This should be clomid and IUI (for Katierocket) thread. Hoping this one will be luckier than the last - can't be any worse, don't think we had a single BFP did we?

Lots and lots and lots of luck to us all.

milesysgirl · 14/11/2005 18:22

and he said another 4 months on clomid scans and this hsg ? got to go back and see him in march hopefully be pregnant by then though its sounds so far of!

MeerkatsUnite · 14/11/2005 20:40

Hi Milesygirl,

A HSG is a tubal x-ray. Its a useful test to have done as it gives information not easily accessed by other methods. For instance any deformities inside the tubes can only be seen on x-ray.

A teaspoonful of special dye is inserted very slowly through your cervix and this passes into your uterus and tubes. Any blockages will be seen on the x-ray and the dye will not pass through there.

I was given my results there and then (tubes were described as patent - that's another term for open) but some people can wait a short time to get these.

There should not be any pain providing the procedure is done carefully and the dye is injected slowly.

I was given a couple of painkillers beforehand which helped a lot and can say that the fear of same was far worse than the reality. Sanitary protection should be given to you as a matter of course (that colourless dye does come out) but you could always bring along your own.

I wish you well with both this forthcoming test and the clomid courses.

Blimey - a lot has been going on since I last checked in! Meerkats, you have given me excellent information in the past and seem to be doing so again for others - can I be nosey and ask if you are in the medical profession - you seem to know so much!

gemma97 · 14/11/2005 21:56

Hi all,
Sorry to barge in here but just want to say that after a lap & dye, a failed procedure to pop the cysts on my ovaries, norethisterone (the pill- used to regulate my cycle) which made my ankles swell up like balloons and a spotty registrsr who said 'I can't help you with your ankles, I'm not an ankle doctor!!!!!!' and 4 cycles of clomid I am finally mummy to a beautiful dd.
I actually got pregnant 2 weeks after finally meeting my consultant for the first time (instead of one of his cronies) and I actually believe that he has magical powers!!!!(well, he did double the dose of the clomid....maybe that's it then....)
Anyway, stick with it girls. I'm rooting for you all!

MeerkatsUnite · 15/11/2005 07:08

Roobedoo,

No not medically trained at all but write from experience re the HSG. Its purpose was also explained to me as well.

With best wishes

Roobedoo · 20/11/2005 18:53

Hello all. Well, so much for being a medical marvel - it has just meant I've had two disappointments in one cycle rather than the usual one. To top it all, AF arrived a week early as well - but at least it saved me a week of am I/aren't I (whilst knowing that I wasn't but still secretly hoping - you all know how it is). Also, had a couple of hours thinking it was an implantation bleed as AF was completely unexpected as had none of the usual symptoms, but no, is def AF.

We've decided this is going to be our last go at clomid as it is obviously not working for us and besides, we want Christmas off! I'm going to ask to see a Consultant ASAP as we want to know if there is anything other than IUI/IVF available to us. Problem is, if it's a matter of an operation, I'm terrified of having a general and don't think I could unless it was for something life threatening, so that probably limits what I could have done. Blimey - I'm rambling now, sorry ladies. How are you all doing? Katierocket - are you starting your injections tomorrow? Good luck if so.

OP posts:
katierocket · 21/11/2005 10:10

hi
sorry to hear that roobee, I think you're probably doing the right thing, my consultant says he doesn'#t really like prescribing Clomid for longer that 3 months as it can be a bit depressing carrying on when it's not working. AF is due tomorrow /wednesday so then will start injections/run up to IUI.

MeerkatsUnite · 21/11/2005 12:23

Roobedoo,

Would advise you to ask him whether he considers you suitable to have ovarian diathermy surgery. This can have success with some PCOS patients.

Although IVF is an option for some PCOS patients it should only be tried when all other treatment avenues have failed. Also such women run a higher than average risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (due to the multiple cystic follicles associated with PCOS) so you should be carefully monitored.

HTH

Roobedoo · 21/11/2005 18:15

Katie, your Consultant is sensible. Feel like I've just been left to get on with it and no-one is looking at my track record, rather they just keep giving me more injections and more clomid without asking about ME.

Anyway, MKU what does the surgery you mention involve/do? Can it be done without a general anaesthetic?

OP posts:
MeerkatsUnite · 21/11/2005 20:32

Roobedoo,

This operation is always done under GA. Basically the surgeon punctures the cystic follicles on the ovaries with an electrical laser on needle. Sounds pretty much awful but it can and does work with some PCOS patients as it can lower excess LH levels in the bloodstream and thus kickstart ovulation. I conceived my son as a direct result of having this surgery.

This keyhole surgery op has a steep learning curve so I would ensure that the surgeon performing this op has done a lot of them beforehand.

It is NOT a cure for PCOS though, no one therapy or treatment will completely eradicate the cystic follicles. It however, may give a window of opportunity that was not previously there.

Although clomid is often the first line of treatment it is not suitable for all PCOS patients to take primarily because clomid can increase hormone levels. Some such women can become clomid resistant therefore in quite a short space of time.

I think a detailed discussion re your treatment and where's its all at is very much in order and I hope you will be able to put your points across to them. The three of you need to be able to communicate effectively and work as a team.

kiera · 21/11/2005 22:55

Hi everyone

I'm on my third round of clomid having had two clomid pregnancies before (one of which resulted in my son!). However my gyn says I can only have up to eight months of clomid in my lifetime (I ov with 50mg). I am really worried about this as this time it is taking longer we're on our 3rd month now and that only leaves 3 more tries and that's it! I'm sure I have heard of people taking it for longer, can anyone enlighten me??

Many thanks,

K

Roobedoo · 22/11/2005 12:30

Kiera - sorry, I don't know the answer. I'm allowed 4 doses this time but I don't know what the total amount in my lifetime would be.

MKU, thanks for that. I'm definitely going to arrange an appointment with my Consultant as we really need to know what our options are.

Have just started first cycle of clomid, but forgot to ask the consultant when and how often I should be ttc. Can anyone advise?
Thanks

Roobedoo · 23/11/2005 18:36

Sorry Fee, I don't know as I have injections to make me ovulate so know the exact day.

OP posts:
Roobedoo · 25/11/2005 10:24

Katierocket - how are the injections going? When do you have the IUI?

OP posts:
katierocket · 25/11/2005 15:24

hello roobee - today is day 2 so I went to clinic for blood test to measure FSH levels (last time there were slightly elevated) and scan. All was OK so I start the injections today and do them every day - go back on day 8 for further scans/blood test and take it from theree. IUI will probably be around day 13. eek. Am trying to be positive, not get too obsessed but not get my hopes up too much that it will work first time.

HOw are you?
Mileys/lunar ?

Loubie37 · 27/11/2005 16:08

Hi everyone

Sorr I've not been around for ages, I've been trying to stop being so obsessive about getting pregnant so have had a month off charting, forums, OPKs etc. Not that it worked really, I still thought about it all the time and I'm still not pregnant!

The good news though is that I finally ovulated last month!!!!! My progesterone level on day 21 was 42 - not brilliant, but more than double what it was the month before

I'm having a couple of months off Clomid now, so I can get Xmas/my wedding/honeymoon out of the way. We're still TTCing in that we're not using contaceptives, and if I do fall pregnant (unlikely without Clomid) I'll be over the moon naturally, but I won't be too upset if I'm not, cos if I was I'd only be paranoid that something will go wrong either just before the wedding or while we're away.

I'm looking really forward to starting again in January when we get back - now I know it works for me, it's given me an extra boost of enthusiasm.

Good luck to everyone else, I really hope you all get an extra special surprise for Christmas xx

katierocket · 27/11/2005 16:23

hi Loubie
Good to hear from you. You sound it good spirits. Didn't know you are getting married, congratulations. Where are you going on honeymoon?

Excellent news on the ovulating. Fingers crossed it will happen soon.

LunarSea · 27/11/2005 20:54

katie - just waiting for the days to tick by to start first cycle with 100mg of Clomid. Still ds was conceived in December, after years of trying unsuccesfully, so perhaps there's a good omen there? (This month would mean a due date almost exactly when ds statrts school though - but we'll cross that bridge if/when we come to it!)

Loubie37 · 28/11/2005 07:48

Hi Katierocket

We get married on 30th December - 4 weeks on Friday eeek! We're off to Sharm el Sheik on holiday, really looking forward to it, it should be nice and warm, even in January.

Thanks for the good wishes, hopefully we'll be bringing back more than a souvenir with us

xx

mincepee · 28/11/2005 21:17

Sorry for butting in like this.......

Can anyone explain what clomid assisted pregnancy is? Why do you take clomid?

I am not sure whether it is linked to what I have or not.

IN BRIEF:

I have had 5 m/c in 12 mths and have a possible diagnosis which is Luteal Phase Defect. I am being monitored by a couple of profs at a recurrent miscarraige clinic. I am currently taking progesterone supplements to try and sort this out.

Any info would be appreciated.

Loubie37 · 28/11/2005 21:53

Hi there, sorry to hear about all the heartache you've experienced, I can't imagine what it must be like to go through.

Clomid is usually prescribed for ovulatory problems, I don't ovulate very often for some unknown reason (probably down to my age ) so Clomid was prescribed to boost the hormones that make you ovulate.

Hope this helps and good luck xx
