Best excuses for not drinking

I'm not sure if this should go in conception or pregnancy, but I wondered if you are ttc or in early pregnancy and you don't want to tell friends yet, what excuses have you used / are you using for not joining in drinking alcohol.

I'm in the tww and have a few functions coming up, and also have a planned holiday with friends when I might be in early pregnancy. They are used to seeing me drink, so I need some good excuses. What are your best, credible (or otherwise!) excuses?

Dieting? You are having your teeth whitened so you aren't allowed to drink red wine?? Hangover? Your dh is on a diet and you are trying to be supportive.....erm...throwing it in pot plant....

As soon as a woman says she is not drinking everyone seems to think they are pregnant so you are bound to be asked. So you need to be armed and ready for that too!

I'm in recovery

I'm on codeine based painkillers for my back

I've converted to Islam

I've got the clap and have been prescribed metronidazole (one of the few antibiotics for which alcohol is contraindicated- unfortunately common uses include treatment of STDs)

I bet someone £1000 I can stay off alcohol for a month and I cant afford to lose.

I am driving.

I am detoxing.

I AM drinking, This is a gin and tonic (waves tonic with ice and a slice in air) but I'm trying to cut down so can you get me a diet coke*

*insert preferred soft drink.

I have been drinking solidly for the last 15 years so I thought it was about time I gave my body a rest and have given up for 3 months.

You are recovering from a tummy bug/hangover- try to boak a little at the sight/smell of others alcoholic drinks for added authenticity.

You have an early meeting/early flight the next day.

Read a good one here about the DH swap- you have whoever's round it is order you a gin and tocnic and your DH a lemonade- hes still hungover from the weekend (roll eyes here)- then when no-ones looking you swop. Although on reflection I guess this only works if your husband likes vodka/gin and tonic.

this is a good thread about it

have to say, whenever I'm not drinking, and get those comments, i just make this face Hmm and they shut up.

of course, it does help that i'm not pregnant, but it might work...

brettgirl2 · 09/09/2010 20:58

Just pretend to drink - grape juice, pretending there's vodka in your coke. Once they've had a few they won't notice what you're doing anyway.

Or you could just tell them you don't want to drink.

On antibiotics.

Antibiotics is really poor.

I went out for the evening once with a friend of DH's and his wife. She wasn't drinking, and I didn't think anything of it (I didn't know that she did drink, I hardly knew the woman) until she went into an (unprovoked) speel about being on antibiotics. It was almost as if she had expected us to ask Hmm I knew she was pg (and it was announced a few weeks later) :)

Ah...............

Make 1 small glass of wine last all night - I did this at a New Year party when I had just discovered I was pg - no one noticed, esp once they'd all had a few Grin

I order drinks and my DH drinks them... We swap glasses after a sip.

I also tell folks I've cut back and am only drinking one night a week then mention a function the next night or a meal with my MIL where "of course I was drinking" because she was there...

I also steer clear of the antibiotics type comments and focus on the un-TTC things I've been up to lately, like the triathlon coming up in a few weeks and such... (I haven't registered for it yet, too busy shagging) Grin.

NoMoreChocBiscuits · 10/09/2010 11:02

Well there goes my antibiotics excuse for next week, when I have the parents staying for 2 weeks. DH doesn't drink anyway so no swapping with him! Will just have to blag it now I guess.
