Ina May, it really is an excellent book. It wasn't so much the birth stories I liked but the more practical stuff in the middle. I've told DP he has to read it.

So I'm 26 weeks today, start of third trimester. I was talking to someone and I said 'only 14 weeks to go' and then went 'OMG I'M HAVING A BABY IN 4 MONTHS' I think the person thought I was a bit odd but that does seem very soon. I know it's a lot sooner for some of you but I still haven't made the connection between bump, birth and actually having a baby. We haven't bought any stuff yet, it seems too soon. When did you guys start getting stuff?

I really am v hungry, what shall I have for lunch today?

Hope you ladies are all fine, pop by and say hello. Esp you wombat now you're a lady of leisure. And Mrsb33, did you get your phone fixed?

mrsb33 · 24/10/2011 12:52

OP posts:
yellowtomato · 24/10/2011 19:53

mrsb33!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! you're back........... Grin

Good to hear from you.......I have been following some of your tales on facebook.......so sorry that you've been suffering so much. For me the sickness started to get better around 14/15 weeks so hope that it is the same for you.
I'm not sure if I can remember where everyone is up to, maybe they can give you a summary when they pop in.

I am at 26 weeks today, feeling fine, I can't believe how quickly the time has gone. Only 14 weeks to go and I haven't bought anything yet. I have got quite a substantial belly now though. And am having a lot of strong movements which I'm really enjoying. I've been trying to prepare for birth with yoga and hypnobirthing

Hmm that's it for me.......hope you get your phone sorted soon so we can have more regular updates from you.

Sparklywine · 25/10/2011 08:49

Hi Mrsb33, welcome back! Flapjack?
Sorry you've been having such a difficult time of it hun. As an update, I am 33 weeks tomorrow, and have bought lots Grin Mostly cosy blankets from the White Company , but have a cot and moses basket, and decorated the nursery last weekend. It is Farrow and Ball, 'Borrowed Light', a lovely tranquil light blue.

True to form, dh cocked up the curtain pole which collapsed as soon as it saw the gingham curtains approaching; drilling is definitely his achilles heel! Monts is kicking away like mad, but it sort of doesn't seem real still - in about 7 weeks I shall be holding my son! Maybe because I'm still at work (have 4 weeks left ) I don't feel I have time to focus on forthcoming events. Mat leave should see me in a calmer, more reflective place hopefully the sofa.
I have been mostly preparing for birth by eating cake. Listened to my hypnobirthing CD at the weekend and panicked that I couldn't breathe like she was asking, hyperventilated, and then fell asleep. Not the greatest success.
Worm, thanks for the video clips, I shall have a look at home tomorrow as have the day off, 5-days weeks are too much now.
Oh, question! At night I have very itchy feet (not the soles, tops of toes mainly) and am rubbing away at them frantically. I've read about that cholast-thingy, should I be worried or is it just that my feet are reacting to cheap shoes and no socks (they can get a little senstive anyway)? Have no other symptoms (no swelling, nausea, itching elsewhere, reduced kicks) so don't feel too worried, but should I be ringing triage or something? Thanks!

wombatinwaiting · 25/10/2011 18:48

Aaaaaaaaaaaaggggggghh! Just wrote massive long post and bloody laptop ate it! Will try and remember it.

Big hellllloooooo to all and a huuuge welcome back to mrsb - congrats on reaching your 2nd trimester although sorry to hear about all the yukky symptoms - here's hoping you get to the blooming stage through.

Wow yellow - 26 weeks already - why is it other people's pgs seem to go much quicker than your own?! Your MLU sounds great - let us know what it's like when you go and visit. I would def recommend 3d/4d scan if pennies permit - apart from anything else, I;m sure your dd would like to see it in years to come.

And you're hot on my heels at 33 weeks sparkly - I'm just coming up 36 weeks. HAd to chuckle at your DH's drilling antics! Re: your itchy feet, if your next m/w appt is soon, I would prob wait untl then as you don't have the other symptoms as you say. THat is me though and not you! Farrow and Ball sounds lovely - rather upmarket, n'est ce pas?!

Thanks for the bagels worm and particularly those b/feeding vids - v good. How did your hallway turn out in the end?

How are things with you kool? Hope all is well.

I have to be honest and say that I have been avoiding mn for a few days. I've been having a fairly major meltdown over the last couple of days. I think not working has given me more time to think about the enormity of all this - that it's too late to back out Confused and all sorts of other irratiional things too. HAd a v good cry today and then wrote down a lot of these random thoughts and talked themt through with DH tonight which was very helpful. I really tho0ught I was going a bit mad earlier.... not quite up to 100% wombat normality but much better than I was. I think part of the problem is that people only seem to talk about the negatives - ooh, it's really hard, you'll never sleep again, your relationship wil change forever etc. and none of the positives - i.e. it's an amazing thing helping another tiny human grow, with the tears there will be a lot of fun too etc. I think I shall ask people to change the subject if they only have bad things to say in future. Enough for now!

Waves to all and leaves out the remainder of the jaffa cakes I have been scoffing x

Sparklywine · 26/10/2011 09:52

Aw, Wombat, sorry to hear you've been feeling down. It's not surprising, what we are embarking on is sooo enormous, yet also the most normal, grounding, natural thing in the world. I had a moment yesterday thinking that if Monts went to university and lived at home for that, then I would be over 60 before he moved out! In all honestly that did make me question momentarily if I'd done the right thing by me and dh, as we never saw children in our lives and now here they are about to take over until we were almost drawing a pension. I do worry slightly about not having endless indulgent long baths, and lie-ins, and tipsy nights, the house full of plastic tat and mud and wet towels and smelly socks, and dh forgetting all his training and becoming a boy again Grin

However, the best thing we ever did was get our cats, even though the house is full of mud and regurgitated cat biscuits and insects that creep and bite and rustly cat tunnels and half-chewed cosmic catnip bananas, and we never get a lie-in as they all pile on the bed to demand feeding at 6am; it's a delight, and also excellent preparation!
There was a good thread in Pregnancy I saw yesterday about why people felt the need to tell you your life would never be the same, and that pregnancy was a doddle compared to the years of suffering ahead, when actually this is nonsense. I already feel happier and more complete than ever in my life; tis scary growing up and realising almost the purpose of being Wombat! I am also convinced that, solid as dh and myself were before, this has deepened our bond beyond anything I could have imagined; even with a pair of lined gingham curtains on his head, falling plaster and rawl plugs raining down on him, I love him more than ever. You will be both be fine, you sound lovely and grounded and we're all really looking forward to meeting you and staying in your villa for a few weeks next year Grin Grin

wombatinwaiting · 26/10/2011 12:26

Aw sparkly -you are very good at saying the right thing at the right time - thank you very much and yes, you must all come and stay next year and bring the cats too! You're right - it is normal and natural and I think I may be over-thinking things too much. I saw that thread and posted on it! It was very good to read that others are feeling the same thing. I am feeling much better today after talking it through with DH and another friend here who is 3 weeks behind me and feeling similar things. Also helped that I had my first "nice" dream about our DC - it was a girl and at 1 day old she was already talking to me and very cute!

Wormshuffler · 26/10/2011 18:04

Hi ladies
I know exactly what you mean, when I was in late pg with dd 12 I actually wrote dh a dear john letter and buggered off! It wad all too much, I had horrible visions of being a single poor parent with teenagers ruining my life. So told him we may as well split now so I could get used to it! It was hormones combined with being on ml reading dramatic books and listening to the corrs!
Now I am the total opposite, and don't want the kid stage to ever end hense doing it all again!
Nice to see you again Mrsb.
