How hard is it to get PG by accident at 36?

I've been worrying about this and am about to get some emergency contraception sorted out, but have just been thinking, surely fertility isn't what it used to be at this age anyway?

I have read somewhere that it is only a 10% chance of getting pregnant in any given cycle, so really if you are using withdrawal and already past ovulation the risk isn't going to be huge is it.

I'd appreciate opinions or experiences.

Btw my other two were conceived at 29 and 33 and it did happen easily.

Yep I thought so too at 34 - but have a lovely DD to show for it

From my own experience - v. v. easy. I was 36, still b.f. a toddler, and managed to get pg the ONLY time I had sex after she was born - on day 21 of a very regular 28 day cycle!

soremummy · 26/07/2010 11:45

I was 40 and now looking at my 3yr old running around..... so yep its very easy to get caught out

nowherewoman · 26/07/2010 11:45

Definitely get the morning after pill!!

Ohthisisnthappening · 26/07/2010 11:48

Ok thanks girls

Point taken

Quiss (good name!) I am still bfing a toddler as well. but surely including the factor of withdrawal it would be less likely?

Two accidental pg at 39 and 40 here!

SkiHorseWonAWean · 26/07/2010 11:52

Accidentally? Oh god, you didn't trip and land on an upturned penis did you?

EightiesChick · 26/07/2010 11:55

Have you read the Guardian column about the woman who accidentally got pregnant with her 5th at 48?! I'd take the precautions if I were you, if you really don't want the possibility. You know how it is; the one time you wouldn't think it possible, etc etc.

at tripping and landing on an upturned penis!

IWillNotNeverEatATomato · 26/07/2010 12:00

We weren't planning to get pregnant and had a condom accident, when I was 34

I took the morning after pill and it didn't work!!

Thankfully it was the best accident ever

So we failed with two forms of contraception.

The only form of contraception which is 100% effective is not having sex.

AxisofEvil · 26/07/2010 12:01

Well, it all rather depends. Withdrawl isn't exactly a reliable method given there are still sperm around before that. But if you say have a regular 28 day cycle and are on day 25 then yes the chances of getting pregnant are going to be pretty low. The bigger question is how much of an issue would it be if you got pregnant - if you'd be OK with it that is one thing, if it would be a total disaster for you then that is something else.

expatinscotland · 26/07/2010 12:03

One shot, quit literally, when I was 36.

Then, within a month after first period after missed miscarriage at 37.

Not hard at all.

Cadmum · 26/07/2010 12:05

IME, effortless. I fell effortlessly even at 38...

pushmepullyou · 26/07/2010 12:08

I got pregnant at 33 breastfeeding a toddler, without even properly having sex

kayah · 26/07/2010 12:11

I know someone who got pg at 52 with her 5-th child...

footdust · 26/07/2010 12:18

You can never be sure what tricks your body will play on you. I came off the pill at 42 for medical reasons, the doctor did advise me to use another method of contraception even though at my age my fertility was drastically reduced. But after years of just popping a pill and job done I got a bit careless and within 2 months was pregnant.

harassedinhants · 26/07/2010 12:24

Another one shot wonder here at 36!!

Ohthisisnthappening · 26/07/2010 13:50

Thanks girls. Skihorse I have heard that one about a million times already.

hiya

withadrwel isnt 100% but for the last 3 month apart from the last week, thats what me and my partner has been doing, as every form of contraception i have tried doesnt agree with me. and so far i havent got pregnant and ive only just turned 20.
i have a little boy aged 2 and i got pregnant after 1 time unprtected, so i know i can get pregnant pretty easily.
so withdrawel must be doing summat lol or i prob would have been preg by now.
but its upto you what you do if you feel more comfortable getting after morning pill then do that, it will put your mind at ease

BreastmilkDoesAFabLatte · 26/07/2010 14:21

pushmepullyou ...without properly having sex? Do elaborate, pleeeeeease.

But OP, yes, it could happen. Friend of mine had a happy little accident at 46

expatinscotland · 26/07/2010 15:33

My gran thought she was going through menopause as her periods went walkies and she was 47.

She gave birth to her 6th 2 days before her 48th birthday.

BalloonSlayer · 26/07/2010 15:42

Had accident at 42!

Having struggled to conceive first DC for years and three m/cs (Actually I didn't really struggle, it just felt like it, it was 9 months between m/cs at one point and that felt like forever)

Looking at DS2, I feel like I won the lottery without buying a ticket.

KristinaM · 26/07/2010 15:46

i got pg by accident at 42. while breast feeding an 8 month old. after only one period

I don't remember having sex either........

expatinscotland · 26/07/2010 15:47
