What’s odd about it? It’s a fair question!

You’re not interested in the topic. You’re response is petulant and tedious.
You are adding nothing to the conversation.

@Doable Thank you I’ll look at them with interest.

Defensive much? I am interested, which is why I asked! Why are you so rude?

Earth cools earth heats. It happens in cycles over millions of years. Humans have made a grand change of about one degree.

bakewellbride · 12/05/2024 22:35

The biggest contribution to environmental destruction and climate change by a million miles is animal agriculture. The carbon emissions are absolutely huge and really pale everything else into complete insignificance. 91% of Amazon rainforest destruction is for meat! If anyone really cared about this earth they would stop eating meat.

IbisDancer · 12/05/2024 22:37

You know what would make a big difference? Stopping wars.
”The best estimate we have is that militaries are responsible for 5.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions. If the global military were a country, this would place it fourth in terms of its emissions, between India and Russia.”

Report: Estimating the military’s global greenhouse gas emissions - CEOBS

Study estimating global and regional military GHG emissions finds that the military carbon footprint is approximately 5.5% of global emissions.

Yes, how dare I ask a relevant question about a topic you have raised on an open chat forum? It’s outrageous!

@bakewellbride Absolutely. I’m vegan because of this.

But that one degree is quite something. Would you like one percent of arsenic slipped into your water? A tiny change can make a big difference.

To add to the list: large equipment such as washing machines that are made to the minimum standard so they can be cheap. My mum was saying she bought both washing machine and dryer using a payment scheme because they were so unaffordable but both lasted circa twenty years! Also bam production of eg party items such as balloons etc. the fast fashion thing should be looked at too, although tbh we barely manage shopping for clothes in pennys, we couldn’t afford anything more sustainable.

bakewellbride · 12/05/2024 22:46

I am vegan too, it's the best thing we can do for our children as im sure you agree and know all too well. I found out how bad the earth was buggered up when my youngest was 6 weeks old and felt sad / hopeless but I overcame it by deciding do you know what, this is my one and only life. I am going to enjoy each day, the simple pleasures and not worry about climate change any longer as it is truly out of my hands. You are a vegan which is an amazing thing, enjoy your children and try not to worry about things beyond our control. My kids are 5 and 2 now and I can't control his the world will be for them in the future but we are all very happy and in good health now and that's all that truly matters.

bakewellbride · 12/05/2024 22:47

How not his

Foggyfield · 12/05/2024 22:53

Make money unimportant.

That's the only time you will get humans choosing the future over increasing profits.

So never.

You can be as eco as you like, means nothing with China and India acting as they are.

On the plus side we'll probably have nuked the planet long before any grandchildren can suffer.

Tbf, it’s our energy efficiency standards becoming stricter every few years that requires new machines to be made and bought, your mum’s machines would have been huge enrgy vampires.

stayathomer · 12/05/2024 23:04

yes, it’s a tough one though when you look at waste from the actual parts, I don’t honestly know which is worse? most people I know change their machines less than every seven eight or so years, same with old pc vs laptop

It is a tough one, because planned obsolescence does mean that many appliances have a shorter service life and production of each machine does have a carbon footprint.

I would love to see a study that calculated out the carbon footprint of production plus carbon footprint of running so we could get a rule of thumb like, say, upgrading to more energy efficient washer/dryer is best every 5yrs because keeping an older, less energy efficient one running for 10yrs is worse overall for the planet. Some sort of way to know when it’s best to scrap for recycling ?

Tbf, though normal temperature in humans varies by more than one degree Celsius. Not only due to sex, height, weight and age, but also by individual.

Some people run hot, and others cool.

Normal body temperature is personal, Stanford Medicine researchers find

A new, large-scale study of body temperatures has found that “normal” isn’t one size fits all — it varies by age, sex, weight, time of day and more.

That doesn't change the fact that a change of that magnitude is huge, biologically speaking.
