What's your experience of being able to buy very popular toys for Christmas when they are sold out everywhere?

I'm not sure what to do.... I want to get DS a toy that is sold out absolutely everywhere (just realised it's so popular since I went to buy it). There are some on Ebay but I'd end up paying £16 more than RRP and it's already £50.

I am checking websites every day but in your experience, what's the likelihood of being able to get a 'must have' toy this late before Xmas?

Should I wait to see if they get back in stock or just get the ebay one?

ask the shops if they have a waiting list, or what day they get their deliveries and plan to be there.

How old is your ds? Could you wait until after Christmas?

Is the £16 extra on ebay including any postage costs?

I bought my ds a present a few weeks ago thinking they'd all be out of stock closer to the time but part of me is regretting it because we'll end up losing three months of the guarantee by the time he starts using it. (Sorry, not really relevant!)

ilikeyoursleeves · 17/11/2008 20:04

I've called a few shops (ELC and Mothercare) and they said they are getting daily deliveries of stock now but I live about a 30mile round trip from the town so can't really 'pop down'. Not sure if they would be able to reserve one either, can shops do that?

He will be 14months by Xmas so I know he won't be any of the wiser but I want to have it for Xmas as the magic of the day is partly opening the pressies and seeing DS's face!

and yes the £16 extra includes £9 P&P and they have just added an extra £7 on top of the toy price this evening!

Have you phoned John Lewis to see if they are expecting any more in - as they do free delivery which would be handy. I was on the look out for a particular lego box which they had as sold out the other week now they have more in stock, so might be worth a try giving somewhere like that a ring?!

sparklestickchick · 17/11/2008 20:12

I once went into a v posh toy shop heavily pregnant and in tears begging to buy their display cos it was sold out everywhere....they made me a cup of tea boxed it ll up and sold it me cheaper lol

Lilyloo · 17/11/2008 20:12

Is it in your local store here

mogs0 · 17/11/2008 20:14

It's in my local one if you wanted me to get it and send to you?

Lilyloo · 17/11/2008 20:15

Showing as in stock at a few stores on that link.

ilikeyoursleeves · 17/11/2008 20:16

Argh I'm in Scotland so I don't really have a 'local store' there but thanks anyway!

I just checked out the ebay sellers feedback and they have had 47 negative feedbacks in the past month! OK they also had >3000 positive feedbacks but it's put me off buying from there.

Norksinmywaistband · 17/11/2008 20:17

Lilyloo · 17/11/2008 20:17

take mogs up on her offer then and pay postage that way better than getting ripped off on ebay!

TequilaMockinBird · 17/11/2008 20:17

Oops sorry X-posts

ilikeyoursleeves · 17/11/2008 20:18

Oh Mogs! That's quite an offer thanks! Not sure how much postage would be though, would prob be astronomical as it looks really heavy...

Any idea what it would cost?

ilikeyoursleeves · 17/11/2008 20:20

I can't see it on Amazon

Lilyloo · 17/11/2008 20:20

what they charging on ebay ?

TequilaMockinBird · 17/11/2008 20:21

Just checked Amazon, Argos, Boots, Woolworths and a couple of others - its showing as out of stock everywhere

Goober · 17/11/2008 20:23

Is it in stock here?

ilikeyoursleeves · 17/11/2008 20:24

Thanks Tequila, I've tried all those places and phoned loads too. They just say to call in each day to check but I'm not sure if I could then secure one and collect later.

On ebay it's £57 plus £8.50 P&P. But looks like a dodgy seller.
