God, we always get huge one, but it is all for me really

In fact, in our old house DH used to have to cut bits of the back because I always bought one so wide at the bottom (to get the height) that you had to squeeze past it to get down the room...

IllegallyBrunette · 28/10/2008 18:04

Erm, I think ours is 6ft.

I'd like a new one actually, preferably a pre lit one. I hate putting the lights on mine.

Bride1 · 28/10/2008 18:04

Erm, I won't be buying it for at least another five weeks but it will probably not be huge: four foot?

filz · 28/10/2008 18:05

usually the biggest fucker we can find

Flightattendant4 · 28/10/2008 18:06

Remember it will prob be standing on something. So the ones that say 4ft are gpoing to be about 7ft tall when standing on a bucket/table etc.

they are also as wide as they are tall, sometimes - see how wide a circle you can draw on the floor and go from there.

Am having a mighty tall one this year as have got 12 ft ceilings

I am losing so much on the heat that goes right up there that I may as well make the most of them with regards to tree...

mrsmaidamess · 28/10/2008 18:08

I'm going smaller and higher up this year. So probably about 4 foot raised on a small table of some description.

Podrick · 28/10/2008 18:08

work out where you want it to go and judge the size from there!

Tigerschick · 28/10/2008 18:10

We always stand ours on a small table that we have for the purpose.
So we get a 4ft one but it looks nearer 6ft. It's cheaper, it's safer being a bit away from DD and we use the table to put smaller presents on so they don't get lost under the big ones.

BTW - I won't be buying one until the first weekend of December and then it will stand in teh garage for a fortnight!

PictureThis · 28/10/2008 18:10

We usually get a 7ft one

spookycharlotte121 · 28/10/2008 18:13

so in a normal size house how tall should it be. I have a place in mind for it to go but it wouldnt be able to be massivly wide.

OP posts:
muggglewump · 28/10/2008 18:16

6ft.
My Dad bought me it my first Christmas in this house. It's plenty big enough for us.
I have toyed with getting a real one but every year I can't be arsed and the old faithful fake comes out again.
Oh and it's missing a branch because I had to cut it off to unclog the toilet a few years back

Swedes · 28/10/2008 18:17

We normally have one that almost touches the ceiling (about 10 feet) but last year we had a six footer and put it on a small table as DD was at the investigative stage. It looked shit.

bozza · 28/10/2008 18:17

real or artificial. Real ones tend to be wider than artificial.

AmIWhatAndWhy · 28/10/2008 18:18

A 4 or five foot potted one, we always offer it on freecycle after too as we don't have a garden.

Swedes · 28/10/2008 18:18

ANd btw, we have a real one and only get it about 3 or 4 days before Christmas.

TskullsScreaming · 28/10/2008 18:23

Last year for the firs time we had a 4ft tree in the room. I loved it. It looked so neat and pretty.

We've always had a huge bushy 6ft one and it takes over the room; we're peering round branches at each other and sending out search parties.

Less is more I've decided although I like big trees if you have the space.

chipo · 28/10/2008 18:33

Ours is 6ft and pre lit, looks great cos the lights are evenly spread out. Can't wait for DD to help me decorate it.

JustKeepScreamingInFear · 28/10/2008 18:35

Mugglewump - you need to come on the plate down the back of the loo thread....

JustKeepScreamingInFear · 28/10/2008 18:36

Not sure how tall our fake one is, about 5 or 6ft.
want a pre-lit one but promised dh i wouldn't buy ANY more decorations this year.....is it a decoration do you think?

spookycharlotte121 · 28/10/2008 18:53

I have just bought this tree and these decorations and also these I am feeling very excited!!!!

We have a 6ft one in the living room, a 6ft one in the playroom and dd has a 4ft pink prelight feather one in her room. The playroom one ois decorated with traditional style wooden toy type decorations and the start of the collection of homemade stuff by the children, dd's is just for pretty lights at bedtime and the living room one changes from year to year. Last year we did very traditional burgundy and gold, with antique slippers and musical instuments, sleighs etc. This year it is going to be peacock inspired in emeralds, greens etc.

I am ott at this time of year

TheFallenMadonna · 28/10/2008 19:08

Oooh COV, I am eagerly awaiting the start of your Christmas threads. I live vicariously through them you know

Dropdeadfred · 28/10/2008 19:10

we buy a 9 foot tree..they are so wide as well it looks like Narnia could be behind it

spookycharlotte121 · 28/10/2008 19:13

I love christmas!!!!!

I am prob strange but I never quite get it when people go and buy new decorations every year. I always thought the point of it was to have the same ones for years and years so everyone has a favourite to hang up.

I don't know - might be us that's odd!

I do buy a couple new some years in the sales though, if they are really pretty. And chuck the ones that get broken...
