Climate Change

What are you NOT giving up for climate change?

As in, something you know would be beneficial and you actively refuse to do it.

I refuse to take 4 minute showers. My showers last 15-20 minutes, 30 if I've had a really bad day. A nice hot shower relaxes me and I can't abide the thought of feeling stressed in there trying to wash before the clock runs out.

To balance this out so that you don't all think I'm a terrible person, I was vegan for 10 years 🙈

Just wondering what others are clinging on to?

OP posts:

I'm going on a long haul flight to see my sister this year.
But I haven't been on a plane since 2008 and probably won't again.

Hopelessacademic · 04/08/2023 12:27

Children lol...
That's supposed to be the most effective thing you can do for climate change but I already have 2 and would like a third. Although I always wanted 4 I'm pretty sure we won't, not for environmental reasons though!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 04/08/2023 12:28

My car. I'm a 2-3 minute showerer by choice - I can't imagine taking a 15 minute shower! I wouldn't want to give up baths though, but I only have one every couple of weeks.

meatbaseddessert · 04/08/2023 12:34

All of this seems to suggest we should have some kind of 'climate impact loan' every few years. Spend up to your limit which is also within limits of reducing emissions globally.
Child free and vegan? Credits to spend on flights
4 kids and a SUV? You've spent your emissions credits for the year. You are in deficit and must change your lifestyle to suit.

Cattenberg · 04/08/2023 12:36

I still fly but rarely. I haven’t flown since 2016, but will later this year.

It’s hard to give this up completely when so many others refuse to cut back at all. I think flying should be rationed, personally.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 04/08/2023 12:41

I don't buy anything made in China. So don't add to damage from the
441,000 factories using forced & child labour.

And let's guess who will give us these quotas. The people who take private jets to climate conferences and elsewhere like the rest of us take buses.

Museya15 · 04/08/2023 12:44

nothing.

fullbloom87 · 04/08/2023 12:46

@MrsDanversGlidesAgain exactly

Qilin · 04/08/2023 12:50

Travelling - flying.

I will do my bit elsewhere where I can. We have electric cars, we only have one child, I haven't eaten meat for years (though so have fish on accession). We recycle. We use solid soap, shampoo bars, etc to reduce our plastic waste. That kind of thing.

But I'm not going to stop going on holidays abroad I'm afraid.

LittleMoReturns · 04/08/2023 12:54

Baths & showers.
Flying.

I’ve made a lot of changes.
Much less buying of stuff, much less waste, reuse things and go for secondhand if I can. No more fast fashion. Hardiy eat meat anymore. Don’t use my tumble drier often. And I’m about to sell my petrol car. DH and I will share his electric car and I mostly use public transport now anyway.

But a hot bubble bath or shower massively improve my mental health. And travel is a highlight of my life. I’d struggle to give these up.

Aitchoo · 04/08/2023 12:54

Nothing. When the hypocrisy stops and private jets are banned, then we can talk.

You understand that what’s happening is real right? The science isn’t made up. Does it make everyone feel better to pretend it’s not real and make little deals about what they’ll hang on to? If your kids are babies now it’s very unlikely there’ll even be coffee available to consumers when they’re adults. They’ll be lucky to have access to a functioning food system. My brother is a climate scientist and he is an absolute wreck knowing what’s going to hit us. It’s terrifying to see him like that, but he’s just going by the evidence. I just can’t get my head around whether people on here really understand what’s going to happen in our lifetimes, or if it’s too scary to really accept it and it feels comforting to have threads like this instead.

Yet you're not willing to give up using electronic devices, run through electrify and no doubt relatively up to date electronics to access the internet.
Everyone contributes to the changes in the climate.

Can someone explain to me why some people believe having children has the biggest impact on CO2 emissions?

I know the answer and they don't, but I am curious as to people believe they do.

Because they're brainwashed by the elites who think we're all 'useless eaters'

Daftasabroom · 04/08/2023 13:39

They being children.

@fullbloom87 "useless eaters"???

All people not just children.

It has the biggest impact because whatever the average CO2 emission per person is, you're bringing in x more people, meaning x more emissions.

I'm childfree. My "family" of just me and my partner will on average consume twice less meat, plastic, flights, etc.

We have a smaller house/flat, if you have children you are likely to have more space, which is more energy consumption too. And then one day your kids move out and now that's two households.

It's not brainwashing, it's pretty simple to figure out surely.

@Miajk
How many children have the elites and scientists who told you this have?
What do you think will happen to the world if everybody decided not to have children?

Spendonsend · 04/08/2023 15:46

I have t give up anything. I"m not a good person.

I dont fly because I cant afford to.

I chose jobs close to home/homeworking because I like not gaving a long commute so accidently I dont drive much.

I cant afford to heat my house above 17 degrees.

We run our appliances at night because there is less demand on the grid so they are more likely to be green energy.

We reduced meat for finances, but arent non dairy or veggie.

I do buy bar soap, shampoo and eco washinv poweder bjt thjs isnt giving something up.

Im not taking responsibility for my chikdren and grandchildren s long term carbon emissions cos I believe the world will decarbonise within my life time. I already use loads less carbon than my parents generation.

If DP and I emit x and 2DCs emit x/2 over their life then emissions are reducing. Not increasing.

If average CO2 emission per person are decreasing fast enough then a static or even growing population can still live sustainably.

Pretty simple to figure out.

A lot of the anti children arguments are based on false premises, and an absolutely awful paper from 2016.

The world would be fine, it's not like the human race makes a great addition to our planet.

Also let's not pretend people are out there having kids for altruistic reasons.

If less people had children, immigration would solve a lot of issues in levelling out the population.

You may not like the fact that having children is horrible for the environment but it's true. I eat meat, and it's not eco friendly, but I do - what I won't do is start asking "what would happen if everyone stopped eating meat" or saying "well xyz eats meat"

Own your choices

Everyone contributes to the changes in the climate.

Yes everyone contributes, youre spot on. Such a good daily mail style response, well done. Maybe re-read the comment you were replying to though? It was about how disturbing and confusing these threads are where people make silly brags about how much they love their car, and joke about a very real and terrifying future we face. Seemingly in complete denial that this is actually happening. And how bewildering it is to encounter that extreme cognitive dissonance on such a mass scale. Did you have something to say about that specific point? How do you feel personally - do you hide your fears deep inside because it’s too overwhelming to confront?

I don't think you understand the math here.

2x + x/2 is still more than 2x.
