Hi girls,

I just wanted to wish you all the luck in the world and hope during the next few months you will all get your BFP's

Thank you so much for sharing all your info, advice and caring during the last 8 months on this site.

We have decided to stop trying for another baby and get on with life. It is still wonderful as I have my little girl who will be 3 in December.

Lots of love to you all xx

Hi Ladies

Just catching up on all the thread. DH and I were away for a wedding over the weekend and we booked an extra night at the posh hotel. Roll top bath in the bedroom. Was lovely. First time we've BD'd for a long time and not obsessed about whether we'd get pg or not! Grin

Rosieposey that's so disappointing that it was a chemical pg this month. However, I must say that your positive attitude really is an inspiration

Boba Really glad you had a good holiday, but sorry to hear the post-holiday blues have got you Sad. I normally have to start planning my next hol as soon as I get back from one.

Keziah That's so exciting that your cycle is just around the corner. Do you feel relieved now?

Starlet Was it the fertility doctor that told you that your PCT doesn't fund IVF for unexplained fertility? I'm just wondering as most PCTs do but the wait is long. For example my PCT funds IVF for explained fertility after one year, and three years for unexplained fertility. It might just be worth checking with your PCT directly if it was you GP who gave you the information as they don't always get it right - I know I am married to one. He didn't have a clue what funding was available in our area. NICE guidelines say that it should be funded (although not all do). However, the good news is that the PCTs are in the process of being abolished and starting next year GP consortia will be commissioning services under the direction of the NHS Commissioning Board (Strategic Health Authorities are also being abolished). The NHS Commissioning Board will be monitoring commissioning arrangments for quality and ensuring compliance with NICE, which is being given a lot more power. Therefore things may change with respect to NHS funding for you. I don't know if this is any help, but found this in the Guardian, which details the current fertility commissioning arrangements for each PCT.

Essence Your kitchen sound beautiful. I am Envy, especially of that range cooker. Grin

Lychees How did the HSG go?

I am on day 28 of my cycle today. AF is due this evening. All the signs that she's on her way are there and all my POAS results have been BFN's (and trust me I've done a lot over the past few days). Looks like this month wasn't our month. I expect I'll be resetting my stats back to day 1 tomorrow morning Sad

boba82 · 28/09/2010 11:13

Morning all

keziah no appointments have come through as yet but the consultant did write me a letter saying he would arrnge another HSG soon so FX. I really hope you get your BFP before Novemebr comes!! Ta for calender idea too.

Lyches how did HSG go?

Starlet sorry to hear you're down too, we can moan together as I just can't shake it at moment. What a lovely DH you have!

rosie sorry things didn't work out. x

Storm good luck on the 2ww, FX for a BFP

Izzy congrats on the peak, get SWI!

essence any luck on the SWI last night, bloddy men eh?! Your kitchen sounds lush BTW.

vnewmummy so sorry you're leaving us but of course I totally understand your decision. I think you're doing the right thing & who knows you may end up with an unexpected BFP sometime in the future. KnackeredCow · 28/09/2010 11:49

Boba Do you think it would be worth talking to your GP about how you are feeling? They might be able to help or refer you to a support service, or counselling - if that's something you would consider?

Would it also be worth asking what is available at the FC too? When DH and I went to see our GP recently she told us that our NHS FC has an attached psychologist - maybe yours has one too?

Lychees · 28/09/2010 11:50

Morning Ladies,

Rosie, sorry about the chemical pregnancy, hun. Fingers crossed for next month.

Knackered sorry about your BFN.

SES, DH's injury sounds bad. Hope he is better soon.

vnewmummy, as Boba says you never know what might happen when you stop trying Wink. Wishing you all the very best.

I had my HSG yesterday and it was okay ... I got the all clear and it wasn't too uncomfortable [I took nurofen beforehand and a big dose of antibiotics]. DH has his second SA tomorrow as the NHS didn't check morphology and then if all is well we carry on trying for a while before having a think about IUI with Clomid which was my consultant's next recommendation. When that'll happen will depend mostly on how I cope emotionally in the next few months, I guess and also if I get my BFP [ooh look at me, trying to be all optimistic Grin!].

Hey All,

I'm new to this site and to this thread as well, i've been trying to conceive for 9 months (ironically!) using the CB digi ov sticks with no luck as yet. So i've invested in a CBFM - my period is due on 8th Oct so am going to start using it then and if nothing by Dec am going to go to the docs anyway - can anyone tell me what sort of questions they'll ask at the doctors and what treatment / tests i might have to have? Would appreciate it lots Em x :)

StormBird · 28/09/2010 13:05

Hi All,

vnewmummy thank you for all of your support over the months. I'm so sorry it all had to end this way hun and I agree with Boba too - never say never! I wish you all the very best for the future. Please don;t be a stranger xxx

Lychees glad HSG went well hun.

Knackered I really hope AF doesn;t get you. FX.

ses He's a man - its probably not as bad as he's making it out to be LOL Grin - I know how hard it is though not to sound completly unreasonable when things like this happen just when you should be getting down to it. When DH was poorly I turned into a woman obsessed. I hope you can at least attempt to BD. FX.

Well Temp dipped this am, not sunstantially so I'm hoping that its just a blip, but the hope is fading and so is the PMA. I just hope that it rises slightly again in the morning or at least stays the same cos if it dips again @ 8DPO, I think this would probably indicate a BFN. Booooo!!

KnackeredCow · 28/09/2010 13:57

Stormbird I have my FX for you. Don't worry too much about a little dip in your temperature, lots of things can affect the reading so it could be a blip and not an actual drop.

Lyches That's really good news that you got the all clear following on from your HSG. Really pleased for you.

Welcome to EmmaC. Would you like us to add your stats?

I think everybody's experience of their first GP appointment is different although I have just had mine so this is what happened.

DH and I went together and told GP we'd been TTC for 1 year and no success. She asked about frequency of BD'ing and then ran through what would happen. She told us she would do referral letter to FC, and DH would be contacted separately about SA (semen analysis) once they received referral.

She checked I am taking folic acid and asked us both about smoking. She checked I was up to date on smear tests. This was followed by an external and internal pelvic examination on me and then I was given two swabs. High vaginal and a cervical. The cervical tests for chlamydia and gonorrhea and the high vaginal for bacerial vaginosis (opposite of thrush - it can make the vagina too acidic to be sperm friendly). They look for chlamydia because it is very common and a history can increase the chances of tubal infertility. Also if you've had chlamydia you would normally have a lap and dye and not an HSG later in the investigation process.

My results all came back negative although I do have to have the chlamydia repeated. I know that I haven't got it as I got myself screened when I first met DH. The reason I've been recalled is the GP used an older design of swab that is no longer recommended by microbiology - apparently it's slightly less accurate and the lab has recommended a repeat to be absolutely certain.

I was also booked in for blood tests. These are fasting blood glucose (to check you are not diabetic, which can reduce fertility), virology (to check I am immune to Rubella) and endocrine (hormone) function. This was done on day 21 of my 28 day cycle. They test for FSH / LH and progesterone (to establish whether you are ovulating and can maintain a conception) and TSH ( to test thyroid function - an underactive thyroid is linked to infertility too).

I got my blood test results on Friday and they are all normal. So I am breathing a big sigh of relief Smile

Once I've had the chlamydia swab repeated the referral letter will go off to FC and then we wait.......

The experience of some of the other ladies on here may well be different. Each FC seems to do things in a slightly different way, which I am sure some of the ladies further along in the process can telll you about.

Lychees · 28/09/2010 14:58

Welcome Emma, my first GP appointment was nowhere near as thorough as KnackeredCow's. I went by myself and was given forms to take myself up to hospital for blood tests and for DH to get his SA done. I got asked similar questions and also had to explain my cycle to her [if it was irregular, any pains, heavy bleeding etc] but was not given an examination or STI swabs.

Also, I didn't get referred to the FC as I already have DS so I think my GP was reluctant to do so. I went down the private route instead as I'm not entitled to NHS funded treatment anyway. And so far, I have had a trans-vaginal scan, AMH and HSG.

Storm, don't know about charting temps but keeping my fingers crossed all the same.

boba82 · 28/09/2010 15:37

Welcome Emma My first GP appt I went to alone. I was questioned about BDing, general health etc. The GP referred us straight away as he thought there was a 9 month wait list. I then recieved blood tests for hormone imbalance, thyroid funtion etc, smear test and chlamydia test and they did 2 SA on DH. My GP did all these first as he knew they would ask for them at FC.
Within 2 weeks we recieved a form to fill in & return from FC, it stated on return there was only a 12 week wait. Bang on 12 weeks we were seen at FC. I have follow up in Jan but so far have had transvag ultrasound which confirmed PCOS and a failed attempt at an HSG. I'm currently awaiting an appointment to repeat the HSG under anaesthetic.
So far I have found the NHS service excellent with much less waiting time than I'd feared. I'm in the Edinburgh area and am being seen at the ERI.
Hope that mammoth post helps a bit but FX you'll get a BFP before that!

PinkCustard · 28/09/2010 16:39

Hi ladies,

I've got a technical question which I hope one of you experts can help me with.

Since I started using the CMFM in June (after starting TTC*2 in January) I have had a 12 day luteal phase. I thought this was a bit on the short side but advice says anything longer than 10 days is ok.

However today I started bleeding on only 10dpo and so am a bit Shock and thinking back I do usually have a couple of days of spotting before full flow which would indicate the uterus lining coming away at 10dpo every month - surely this could mean any fertilised egg wouldn't have the chance to implant?!

I have been reading that B6 can be taken to help with a short LP - has anyone successfully tried this, or do I need a trip to the GP? (Last time I saw her she told me to come back once DH had been for a SA, but he's not obliged as yet and needs more nagging so feel a bit reluctant to go back really).

What do you think - is a LP of 10 days a cause for a GP appointment? Or do I try B6 for a month and see if it improves things?

TIA Pink x

Keziahhopes · 28/09/2010 18:39

KC - very useful article you linked there! I am in area with 1 cycle funded only Sad. I will be joining you on day 1 tomorrow also, as expected (well just late!)

Emma - I think KC got the gold star treatment at her apt!! I guess a lot depends on the Gp practice and yourself - how long ttc, age, medical history etc (eg if had cancer). For me I got sent for the same blood tests as most people here, saw a nurse for STI swabs and up to date smear (no internal or external exam), DH got separate forms for a SA at local hospital. Then saw Gp for results - as if due to say a thyroid problem they don't want to look foolish and have already referred. As some numbers were not great for me, blood tests were repeated and a 2nd SA for dh, as not great either while waited for FC referral, which helped things along at FC!

Useful to know that if needing fertility treatment, as KC's link shows there are limitations - general UK ones are BMI to be below 30 (mine was 31, not now!!) - which is handy to know if in referral process, as frustrating to wait and then find treatment blocked (but sure no one has that problem, just me!!)

Fedup - thank you, that is really kind.

Pink, I can't imagine the Gp will fast forward referral to FC if you already had tests and dh not been for a SA, and doubt a gp has the knowledge to answer the question you have - well mine wouldn't! Trying B vit no harm - do you take something like pregnacare already? Or take B6 on top of that?

Oh - my dh's morphology was really bad and on advice on FC he changed his vits from wellman ones to ones you can't buy apart from in Australia/New Zealand, or buy all bits separately - and his morphology has increased (but still probs with his antibodies!!) - called Menevit. Not saying they are a miracle cure, but he has had FOUR SA so lots of evidence for us!!!

BabyHoping · 28/09/2010 18:51

Hi pink, 10 days are on the limit for a lutheal phase, but if you are only spotting, your cycle does not end today. What I´m saying is that the first day of the cycle is when you have the real flow, so if you spot for two days before AF, those two days are included in the lutheal phase (this was explained to me by a doctor...). Now, spotting for some days before AF together with a kind of short phase might mean some deficiency of progesterone and a dificulty to maintain the endometrium. Here I have a friend who seemes to have this problem and was taking progesterone 200mg since she ovulated until two weeks after, than she would make a pregnancy test and if negative would stop progesterone. Hope this helps.

Keziahhopes · 28/09/2010 19:01

Pink - also when you have a scan at FC they check your endometrium which might reassure you!

KnackeredCow · 28/09/2010 19:24

Keziah sorry to hear you will be back to day 1 tomorrow. Sad AF has just arrived for me so I've just sent DH out to buy a bottle of red! Every cloud and all that....

Glad you found the link useful. My PCT only funds 1 cycle too but you have to wait three years if it's unexplained infertility. They fast track if there is a diagnosed cause. They are pretty leniant on other criteria though, certainly compared to other PCTs. Did you see at the bottom that North Staffs haven't funded any IVF for the last two years? It's shocking that we all pay NI and yet we're not all entitled to the same treatment. Angry

DH works 12 miles to the north in a different PCT. They fund 2 cycles but use the same FC! Told DH we might have to move. Grin

I think I may have just got lucky with my GP in terms of her thoroughness. Definitely seems the exception rather than the rule.

Keziahhopes · 28/09/2010 23:26

Hi KC - yes I did see North Staffs! I worked in that area for a while, scary!! I just wish everywhere would fund 2 cycles and even if out. What do you think will happen with changes to PCT's - any benefits maybe?
Yes, your gp was good, maybe being female helped? Though actually I got more support from a male gp than the female ones!! Do you think it helps having a dh as a gp? Great to see what they can do though. From Gp first tests to being told to keep trying even though you need IVF (what a good one that was, esp as we knew a couple who had unexplained issues after a year getting treatment!!) it took 9 months. Hence we switched hospitals and are now awating ICSI. As we have a problem not had to wait 2/3yrs, though we have reached that time.

KC - sadly, moving probably costs more than the extra cycle Grin unless you want to move! I am so with you about one NI system and unequal treatments. If only we had the energy to fight that! Hope your tests are helpful for you x

Thanks for your responses.

Didn't get my usual spotting this time, went straight to full AF yesterday, which is unusual. So maybe my normal 12 day LP isn't too bad?

Will try some B6 in addition to Pregnacare (as this only has 10mg in).

Discussed with DH last night and he's refusing to go for a SA!!!! Angry I explained that without it the GP won't continue any investigations and I don't want to fruitlessly carry on with TTC if there's something preventing it from happening. He thinks I'm being melodramatic (which I might be, but still!) and that I'll get pregnant naturally soon enough. Has anyone else's H's been so unwilling to have a SA done (and how did you persuade them..?)

Did i bugger up the stats? I really attempt them! Thanks pinkcustard :)

Starlet22 · 29/09/2010 09:55

Rosie, Pink, KC sorry AF got you all.

Pink re getting DH to do SA, I think most men get rather embarrassed about this. My DH did it but he was rather unwilling and found the whole thing rather embarrassing. I think in general men take male fertility issues quite badly (as if it's an affront to their manliness or something), which is silly really considering ALL the tests and issues that us women have to contend with. They should really count themselves as rather fortunate! Perhaps you should tell him that it's just procedure and that it would be good to rule out any issues there so they can concentrate on any female fertility issues. It is tricky though .... Good luck.

KC thanks so much for all the information set out above. The consultant didn't mention that if unexplained infertility it would be a three year wait ... TBH I don't think we would wait that long so would look to go private if that happened. From reading about your first GP appointment, it sounds very different to ours! Basically, our GP was only required to carry out certain tests for a referral to the FC i.e. they were prescribed by the FC rather than the GP doing the tests as a matter of course. So all the usual questions were asked and then blood tests for both of us re certain STIs; FSH/LH for me; and then day 21 (but earlier for me given my shorter cycle) for progesterone. DH was given forms for SA and told to make appointment with the hospital to drop off sample. No internal or external examination for me. No thyroid tests; no glucose tests etc. Have just had day 3 bloods repeated due to very high oestrogen levels but DH has not been requested to do second SA - perhaps his levels were sufficiently within their "normal" range. Anyway, am now waiting to get appointment for a hycosy. Your GP sounds very thorough and I agree with you/Keziah - why can't they all follow the same (high standard) protocol. It's a bit daft really especially as it is the NATIONAL health service. Ho hum.

Lychees - glad to hear that your HSG went well - must be a relief. Hope your DH's SA comes back normal as well.

Emma - welcome to the thread.

Storm - I shouldn't worry too much about a dip in temps. I know someone whose temps dropped around implantion .....

Essence - agree with the others - your kitchen sounds lovely !!

Vnewmummy - will be very sad to see you leave us. Pls do pop in from time to time and also keep us posted as to how you are keeping etc.

Hi Storm - like you, I am busy buying tickest for the Euromillions this week! Well, someone has to win it ....

Re CBFM - I have just had my third high (bit unusual for me - normally only get two) and the second line on the stick looks fainter than it did yesterday. Odd.
